That historical sale does not establish what the Kroll family is worth today. Nick’s own public story is a comedy career built around projects including Big Mouth, a series rooted in the awkwardness of his adolescence.
Who is Nick Kroll’s father?
Nick Kroll is the son of Jules Kroll, founder of Kroll, Inc. Jules built the company around corporate investigations and related services. TIME’s 2021 profile describes the firm’s development and reports that an insurance company paid $1.9 billion for control of it in 2004. TIME’s account of Jules Kroll and the company reports that Jules received $117 million from the transaction.
Those are two different figures: the sale price for control of a company and the reported proceeds received by its founder. Neither is a present-day estimate of Jules Kroll’s personal wealth, Nick Kroll’s wealth, or the family’s combined net worth. The same TIME profile identified Duff & Phelps as the owner at the time and said it marketed services under the Kroll name; ownership and branding can change, so that description should be read in its 2021 context.
How did the Kroll family make its money?
The documented business legacy is Jules Kroll’s corporate investigations firm and its 2004 sale. The available figures give a historical transaction value and reported founder proceeds, not a complete account of family assets, liabilities, later income, or current holdings. They therefore cannot support a claim that the family is worth billions today.

What does Nick Kroll do on Big Mouth?
Kroll co-created, writes, produces, and performs voices on Netflix’s animated comedy Big Mouth. His official biography describes the series as based on his childhood and says he performs more than 30 voices. The Television Academy names Kroll, childhood friend Andrew Goldberg, Jennifer Flackett, and Mark Levin as the show’s creators. Its 2025 profile reported that the series was ending with its eighth season.
The premise draws on the confusion and discomfort of adolescence. Kroll told TIME in 2017, “As open as society is, there are still certain things that we feel like are too awkward to talk about.” TIME also reported that he and Goldberg had known each other since first grade and drew some story material from their own lives, friends, and people they knew.

Did family influence Nick Kroll’s comedy career?
Kroll has described comedy as a path without a family model. In a 2025 Television Academy interview, he said, “There was no model for it in my family,” in a passage about the expectation that people around him would pursue medicine, law, or finance. The profile describes his discovery of improv while he was at Georgetown.
That account helps explain the contrast between Jules Kroll’s business legacy and Nick’s entertainment career. It does not establish that family resources had no influence on Nick’s opportunities, nor does it show that his comedy career followed the same path as his father’s business. The documented point is narrower: Kroll has said his family did not provide a template for pursuing comedy.
What the “billion-dollar family tree” claim can—and cannot—mean
The phrase fits only as a reference to a historical company sale, not as a verified current family valuation. The available reporting supports these distinctions:
- Company transaction: TIME reported a $1.9 billion payment for control of Kroll, Inc. in 2004.
- Founder proceeds: TIME reported Jules Kroll received $117 million from that sale.
- Current net worth: No reliable figure for Nick Kroll’s or the Kroll family’s present net worth is established by these sources.
Keeping those measures separate makes the family story clearer: Jules Kroll’s business success is documented, while Nick Kroll’s work on Big Mouth represents a distinct creative career. Neither fact supplies a current balance sheet for the family.
