Ohio’s state park offers the island’s clearest documented camping inventory—full-hookup, electric, and non-electric sites—plus two furnished yurts and two Sherman Cabins. Private inns, cottages, and vacation rentals add more space and privacy, but their availability, prices, amenities, and pet rules must be confirmed with each operator. The campground closes for winter, ferry service can be seasonal or weather-dependent, and short-term rentals operate under a Village registration program, so verify those details before paying a deposit.
Which kinds of accommodation are available?
Kelleys Island covers about 4.5 square miles, yet overnight choices fall into three practical groups: the state park campground, furnished units within the park, and privately operated lodging. No single source provides a live island-wide inventory, so treat local directories and visitor pages as starting points rather than proof that a room or house is vacant.
| Stay type | What is documented | Best fit | Details to confirm before booking |
|---|---|---|---|
| State park campsites | Ohio Department of Natural Resources lists full-hookup, electric, and non-electric campsites. The campground closes for winter. | Travelers bringing tents, trailers, or RVs who need a defined campground and, where available, utility connections. | Open and close dates, site inventory, hookup configuration, facilities, pet-site rules, reservation terms, and current fees. Nightly prices are not stated in the cited park information. |
| Furnished park units | The park page lists two furnished yurts and two Sherman Cabins. | Visitors who want a roof and basic furnishings without booking a private house. | Sleeping capacity, kitchen and bathroom equipment, bedding, minimum stay, check-in rules, accessibility, dates, and current rates. Exact amenities are not stated on the cited summary. |
| Private rentals and inns | The Kelleys Island Chamber of Commerce links visitors to rentals, while a local directory lists properties including inns and cottages. | Couples, families, and groups choosing location, privacy, or a house-style layout. | Whether the listing is operating, available for your dates, its total price and taxes, cancellation policy, capacity, amenities, parking, pet policy, and direct booking terms. |
A directory entry establishes that a property is listed, not that it has an open room, a particular quality level, or a current rate. It also does not turn every listing into a hotel: some are cottages, homes, or other short-term accommodations.
State park camping: the most clearly documented option
Choose the site type that matches your equipment
Ohio DNR identifies three campsite categories: full-hookup, electric, and non-electric. Full-hookup sites are the logical choice for an RV that needs the listed utility connections; an electric site may suit a trailer or tent setup that only needs power; and a non-electric site is the simplest option for traditional camping. The source does not establish how many sites fall into each category, so select from the inventory shown for your dates rather than relying on an assumed total.

How to reserve a campsite
- Open the current Kelleys Island state-park page maintained by Ohio DNR and check whether the campground is operating for your intended dates.
- Use the park’s online reservation path or call the reservation line identified on that page.
- Choose the campsite category that matches your vehicle, power, and water needs; do not assume a non-electric site can be changed to an electric or full-hookup site after arrival.
- Read the current site description, occupancy limits, arrival and departure windows, and cancellation terms before submitting payment.
- Save the confirmation and recheck the park’s operating notice and ferry status shortly before departure.
The campground closes for winter. Ohio DNR’s listing is the appropriate place to confirm the opening and closing dates in the year you travel; a reservation search outside the operating season should not be interpreted as a technical error.
Pets at the campground
The local visitor FAQ says the park has special pet sites and warns that there are few pet-friendly accommodations on the island. A pet-site reference is not permission to use any site with an animal. Ask the park about the current pet-site designation, leash and cleanup rules, occupancy limits, and any additional charge before reserving.
Yurts and Sherman Cabins
For visitors who want more shelter than a tent, the state park lists two furnished yurts and two Sherman Cabins. “Furnished” does not, by itself, tell you whether a unit includes a private bathroom, cooking equipment, linens, heating or cooling, or an accessible entrance. Those details can differ by unit and season, so use the park reservation record or call the reservation line for the exact unit you are considering.
Questions to ask about a furnished unit
- How many people can sleep there, and what beds or bunks are supplied?
- Is a bathroom inside the unit, nearby in a campground building, or unavailable?
- Are cookware, dishes, a refrigerator, heat, air conditioning, and linens provided?
- What must guests bring, and what cleaning responsibility applies at checkout?
- Are there minimum-night requirements, quiet hours, accessibility limitations, or restrictions on pets?
- What happens if ferry service is suspended by weather and you cannot reach the island?
These units are a useful middle ground: they keep you within the park reservation system while avoiding the equipment requirements of a campsite. The cited park information does not publish a complete amenity list or current nightly prices, so do not budget from an assumed cabin or yurt rate.

Private inns, cottages, and vacation rentals
Where to find private lodging
The Chamber’s trip-planning page directs visitors to rental information, and a local directory presents a range of island properties, including inns and cottages. Start with those local sources, then move to the individual operator’s booking page or contact method. A listing may be seasonal, may require a minimum stay, or may no longer accept reservations even if it remains visible in a directory.
How to evaluate a private listing
- Capacity: Count actual beds, not just a maximum guest number. Confirm whether sofa beds, lofts, or bunk rooms suit everyone in your party.
- Location: Ask for the exact address and driving or walking access from the ferry landing. Island distances are short, but luggage, bicycles, and mobility needs can change what feels convenient.
- Facilities: Confirm the number of bathrooms, kitchen equipment, air conditioning or heat, laundry, internet, outdoor space, and parking. None of these features is established for every directory entry.
- Price: Request the complete total, including cleaning charges, taxes, deposits, and any service or pet fees. No comprehensive current rate sheet is available from the cited visitor sources.
- Terms: Read payment timing, cancellation, damage-deposit, check-in, and checkout rules. Ask how a weather-related ferry cancellation is handled.
- Pets: Get written confirmation that your animal and its size or breed are permitted. The local FAQ characterizes pet-friendly supply as limited.
Do not infer quality, inspection status, or vacancy from an address in a directory. Those are property-level facts that only the operator or the Village can confirm.
Short-term-rental rules you should understand
The Village of Kelleys Island publishes a Transient Rental Program page for operators. Its update dated March 11, 2026 set May 30, 2026 as the application or renewal deadline for that year and states that an operator who had not completed the application or renewal by the deadline would not be permitted to operate a short-term rental on the island. The page also lists a $600 annual application fee, at least $300,000 in personal-liability coverage, inspections for new applicants, and registration for Erie County lodging tax.
The Village page states: “If you have not completed your application/renewal application by the deadline, you will not be permitted to operate a Short Term Rental on the Island.”

Those figures are operator requirements, not what a guest pays for a night. They also describe the 2026 update, not a guarantee that the same fee, deadline, insurance wording, or inspection process will remain unchanged. Before booking, ask the host for the property’s current registration information and consult the Village’s latest program page. If a host cannot explain the property’s status or directs you to ignore local requirements, choose another listing.
Planning around ferries and island access
The island can be reached by ferry, private boat, or airplane. Ohio DNR describes ferry access for cars, RVs, bicycles, and pedestrians from the mainland at Marblehead and Sandusky, while the Chamber provides ferry-service information. Service calendars, operating days, prices, capacity, and weather status can change, and some service is seasonal.
A reliable arrival plan
- Check the ferry operator’s schedule for the exact dates of your stay, including the last return sailing.
- Decide whether you are bringing a car, RV, bicycle, or only personal luggage; vehicle reservations and loading rules may differ from walk-on travel.
- Allow time for lines, unloading, and a weather delay. Do not schedule a mainland connection so tightly that one missed sailing strands your party.
- Give your lodging host an estimated arrival window and ask about late check-in if the crossing is delayed.
- Recheck the operator’s service alert before leaving for Marblehead or Sandusky.
A private boat or airplane may avoid a ferry timetable but introduces its own docking, landing, weather, and transportation questions. Your lodging choice should account for how you will carry supplies and reach the property after arrival.

Choose a yurt or Sherman Cabin when…
You want a furnished base but do not need a full private rental. This option can reduce the equipment you carry while keeping you near campground facilities. Confirm sleeping arrangements and bathroom access rather than assuming the units resemble a hotel room.
Choose an inn or vacation rental when…
Your party needs a particular number of bedrooms, a kitchen, more privacy, or a location outside the park. Begin with Chamber and local-directory leads, then verify every property detail directly and confirm the listing’s current operating status.
Choose by pet needs first when…
Traveling with a dog or another animal narrows the field. Start by asking the park about its designated pet sites and contacting private operators before paying. Never rely on a generic “pets possible” search filter without written policy and any restrictions.

Common booking problems and fixes
The calendar shows no dates
That may mean the property is closed seasonally, fully booked, or not maintaining its listing. Ask the operator directly and check another accommodation category, such as a park site instead of a private cottage.

The listing does not state amenities
Do not fill gaps with assumptions. Request a written inventory of beds, bathrooms, kitchen equipment, climate control, linens, and parking. If the answer is vague, select a property with clearer terms.
A ferry cancellation threatens check-in
Contact the lodging operator before the scheduled arrival and read the cancellation policy. Ask whether the reservation can be moved, refunded, or credited; never assume weather disruption automatically changes the contract.
A host cannot explain registration
Pause the booking and consult the Village’s current Transient Rental Program information. The 2026 Village update makes completion of the application or renewal a condition of operating, so a host’s uncertainty is a material warning sign.
What current sources do—and do not—establish
Ohio DNR establishes the documented park categories and the presence of two yurts and two Sherman Cabins, but not a complete live inventory, universal amenity list, or current prices. Chamber and directory pages help you discover private lodging, but they do not establish vacancies, service quality, or property-by-property rules. The local FAQ identifies special pet sites and limited pet-friendly supply, not a complete list of approved properties. Use each source for that narrow purpose and confirm the final details with the responsible operator.
