Several television series and short films fill in the years between Hiccup’s major adventures, while Dragons: The Nine Realms jumps 1,300 years into the future. The 2025 live-action film is different: it retells the original story rather than continuing it.

The easiest movie-only order
If you are interested in the core feature-film story rather than every piece of continuity, watch:
- How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
- How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014)
- How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019)
The television shows add character development and world-building, but they are not required to understand the three animated movies.
Where the 2025 live-action movie belongs
How to Train Your Dragon (2025) is a live-action reimagining of the 2010 animated film. It is not a fourth animated-film sequel and should not be placed between The Hidden World and The Nine Realms.
There are two sensible ways to watch it:
- After the animated continuity: Treat it as an alternate retelling and compare its choices with the original.
- Before the animated films: Watch it first if you want to encounter the basic premise in live action before seeing the version that began the animated franchise.
Where to watch in the U.S.: Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Amazon Prime Video with Ads. Rental and purchase options include Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, Fandango At Home, and FlixFling.
Optional spin-off: Dragons: Rescue Riders
Rescue Riders is separate from Hiccup and Toothless’s main story. It follows twins Dak and Leyla, who communicate with dragons and help protect them. You can watch it independently without interrupting the chronological order above.
| Order | Series | Seasons | U.S. availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dragons: Rescue Riders | 1–2 | Netflix, Netflix Kids, and Netflix Standard with Ads |
| 2 | Dragons Rescue Riders: Heroes of the Sky | 1–2 | Peacock Premium and Peacock Premium Plus |
A practical placement is after The Hidden World and Homecoming, although its self-contained premise means it can be watched whenever you want a younger-skewing dragon adventure.
How to find the unavailable shorts
The four classic shorts are not currently gathered under one U.S. streaming subscription listing:
- Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon
- Book of Dragons
- Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury
- Dawn of the Dragon Racers
The physical How to Train Your Dragon: The Short Film Collection includes all four. Some listings may instead use the title How to Train Your Dragon: Legends; that name describes a package of Boneknapper, Book of Dragons, and Gift of the Night Fury, not an additional feature-length film.

Release order versus story order
For a first viewing, release order is also defensible: watch the three animated films as they arrived, then explore the series and shorts. Chronological order is more useful if you want the events to flow naturally. The most important correction is to place Race to the Edge between Defenders of Berk and How to Train Your Dragon 2, despite the series arriving after the second movie.
FAQ
Do I need to watch the television shows before the movies?
No. The three animated movies tell a complete central story on their own. The shows mainly add adventures, characters, and dragon lore between the films.
Where does Race to the Edge fit?
Watch all six seasons after Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk, and Dawn of the Dragon Racers, but before How to Train Your Dragon 2. Its release date came later than the movie, but its story takes place earlier.
Is the 2025 movie a sequel to The Hidden World?
No. The 2025 film is a live-action reimagining of the first animated movie. It is an alternate version of the origin story, not the next chapter in the animated continuity.
What is the shortest complete watch order?
Watch How to Train Your Dragon (2010), How to Train Your Dragon 2, and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. Add Homecoming afterward if you want a brief epilogue.
The Bottom Line
For the main animated continuity, watch How to Train Your Dragon, the four early shorts, Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk, Dawn of the Dragon Racers, all six seasons of Race to the Edge, How to Train Your Dragon 2, The Hidden World, Homecoming, and then the optional Snoggletog Log. Finish with The Nine Realms if you want the far-future continuation. Keep the 2025 live-action film separate as a reimagining.
