Beginning in 2020, several titles packed major adventures into that interval; Marvel’s 2025 flagship series instead begins after Return of the Jedi.
Why the comics stayed in that crowded year
In a June 20, 2024 article, James Whitbrook of Gizmodo’s io9 described Marvel’s output in the period as spanning “Nearly 5 years.” That refers to the real-world run of comics storytelling largely set in the immediate aftermath of The Empire Strikes Back, not five years of in-universe time. The stories themselves were fitted into the roughly one-year interval before Return of the Jedi.
Starting in early 2020, Marvel’s main Star Wars and Darth Vader titles, alongside Doctor Aphra and Bounty Hunters, all explored that narrow window. The result was a dense accumulation of plots and character developments. “Most unhinged year in canon” is Whitbrook’s colorful characterization, not an official Star Wars timeline label. He also stressed that many stories were good; his point was how wild the pileup could feel when so much happened in one short stretch.
What made the era feel so packed
Whitbrook pointed to stories that ranged from character drama to extravagant threats. Among his examples were Qi’ra’s attempt to kill Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine by trapping them in a box and sending it into a sun, an ancient technology unleashing a droid plague intended to dominate the Force, and Vader discovering the Schism Imperial, a faction led by Palpatine’s advisor Sly Moore.

The same run also followed familiar characters through emotional connective stories. Luke grappled with the truth about his father and his path toward becoming a Jedi, while Leia, Lando, and Vader received stories of their own. The crowded impression came from the combination: personal turning points and galaxy-scale schemes were all being fitted between two films.
How the 2020-era run ended
Marvel confirmed that the then-current volumes of Star Wars and Darth Vader would conclude with issue 50. Whitbrook reported in 2024 that both finales were planned as 50-page comics for September of that year. Those figures describe the announcement as reported at the time; they are not a measure of the stories’ in-universe duration.

At the time of Whitbrook’s article, Marvel had not definitively announced where the next era would be set. Subsequent official listings answered that question: Marvel’s listing for Star Wars (2025) #1 gives a May 7, 2025 publication date and places the new adventure in the wake of Return of the Jedi. Its promotional description reads: “AN EPIC NEW ADVENTURE BEGINS FOR LUKE, LEIA AND HAN IN THE WAKE OF RETURN OF THE JEDI!”

The shift is a change in timeline placement: from stories squeezed between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi to a new era after Return of the Jedi. It establishes a post-film setting for the 2025 main series, but it does not by itself show that the new stories are less crowded or more successful.
