Netflix released its trailer feature on January 14, 2026, and listed the film’s U.S. release for January 16. The “Miami Vice” comparison describes its setting and crime-thriller atmosphere—not an official sequel, replacement, or franchise connection.
What is The Rip about?
A Miami-Dade tactical narcotics team finds more than $20 million at a run-down stash house. The discovery puts the officers under pressure: as word of the seizure reaches outsiders, the team must secure and count the cash while deciding whom they can trust. The amount is a plot detail described by Netflix, not an independently verified real-world figure.

Damon plays Lieutenant Dane Dumars, newly made the group’s boss. Affleck plays Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne, Dumars’s longtime peer. Their changed workplace hierarchy adds tension to a story in which the officers may be targets because of what they have found. Writer-director Joe Carnahan told Netflix that they “can’t leave, which makes them targets for a bunch of bad guys.”
Why is it being compared with Miami Vice?
The connection is tonal and geographic: both evoke crime stories set in Miami. The Associated Press used “Miami Vice” as shorthand for The Rip’s Miami crime-thriller territory. Netflix describes The Rip as its own story about police, a cash seizure, and fraying trust; it does not present the film as part of, a sequel to, or a replacement for the Miami Vice franchise.
