The correct answer was Whitney Houston. The reported twist came afterward: Jimmy Kimmel said he knew the answer, but the pair had saved their Ask the Host lifeline for later.
The headline is ambiguous, however. A 2026 report described a separate Larry David cereal-question stumble, while another 2025 episode featured Matt Damon and Ken Jennings using Kimmel’s help on their way to a million-dollar win. These are different moments, not parts of the Carey–Tyler game.
What happened in Drew Carey and Aisha Tyler’s game?
Carey and Tyler reached a $32,000 question about Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits. It asked which singer had more No. 1 hits than the other three choices combined. The options were Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Tina Turner and Britney Spears.
The pair leaned toward Spears and asked the studio audience for help. The audience also favored Spears, but that was the wrong answer: the reported correct answer was Whitney Houston. Carey and Tyler left with $32,000 for their selected charities. TV Insider’s July 23, 2025 recap and interview details the question, their choice and what happened after the miss: TV Insider’s recap and Aisha Tyler interview.

What was the “jaw-dropping twist”?
It was not a surprise contestant or a change to the game. After the miss, Kimmel told the pair he knew the answer and suggested they should have asked him. Ask the Host was still available, but Carey and Tyler had chosen to save it for later. The reveal made the missed opportunity especially striking: they had turned to the audience, which backed their wrong answer, while a lifeline that could have reached Kimmel remained unused.
Tyler later described their hindsight to TV Insider: “Now, in retrospect, honestly. We probably should have used Jimmy, because it was clear that he knew something about the question that we didn’t, and we should have leaned into that, but we wanted to save him for later in the game.”

Why the headline may refer to a different episode
The title does not identify an air date or contestant, and reports describe other Kimmel-hosted moments that could be confused with the Carey–Tyler miss. The key distinctions are the contestants, the question and what Kimmel did.
| Episode or report | Question or game moment | Answer or outcome | Kimmel-related reveal |

| Drew Carey and Aisha Tyler, July 2025 | A $32,000 question about singers’ Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits | They chose Britney Spears; the reported correct answer was Whitney Houston. | Larry David and Cazzie David, 2026 season-premiere preview | A cereal question about “marbits,” or marshmallow bits | Cazzie answered Lucky Charms while Larry was perplexed. | Kimmel joked about Larry’s unfamiliarity. | Matt Damon and Ken Jennings, July 2025 | They used Ask the Host on a $500,000 question about Bill Nye, then faced the final question | Jennings answered the final $1 million question; Boston.com reported they won for Water.org. | Kimmel helped on the Bill Nye question; this was a successful use of the lifeline, not the Carey–Tyler miss. Where the 2025 episode fits in the show
ABC’s 2025 season-four publicity sheet said the season premiered July 23, with Kimmel hosting and celebrity pairs playing for charities of their choice. The stated top prize was $1 million; that was the show’s prize, not Carey and Tyler’s result. ABC / Disney Television Publicity’s season-four lead sheet.
