Among the longest trainee periods reported by entertainment media are G.Soul’s 15 years, G-Dragon’s roughly 11 years, and TWICE’s Jihyo’s about 10 years. These are notable cases, not a definitive all-time ranking: the published lists are snapshots, and even the definition of an official debut can change how a training period is counted.
How long did the longest-reported trainee periods last?
The figures below come from two entertainment-news compilations published in 2015 and 2019, plus a 2020 SBS report quoting Jihyo directly. They should be read as reported durations, not precise measurements from a comprehensive industry registry.
| Artist | Reported trainee period | Context and source |
|---|---|---|
| G.Soul | 15 years | Soompi’s 2015 compilation identifies him as its longest case. He is a solo artist, included here because the topic uses “idols” broadly for K-pop performers, not only members of idol groups. Soompi, 2015. |
| G-Dragon | About 11 years | Both Soompi in 2015 and SBS in 2019 report a combined period of roughly five years at SM Entertainment and six at YG Entertainment. Soompi, 2015; SBS, 2019. |
| Jihyo | About 10 years | SBS reported that she joined JYP Entertainment in 2005 and debuted with TWICE in October 2015. In a 2020 report, SBS quoted Jihyo saying she was a JYP trainee for “about 10 years” before debut. SBS, 2019; SBS, 2020. |
| Xiyeon | 9 years | SBS’s 2019 list gives this duration before her PRISTIN debut. SBS, 2019. |
| Miyeon | 8 years | SBS says she trained for five years at YG Entertainment and then three more at Cube Entertainment before debuting in 2018. SBS, 2019. |
| Seulgi | 7 years | SBS’s 2019 list reports seven years before her Red Velvet debut. SBS, 2019. |
| Jessica | 7 years | SBS’s 2019 list reports seven years before her Girls’ Generation debut. SBS, 2019. |
Why G.Soul and G-Dragon top many lists
G.Soul: 15 years in Soompi’s 2015 compilation
Soompi’s 2015 retrospective names soloist G.Soul as the longest-trained performer in its compilation, at 15 years. That makes him the longest case among the sources cited here. It does not establish that he holds an uncontested record across every K-pop trainee or every definition of “idol.”
G-Dragon: training across two agencies
G-Dragon’s commonly cited total combines reported training at SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment: about five years at SM followed by six at YG. Soompi described the total as approximately 11 years in 2015, and SBS listed 11 years in 2019. Because the period spans two companies, it is better understood as a reported combined path than as time at a single agency.

Jihyo’s decade-long period has a first-person account
Jihyo’s case is unusually clear in its broad timeline: SBS reported that she entered JYP Entertainment in 2005 and debuted with TWICE in October 2015. In 2020, SBS reported her own description: “I was a trainee at JYP Entertainment for about 10 years before making debut.” The wording is approximate, so the figure should remain “about 10 years,” rather than be treated as an exact count of days or uninterrupted training.
Why trainee-duration rankings are hard to settle
- Debut can mean different things. Soompi explicitly noted that totals vary because people disagree about what counts as an official debut. A performer’s earlier activity or a group’s milestones may affect where a count begins or ends.
- Lists cover different people and periods. Soompi’s list dates to 2015; SBS’s list dates to 2019. Neither presents itself as an exhaustive record of all K-pop performers.
- Reported totals are not always directly comparable. Some accounts combine training at more than one company, and published figures may be rounded or approximate. The sources do not establish how to adjust for agency changes, breaks, or other pre-debut activity.
- “Idol” can be used narrowly or broadly. A list limited to group members would exclude soloist G.Soul, while a broader use includes him. The title’s cases include solo and group performers where the sources identify them.
What the reported cases show
In these dated reports, G.Soul has the longest stated period at 15 years, followed by G-Dragon at about 11 and Jihyo at about 10. Xiyeon, Miyeon, Seulgi, and Jessica are further examples named by SBS in 2019. These figures are useful for comparing widely reported long trainee paths, but the available lists do not settle a current all-time record.
