Production began in Vancouver in September 2021, with Mammoth Studios in nearby Burnaby serving as the primary production site. The series depicts Japan in 1600, but its confirmed season-one production footprint is in Canada.
Where was Shōgun filmed?
The first season was produced in and around Vancouver, British Columbia. The Walt Disney Company says principal photography began in Vancouver in September 2021 and continued for ten months. The American Society of Cinematographers identifies Mammoth Studios in Burnaby as the production’s primary site, with the surrounding region providing forests, fields, and coastline.

Those locations and constructed sets were used to evoke Japan around 1600. The production had initially wanted to film in Japan, but the COVID-19 pandemic put that plan on hold. Disney’s behind-the-scenes account describes how the crew built the show’s setting in British Columbia instead.
Was Shōgun filmed in Japan?
Not principally: the confirmed season-one locations are in British Columbia. Japan is the story’s setting, not the production’s main filming location. That distinction matters because the landscapes on screen are meant to represent Japan, while the production information identifies Vancouver, Burnaby, and the surrounding region as the places used to make the series.

What is known about the production’s scale?
In a February 5, 2025 interview with Disney Japan, FX chairman John Landgraf reported that the production had 210 total shooting days and that a large set measured 14万平方フィート—approximately 14,000 square feet. These are Landgraf’s reported production figures, not independently audited totals.
Can you visit the Shōgun filming locations?
The available official location guide does not provide a detailed directory of season-one sites. FX’s locations guide is a high-level guide and gallery entry point, not a verified visitor itinerary. The sources identifying Mammoth Studios and the surrounding landscape do not establish that any particular set or filming location is open to the public.

Be cautious with lists that name a specific park, street, or shoreline without production-specific confirmation. General Vancouver-area film-location listings and fan reports do not, on their own, verify that Shōgun filmed there. A complete, production-confirmed map of season-one sites is not established by the available sources.

No. FX announced on April 30, 2025 that season two was scheduled to begin physical production in Vancouver in January 2026. That dated plan concerns the next season; it does not add filming locations to season one or change where its production is confirmed to have taken place. See the FX announcement.
