Before The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the five comics highlighted in Marvel’s April 4, 2024 “4-4 Day” promotion offered three ways into the team: its original origin, the classic Galactus and Silver Surfer story, and a modern retelling of the origin. The list was reported by Gizmodo; it is a useful reading route, not confirmation that the film adapts these specific issues.
What were the five recommended Fantastic Four comics?
Gizmodo reported that Marvel’s promotion pointed readers to five comics on Marvel Unlimited. The recommendations form a short sequence of classic issues plus one later reinterpretation:
- Fantastic Four #1 — the team’s debut and origin, including its first encounter with Mole Man.
- Fantastic Four #48 — Uatu warns of Galactus, while the Silver Surfer’s arrival signals the coming threat.
- Fantastic Four #49 — Galactus arrives. The Silver Surfer meets Alicia Masters and begins to question his role as herald.
- Fantastic Four #50 — the Galactus story concludes with the Fantastic Four using the Ultimate Nullifier and Galactus agreeing to leave Earth.
- Fantastic Four: Life Story #1 — the first issue of a 2021 series that places the team’s origin in the 1960s and ties it to the Cold War and Space Race.
That is five recommendations, as listed by Gizmodo in 2024. The first four are original issues; the final pick is a modern alternate telling rather than another installment of the same original story.
Where should you start?
For the team’s beginning: Fantastic Four #1
Start here if you want the team’s debut and origin before moving on to its later cosmic adventures. It is a single issue and the most direct choice for a reader new to the characters.
#1 Best Overall
For Galactus and the Silver Surfer: Fantastic Four #48–50
Read these three issues in order for the complete Galactus storyline represented in the list: warning and arrival in #48, the confrontation and the Surfer’s doubts in #49, then the resolution in #50. This is the longest continuous section of the recommendations.
For a modern origin with historical context: Fantastic Four: Life Story #1
Choose this if you are interested in a 2021 reinterpretation that situates the origin amid the 1960s Cold War and Space Race. It offers a different era and framing from the original comics, rather than replacing them as the source of the classic Galactus arc.
How did the comics connect to the movie?
Gizmodo connected the Galactus and Silver Surfer issues, along with the retro-1960s feel of Life Story, to the then-upcoming film. That was the article’s interpretation of the promotion; the recommendations do not establish that the movie directly adapts any of these comics.
The film is no longer upcoming: The Fantastic Four: First Steps was released in 2025. The list is best understood as a snapshot of Marvel’s pre-release promotion in 2024, not a current official reading order or a guide to the film’s plot.

What was the “4-4 Day” promotion?
According to Gizmodo’s April 4, 2024 report, Marvel marked “4-4 Day” with a Johnny Storm poster and a link that appeared to lead to a themed 404 page. The page reportedly featured HERBIE concept art and a faux QR code; following it led to a Future Foundation invitation and the reading list. The original promotional page was not independently verified for this account, so these details are attributed to Gizmodo.

Gizmodo said the five comics were free to read on Marvel Unlimited when its article was published on April 4, 2024. That does not establish their present catalog availability or current subscription terms. Check Marvel Unlimited’s current catalog before relying on digital access.

The report names issue titles but does not identify print collections that contain them, particular editions, or current stock. If you want physical copies, verify that a listing includes the issue you want—especially all three issues, #48–50, if you are seeking the complete Galactus arc.
