Before buying, check the amp’s manual or the manufacturer’s compatibility list, then match the switch’s functions, button count, connector and switching behavior. There is no universal footswitch recommendation: a switch can provide hands-free channel or effect control, but it does not improve an amp’s tone by itself.
What can a guitar amp footswitch control?
Depending on the amplifier and controller, a footswitch can change channels or operate reverb, an effects loop, boost, tremolo or other assignable functions. A simple switch may control one function; a dedicated controller may expose several. The amp determines what can be switched, so the number of buttons alone does not tell you what a footswitch will do.
For example, Fender’s 2-Button Footswitch: Channel-Reverb is listed for channel and reverb switching on specified amps. The Orange FS-1 is described for channel, reverb or other assignable functions on compatible amplifiers. BOSS says its GA-FC can switch channels and access supported functions such as effects loops, reverb and boost. Those examples are not interchangeable: each depends on amp compatibility.
How to check whether a footswitch fits your amp
- Identify the exact amplifier. Note the full model name and generation, and check the rear-panel footswitch jack and labels. Similar names do not guarantee identical switching requirements.
- Consult the manufacturer’s manual or compatibility list. Look up the amp model rather than relying on a brand name or a seller’s broad description. Fender lists supported amps for its replacement switches; Marshall’s compatibility listing maps amp models to PEDL switch models and functions.
- Match the functions you need. Confirm which controls the switch actually operates on your amp—such as channel, reverb or boost—and whether it can access every function you want hands-free.
- Match button count and connector. Check how many switches the amp requires and the connector type. A 1/4-inch plug is not proof of universal compatibility; some vintage amplifiers require RCA connectors.
- Check switching behavior and practical details. Confirm whether the amp specifies latching or momentary operation, and check power needs, status indicators, cable requirements and whether a cable is included. Do not assume these details from another product in the same brand’s range.

| Switch | Documented features | Compatibility notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fender 2-Button Footswitch: Channel-Reverb | Two buttons; 1/4-inch plug; 12-foot cable; channel and reverb switching. | Fender lists models including Deluxe 112, Stage 112, Blues Deluxe, Blues DeVille, Roc Pro 700, Performer 650, Champ 25 and The Twin. |
| Fender 1-Button Footswitch: Channel Switching | One button; 1/4-inch plug; 12-foot cable; channel switching. | Fender lists models including Champion 300, Champ 110, Champion 30, Blues Deluxe, M-80, Dual Showman, Princeton 65, Frontman 25R, FM 65R, X-25R, FM 210R and several Rumble models. |
| Fender Vintage-Style 2-Button RCA Footswitch | Two buttons; RCA connectors. | Listed for early Twin Reverb, Deluxe Reverb, Pro Reverb, Super Reverb and Bandmaster Reverb amplifiers that require RCA jacks. This is a model-specific vintage option, not a generic replacement. |
| Marshall PEDL footswitches | Marshall’s listing maps switch part numbers to supported amp models and controlled functions. | Check the exact amp entry. A PEDL model number should not be assumed to suit every Marshall amplifier. |
| Orange FS-1 | Passive, latching switch for a standard quarter-inch jack. | Orange describes it for channel, reverb or other assignable functions on compatible amps. Verify the function required by your model. |
| Orange FS-2 | Passive dual latching switch with status LEDs; standard mono-jack cables are not included. | For compatible amp functions; confirm that your amplifier supports the intended connection and controls. |
| BOSS GA-FC | Dedicated multi-function controller for channel switching and supported amp functions, including effects loop, reverb and boost settings. | Compatibility is model-dependent, including among Katana generations. Check the specific amplifier’s documentation. |
Why connector and switching details matter
Two switches can look similar while using different connectors or operating in different ways. Fender’s cited contemporary single- and dual-button examples use 1/4-inch plugs, whereas its vintage-style model uses RCA connectors for specified amplifiers. These examples show why you should follow the amp maker’s compatibility guidance rather than treating connector shape—or a shared brand—as enough evidence.
Likewise, “passive” and “latching” are product-specific specifications, not safe assumptions about every footswitch. Orange describes the FS-1 and FS-2 as passive and latching. For other switches, check the manufacturer’s instructions for the required switching behavior, any power supply, LED operation and cable arrangement.

Which type should you choose?
- Choose a simple one-button switch if your amp supports it and you only need the listed function, such as channel switching.
- Choose a two-button switch when the compatibility information confirms that both controls—such as channel and reverb—work with your amp.
- Choose a vintage connector model only when your exact amplifier is listed and requires that connector, such as RCA.
- Choose a dedicated multi-function controller when your amp explicitly supports it and you want hands-free access to several amp functions.
When no manufacturer listing clearly confirms a candidate, check the manual or ask the amp maker or an authorized service provider before connecting it. A forum recommendation for a similarly named amp is a useful lead to verify, not proof of compatibility.

A compatible footswitch can make supported amp controls available without reaching for the front or rear panel. It does not create channel, reverb, boost or other features that the amplifier does not provide, and it does not improve tone by itself. Its practical value is access to the functions the amp already supports.
