Bonanza was filmed primarily on Los Angeles sound stages, with exterior location work around Lake Tahoe. Its famous Ponderosa Ranch was a later visitor attraction with a replica of the Hollywood ranch-house sets—not the production’s sole filming location.
Where was Bonanza filmed?
The series combined studio production in Los Angeles with outdoor filming at Lake Tahoe. CBS describes the Los Angeles sound stages as including the Ponderosa ranch-house sets, while Tahoe provided scenery for exterior shots. The production also used a Tahoe property where horses could be kept, according to CBS.

That distinction matters: the familiar ranch interiors were made on studio sets, while the Tahoe landscape appeared in location footage. The available location information does not provide a verified, episode-by-episode record of every filming site.
Where was the Bonanza opening filmed?
The opening credits used Bourne’s Meadow on the east shore of Lake Tahoe as their backdrop, according to the Thunderbird Lake Tahoe Preservation Society. That identifies the opening sequence’s setting; it does not mean every exterior scene was filmed in the meadow.

Was Bonanza filmed at the Ponderosa Ranch?
Not as the only filming location, and not in the way the attraction’s name might suggest. The Lake Tahoe Ponderosa Ranch was a visitor attraction associated with the show. Its ranch house replicated the Hollywood sets, while the production itself used Los Angeles stages and filmed some exteriors around Tahoe. The preservation society’s timeline says the attraction closed in 2004.
The Tahoe location had a direct connection to filming. Royce Anderson, whose parents owned the property used by the production, recalled that his father ran a riding stable and that the production came looking for a place to film and keep horses. Anderson said, “They started filming. We started building more and more sets,” as quoted by CBS.

Was Bonanza filmed in real Virginia City?
The real Virginia City, Nevada, and the Western street shown in the series are not the same place. CBS notes that the historic town looks different from its television counterpart. A separate IMDb location listing identifies a Paramount Studios Western street backlot as a filming location, but IMDb listings are user-editable and do not establish a comprehensive record of where each episode was shot.
What happened to the Ponderosa Ranch attraction?
The attraction closed in 2004, according to the Thunderbird Lake Tahoe Preservation Society’s timeline. It is not a currently open theme attraction, so do not plan a visit on the assumption that the former ranch site offers public access. The closure date alone does not establish what access, if any, is available today.

How much of the series was filmed in Tahoe?
The sources establish that Tahoe was used for exterior location work, but they do not quantify how many episodes or scenes were filmed there. The preservation society reports that Bonanza produced 431 episodes before its finale aired on January 16, 1973; that total does not indicate how many were shot at Tahoe. Its timeline also says the attraction drew 200,000 visitors in its final year before closing in 2004. CBS separately reported more than 200,000 annual visitors in its 2002 article, so visitor numbers should be understood as period-specific rather than current.
