Sony Pictures lists the film for digital purchase or rental discovery and on Blu-ray and DVD; live performances require checking theatres in your area; and official recordings include the Broadway revival album, a 40th Anniversary two-album set, and a 2023 Spanish cast recording.
At a glance: choose the format you actually want
“Where to watch Godspell” can mean three different products. A ticket takes you to a live interpretation by a particular company on a particular date. The 1973 movie is a filmed adaptation with its own cast, staging and visual style. Cast albums let you hear stage performances, but they are audio releases rather than videos of a show. Use this table to avoid buying or streaming the wrong version.
| Format | What you experience | Officially identified access points | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live stage production | A theatre company’s performance of a licensed version | Local theatre calendars and venue box offices | No single, comprehensive public schedule is established; city and date determine availability |
| 1973 film | The Columbia Pictures screen adaptation | Digital storefront listings plus Blu-ray and DVD listings from Sony Pictures | Retailer inventory, pricing and territory availability can change |
| Broadway revival cast recording | Audio from the Broadway revival production | Ghostlight Records and Apple Music, as listed on the official recordings page | It is an album, not a filmed stage performance |
| 40th Anniversary set | The original cast album together with the movie soundtrack | Masterworks Broadway, Apple Music and Amazon, as listed by the official recordings page | Check whether you are buying physical media or accessing digital audio |
| 2023 Spanish cast recording | The cast album from the Spanish production associated with Antonio Banderas and Emilio Aragón | Digital and streaming services worldwide were announced; Concord catalogs it as a digital album | Exact services and current CD stock vary by country |
How to watch the 1973 Godspell film
What Sony Pictures lists
Sony Pictures’ official film page identifies Godspell as a 1973 Columbia Pictures release and displays a 1973 copyright notice renewed in 2001. The page presents the film as available “Now on Digital, Blu-ray™ and DVD.” It names Apple TV, Prime Video, Fandango, Verizon Fios, Xfinity, DIRECTV, Amazon, Walmart and Barnes & Noble as places to look.
Those names are distributor-listed destinations, not a promise that every one has the title in every country at every moment. A storefront may show a rental, a purchase, a disc listing, or no offer at all after its catalogue changes. Open the service from your own country, search the exact title, and confirm the release year before paying.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Digital viewing: verify the transaction type
- Search the Sony-listed storefronts available in your region for “Godspell” and select the 1973 film, not a cast album or a similarly named title.
- Read the offer label carefully. “Rent,” “buy,” and an included-with-subscription badge are different rights and different costs.
- Check the playback devices, rental window and resolution shown on the service’s title page.
- Confirm the language, subtitle and closed-caption options before checkout if those features matter to you.
- Keep the receipt or library record. Digital rights can differ from one storefront account to another, especially when you travel.
The official listing does not establish that the film is included in any particular subscription catalogue. Do not infer subscription access from the fact that a service appears on the distributor’s page; the current title page for your location is the deciding evidence.
Blu-ray and DVD: when a disc is the better choice
A physical copy gives you a one-time purchase rather than a rental window and does not depend on a title remaining in a streaming catalogue. Sony’s page points to Blu-ray and DVD and names Amazon, Walmart and Barnes & Noble among retailers to check. Before ordering, verify the edition, disc format, region compatibility with your player, subtitle information and whether the seller is offering new or used stock. Retailer availability and price are not fixed by the studio page.
If you are buying for a classroom, archive or repeated group viewing, a disc can be easier to schedule than individual digital accounts. That convenience does not automatically create public-performance rights; showing a film to an audience may involve separate legal considerations from personal viewing.

Finding a live stage production
Why there is no single “official stream” of local performances
Live Godspell performances are produced by separate theatres, schools and community companies. The sources that document the show’s licensing options do not provide a current, comprehensive audience ticket calendar. Consequently, a reliable answer requires your city and date range rather than a universal ticket link.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A practical search process
- Search your city, nearby cities and the dates you can attend with terms such as “Godspell theatre,” “Godspell musical tickets” or the venue’s own season page.
- Check the theatre’s official calendar and box office, not only a secondary event listing. Confirm the venue address, performance date, start time, running-time information and ticket conditions.
- Read the production description for the version being presented. A listing may identify the traditional script, the 2012 revision associated with the 2011–2012 Broadway revival, or Godspell Jr.
- Ask the box office whether the listed performance is still on sale, moved, cancelled or subject to age or access restrictions. Small-company schedules can change after a season brochure is printed.
- For a tailored recommendation, provide the city or travel radius and the date window; without those details, a claim that the show is “playing near you” would be unreliable.
What the licensed versions mean to an audience
Music Theatre International licenses several versions: the traditional version, the 2012 revised version linked to the 2011–2012 Broadway revival, and Godspell Jr. The version affects text, musical arrangements, length and casting choices, so read the theatre’s description if you want a particular interpretation. A school production labeled Godspell Jr. is not the same offering as a professional production of the full show.
Ticket rights are different from streaming rights
A theatre’s performance license authorizes it to present the stage work under the terms of that license. It does not, by itself, give the company permission to livestream, upload a recording or sell a filmed version. Concord’s guidance says online, streaming and video rights are unavailable through Concord for most shows and may be controlled elsewhere, requiring case-by-case approval. If a theatre advertises a stream, use the theatre’s own announcement and confirm that it has obtained the additional rights; do not assume a stage ticket includes online access.

Where to listen to Godspell recordings
Broadway revival cast recording
The official recordings page lists the Broadway Revival Cast Recording and identifies Ghostlight Records and Apple Music as destinations. This is the appropriate choice if you want to hear the Broadway revival’s cast and arrangements without watching a screen. Availability, playback quality and purchase options can differ between a record label shop and a music service, so check whether the page offers a permanent download, a physical product or on-demand listening.
40th Anniversary: original cast recording plus movie soundtrack
The Godspell 40th Anniversary: Original Cast Recording plus Movie Soundtrack set combines two distinct recordings: the Grammy-winning original cast album and the soundtrack from the film. The official page lists Masterworks Broadway, Apple Music and Amazon as destinations. Select this set when you want both the stage-originated album and the movie audio in one package. It does not contain a filmed stage performance; the movie soundtrack is an audio companion to the 1973 screen adaptation.

Earlier recordings
The recordings page also notes 2001 tour, 2000 off-Broadway, London and 1993 studio editions. These entries document the existence of those releases, but they are not presented as continuously stocked products. If you are seeking one of them, search the title and edition at reputable retailers or libraries and inspect the seller’s condition, format and shipping details. Do not treat an old catalogue entry as proof that a current digital service carries it.

2023 Spanish cast recording
Concord announced on December 15, 2023 that the cast album from the Spanish production associated with Antonio Banderas and Emilio Aragón was available on streaming and digital platforms worldwide. The announcement also said CDs were available for purchase in Spain and offered United States pre-orders through Concord Theatricals Recordings. Concord’s catalogue lists Godspell (2023 Spanish Cast Recording) as a digital album.
The announcement establishes the release and its stated distribution at that time, not permanent access on every service. If you need a CD, check current Spanish or United States stock before recommending or ordering one. If you need the Spanish-language performance, verify the album’s language and edition on the service page rather than relying on a generic Godspell search result.
Match the version to your reason for watching or listening
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| See actors perform the show in front of an audience | A local full-stage production | You experience live interpretation, design and audience interaction; dates and cities must be checked locally |
| Watch a complete visual adaptation at home | The 1973 film | It is the only option in the identified listings that is a movie, with digital, Blu-ray and DVD routes |
| Hear the Broadway revival | Broadway Revival Cast Recording | It preserves the revival as an audio album |
| Compare stage-originated and film audio | 40th Anniversary set | It pairs the original cast album with the movie soundtrack |
| Hear the Spanish production | 2023 Spanish Cast Recording | It is the identified Spanish-language cast release; service and CD availability depend on territory |
Common availability problems and how to avoid them
The title appears, but the wrong item is offered
Search results can mix the film, cast albums, soundtrack tracks and unrelated uploads. Use the year 1973 for the movie, look for the words “cast recording” when you want an album, and confirm the production or language before purchase. A soundtrack listing is audio even when its artwork uses scenes from the film.

A retailer shows a listing but no stock
Distributor pages often remain useful as discovery tools after a retailer sells out. Check another named retailer, a local library catalogue or a legitimate second-hand listing, and verify the disc region and condition. Do not assume that a product page means immediate shipment.
A service is unavailable in your country
Digital rights are territorial. A title listed by Sony Pictures or Concord may not be licensed to the same services everywhere. Use the storefront set to your billing and viewing country, and avoid VPN-based workarounds that may violate a service’s terms. For physical media, check region coding and shipping restrictions before ordering across borders.
You want to watch a stage recording
The identified stage products are recordings for listening, not filmed performances. A theatre may separately announce an authorized stream, but a stage licence alone does not grant that right. Look for an explicit statement from the producing company about an authorized video release.
For schools and theatres: obtaining permission
If you are producing Godspell rather than buying a ticket, start with Music Theatre International’s licensing information. Its catalogue identifies the traditional version, the 2012 revised version and Godspell Jr. Compare the version description with your cast, venue and intended audience before requesting rights.

Licensing is permission to perform a copyrighted work; it is not a general permission to copy, film or distribute it. Ask the rights representative specifically about rehearsal use, recordings, livestreams, archival video and any audience-access plan. Concord’s guidance warns that online and video rights for most shows may be controlled elsewhere and require separate, case-by-case approval. Keep written confirmation of every right your production receives.
Bottom line
For an immediate home viewing, begin with Sony Pictures’ 1973 film listings and choose a currently available digital, Blu-ray or DVD offer in your region. For a live experience, search local theatre calendars and verify the production’s version and date directly with the box office. For audio, choose the Broadway revival album, the 40th Anniversary pairing of original cast and movie soundtrack, or the 2023 Spanish cast recording according to the language and production you want. Treat each format as a separate release, and never assume that a ticket or stage licence includes a livestream or filmed performance.
