Biggie heard country music at home because his mother, Voletta Wallace, loved the genre; on family visits to Jamaica, he listened to reggae played by his musician uncles. Wallace’s memories establish that these styles were part of his childhood soundscape. They suggest a context for his later storytelling, but do not prove that either genre directly caused his musical style.

Country music was part of the music at home

Wallace recalled that she was a country fan, drawn to the genre’s stories. “Ever since I was a little girl I liked stories,” she said, describing that attraction. She also named Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings among the artists she loved.

She kept a country station playing while Christopher was growing up, joking that he had little choice but to hear it. That is a family memory of music in the home, not evidence that he consciously studied country or set out to borrow from it.

His uncles played reggae during visits to Jamaica

Wallace also remembered Christopher spending time with her brothers Dave and Lou on visits to her native Jamaica. “When Christopher was little, he was fascinated by my brothers Dave and Lou because they are musicians,” she said. She recalled Lou trying to teach him guitar while Dave sang and the brothers played reggae. Christopher enjoyed the visits and looked forward to them.

Roots, Rock, Reggae: Live at the Hammersmith Odeon[180g 2 LP]
  • Roots, Rock, Reggae: Live at the Hammersmith Oden is a stunning, previously unreleased live album from Bob Marley, recorded over several nights during the Wailers' residency at London's prestigious Hammersmith Odeon in June 1976, during their Rastaman Vibration tour

Her account describes family music-making and a child’s interest in it. It does not identify a reggae song, technique or recording that later shaped a particular Biggie track.

What these memories can—and cannot—tell us about Biggie’s storytelling

The two settings offer different kinds of context: country was a regular presence in the household, and reggae accompanied shared music-making with relatives in Jamaica. In a 2023 retrospective, author Tinsley connected Biggie’s reputation as a storyteller with country music’s storytelling tradition. That is a later interpretation, not proof of a direct line from the music Wallace played at home to Biggie’s writing.

The careful conclusion is that both genres were among the sounds around Christopher as a child, according to his mother. The available accounts support exposure and interest; they do not establish either genre as the sole source—or a demonstrable cause—of his sound.
