On June 14, 2024, Bryson City Police announced that Wayt had been located and that the case was closed. Contemporaneous coverage reported that the department released no details about where he had been found. Its update was quoted as: “No further information available at this time. Case is closed.” ABC11
Why Oklahoma and New Mexico were mentioned
During the search, Bryson City Police Chief Charlie Robinson told Us Weekly that Wayt had been seen on surveillance at a Verizon store in Oklahoma. Robinson also said, “We have information he was in New Mexico at one point.” These were a confirmed sighting and reported travel information; neither was announced as the place where police ultimately confirmed he was located.
What is known about the last reported sighting and case closure
Wayt was last reported seen outside a Walgreens in Bryson City, North Carolina, on June 9, 2024. He and Amber Portwood had traveled to the area for a family wedding. Five days later, police closed the case after saying he had been located.

TMZ reported that Wayt called the department from a restricted number on the afternoon of June 14 and told officers he was well. That account may explain how police learned he was safe, but it does not establish where he was when he called. The department’s public update did not provide a physical recovery location.
