Best option: buy the complete 2003 series on disc
If you want to watch the original adaptation legally and without waiting for a licensing change, look for a Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) complete series DVD. The television series contains 51 episodes, and a complete DVD set should identify the original 2003 production rather than Brotherhood.
There are also listings for a Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 Blu-ray. The North American Blu-ray release is cataloged as a complete six-disc set. A Blu-ray may be preferable for picture quality and packaging, but current stock and the authenticity of individual marketplace listings require careful checking. A listing appearing on a marketplace does not, by itself, prove that the copy is an official release.
Before purchasing: compare the seller’s description and photographs with the expected release. Physical-media buying checklist
- Look for the words “Fullmetal Alchemist (2003)” or “original series”.
- Confirm that the set contains 51 episodes, not the different episode run of Brotherhood.
- Check whether it is DVD or Blu-ray and whether your player supports that format.

Is the 2003 series on Crunchyroll?
Crunchyroll has a page specifically labeled Fullmetal Alchemist (2003), but that page says the title cannot be watched and recommends similar programs. Crunchyroll’s active Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood listing is a separate matter: it has episodes and English and Japanese audio options, but it does not provide the 2003 series.

Do not confuse the 2003 anime with Brotherhood
Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are different television productions. The 2003 series runs for 51 episodes and eventually follows its own story direction. Brotherhood is a later adaptation that follows the manga more directly and has a different episode count.
Brotherhood is not a second season of the 2003 anime. If a streaming service offers Brotherhood, that does not answer the question of where to watch the original series.

Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa is a 2005 feature-length sequel to the 2003 television continuity. It serves as the continuation and conclusion of that version’s story, but it is separate from the 51-episode series and is not automatically included with every DVD or Blu-ray set.
