Where to Start with Luis Buñuel: A Beginner’s Guide to His Essential Films

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with a short, then move through Buñuel’s Mexican, Spanish and French periods: watch Un Chien Andalou (1929), Los olvidados (1950), Viridiana (1961), Belle de jour (1967), and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972). This five-film route begins with concentrated surrealist shock, adds social realism and dream logic, then develops into religious, sexual and class satire. It is a practical way to discover what Buñuel does without treating his most opaque films as mandatory homework.

The opening image of Un Chien Andalou contains famously graphic eye imagery. If that is a problem, begin with Los olvidados instead. There is no single correct first Buñuel film: choose the route that matches your tolerance for provocation and your interest in surrealism, social drama, desire or comedy.

The five-film route at a glance

Film Year and period What it introduces Accessibility note
Un Chien Andalou 1929; early Spain/France avant-garde Surrealist shock, dream association and anti-naturalistic images Only 21 minutes, but its opening eye image is graphic and its logic is deliberately discontinuous
Los olvidados 1950; Mexican period Social observation, poverty, violence and a dream sequence Its delinquent-boy narrative gives you a strong foothold while still disrupting realism
Viridiana 1961; Spanish film Religious and bourgeois satire The premise is easy to follow; the attacks on respectability and provocative feast imagery are not gentle
Belle de jour 1967; late French period Desire, fantasy and Buñuel’s work with screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière A comparatively inviting feature-length entry to the late films
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie 1972; late French period Class satire, repetition and shifts between apparent reality and fantasy A clear comic premise makes the surreal turns easier to enter
The Milky Way 1969; late French period Religious history and nonlinear, symbol-heavy storytelling Save it for later; the British Film Institute describes it as more opaque than the two late films above

The comparisons are an editorial viewing route, not a claim that one film is objectively the best. They draw on the British Film Institute’s beginner guidance and catalog descriptions, rather than on a new viewing test or popularity ranking.

Why this order works

Buñuel’s career lasted nearly half a century and crossed several national cinemas. He was born in Spain, made work in Spain and France at the beginning of his career, established a major Mexican period, returned to Spain for important films, and made a group of late French-language features. The filmography contains more than 30 features as well as the famous early short. A first-time viewer therefore needs a route across periods, not a list confined to one celebrated phase.

The sequence also increases the amount of narrative commitment gradually. The 21-minute short gives you Buñuel’s habit of connecting images by association rather than ordinary cause and effect. Los olvidados then places that irrationality inside a recognizable social world. Viridiana makes his hostility to religious and bourgeois respectability central. Belle de jour turns toward private fantasy and desire, while The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie makes social ritual itself the joke. By the fifth film, repetitions, interruptions and impossible transitions feel like a method you can follow rather than a test you must pass.

1. Un Chien Andalou (1929): the concentrated surrealist shock

What you will see

Made with Salvador Dalí, this silent 21-minute short is the quickest introduction to Buñuel’s refusal of conventional cinematic logic. Its images do not build a stable plot; they collide, recur and mutate according to dream association. The notorious opening eye image is deliberately graphic, so treat that as a content warning rather than an element to discover by surprise.

The point is not to decode every object into a fixed symbol. Notice how the film denies the viewer the reassuring chain of setup, motivation and payoff that mainstream storytelling normally supplies. A gesture can lead to an unrelated image; time can jump without explanation; an apparently ordinary action can become physically impossible. That anti-naturalism is the foundation for understanding later films, even when those films have more conventional stories.

How to watch it

  1. Before pressing play, decide whether graphic eye imagery is acceptable for you.
  2. Watch once without pausing or searching for an explanation. Let the collision of images establish the film’s tone.
  3. On a second viewing, track transitions: which images recur, which actions are interrupted, and where the film refuses to identify a stable reality?
  4. Do not demand a single allegorical key. Ask instead what expectations about narrative, desire and spectatorship the short is breaking.

If the imagery is a deal-breaker, skip to Los olvidados and return to the short later. Starting elsewhere does not mean you have missed the essential idea; it simply changes the order in which you encounter it.

2. Los olvidados (1950): social observation that turns uncanny

The narrative foothold

Set among delinquent boys in Mexico City, Los olvidados belongs to Buñuel’s Mexican period and has the outward shape of a neorealist-style social drama. Poverty, violence and limited choices are not decorative background: they shape what the young characters can do and how adults respond to them. That concrete setting gives a beginner an emotional and narrative route into Buñuel’s cinema after the abstraction of the opening short.

Where the surreal enters

The film does not simply alternate between “realistic” scenes and a separate fantasy film. Its eerie dream sequence grows out of the characters’ social and psychological pressures. An egg thrown at the camera is another small but unmistakable reminder that the screen is not a transparent window. Buñuel can ask you to observe social conditions closely and then make the image itself behave strangely.

What to notice

  • How the film presents deprivation without turning its young characters into a sentimental lesson.
  • How institutions and adults distribute blame, protection and punishment.
  • How the dream sequence changes your understanding of scenes that looked observational a moment earlier.
  • How the camera can be addressed or attacked, making the viewer part of the film’s moral discomfort.

This is often the best starting point for viewers who want a story before they commit to sustained surrealism. It also prevents a common misunderstanding: Buñuel is not only an artist of provocation and private fantasy. He can be a severe observer of social life, then let the irrational expose what realism alone cannot contain.

3. Viridiana (1961): charity, religion and respectable appearances

The setup

Viridiana follows a novice nun who tries to help beggars after her uncle’s death. The premise is straightforward enough to orient a new viewer, but Buñuel uses it to test the gap between charitable ideals and the structures of power, desire and respectability surrounding them.

The satire

Religious devotion and bourgeois propriety are both exposed as unstable performances. The film does not offer a simple replacement morality in which one group is pure and another corrupt. Instead, apparently virtuous intentions become entangled with control, fantasy and social hierarchy. The result is provocative because it attacks the comfort of believing that good intentions automatically produce humane outcomes.

The feast sequence

Keep an eye on the gathering of beggars, staged in a clear visual echo of the Last Supper. The reference is recognizable, but the behavior and social context make it irreverent rather than devotional. Buñuel’s humor works by placing a familiar emblem of order and sacrifice beside appetites, disorder and exclusion. The scene is best understood as a collision between sacred imagery and the material realities that respectable society prefers not to see.

Choose this film third if you want to understand Buñuel’s recurring attacks on the Catholic Church and the bourgeoisie. It is also a useful test of how you respond to his tone: the film can be funny, cruel, unsettling and politically pointed in the same sequence.

4. Belle de jour (1967): desire and the late French period

Why it belongs here

Belle de jour is a strong bridge from the social and religious satire of the earlier films to Buñuel’s late French work. Made with screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière, it opens a sustained investigation of desire and fantasy without requiring you to know the entire filmography first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How fantasy operates

The film asks you to question the border between what a character wants, imagines, remembers and experiences. Rather than treating fantasy as an explanatory side note, Buñuel gives it the same visual authority as ordinary events. That does not mean every scene is equally “real” or that the film has no structure. It means the structure is psychological: desire can interrupt routine, and an imagined possibility can exert practical force even when its status remains uncertain.

A useful viewing approach

  • Track changes in tone and texture rather than trying to label every episode immediately as fact or fantasy.
  • Ask who controls the image at each moment and whose desire is being represented.
  • Notice how bourgeois manners can coexist with impulses that those manners claim to suppress.
  • Compare its private fantasies with the public rituals disrupted in The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie.

Viewers drawn to relationship psychology may prefer to insert El (1953) before or after Belle de jour. That Mexican-period film is a natural companion for anyone interested in possessiveness, jealousy and the instability of intimate perception.

5. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972): the easiest late satire to enter

The comic engine

An upper-class group repeatedly tries to complete a meal, but the dinner keeps being postponed, interrupted or displaced by events that may belong to reality, dream or some unstable mixture of both. The premise is clear from the beginning, which makes this one of Buñuel’s most approachable late films.

Why the repetitions matter

Each failed meal turns a polite social ritual into a mechanism of exposure. Conversation, etiquette, diplomacy and hospitality appear orderly until an interruption reveals their dependence on performance. The repeated attempt to eat is not merely a running gag; it shows how a class protects its image by moving smoothly past violence, hypocrisy and absurdity.

As the film shifts between apparent reality and fantasy, the joke expands. No single level of reality is granted permanent authority, and the characters’ confidence in their social roles becomes part of the absurdity. After Belle de jour, you can recognize the same interest in desire and self-deception; here it is redirected toward a group and its rituals.

What makes it a good first feature for some viewers

If you prefer comedy, ensemble situations and a premise you can summarize in one sentence, start here rather than with the short. You will still encounter dream logic and deliberate discontinuity, but the recurring dinner problem gives you a stable line through the disruptions.

Choosing a different first film

The five-film order is a recommendation, not a rule. Use your strongest interest to choose an entry point:

If you are most interested in… Start with… Then consider…
Surrealist images and avant-garde cinema Un Chien Andalou The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
Social drama and marginalization Los olvidados Viridiana
Religion, charity and social hypocrisy Viridiana The Milky Way, once you are ready for a less transparent structure
Private desire and relationship psychology Belle de jour El (1953)
Comedy, class and formal repetition The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie The Phantom of Liberty (1974)
Linked episodes and formal play The Phantom of Liberty The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie

The Phantom of Liberty is especially useful after you have seen at least one of the late French films. Its linked episodes and formal play reward viewers who already understand that Buñuel is willing to abandon a conventional central plot. By contrast, the British Film Institute specifically identifies The Milky Way (1969) as more opaque than The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie or The Phantom of Liberty. Its religious history and nonlinear, symbol-heavy storytelling make it a better later choice than a first assignment.

Buñuel’s career in a map you can remember

Think of the route as three overlapping movements rather than sealed periods:

Early avant-garde: Spain and France

Un Chien Andalou is the decisive early landmark, made with Dalí. It establishes the image collision, anti-naturalism and irreverence that remain useful reference points even when later films become more narrative.

Mexican period

Los olvidados (1950) and El (1953) show Buñuel working through social reality and psychological disturbance in Mexico. The films differ in subject and method, so “Mexican period” should not be mistaken for one uniform style.

Spanish films

Viridiana (1961) and Tristana (1970) return to Spanish settings and institutions. In Viridiana, religious and bourgeois respectability become direct targets; the larger pattern is Buñuel’s suspicion of systems that present themselves as morally settled.

Late French period

Belle de jour (1967), The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), The Phantom of Liberty (1974) and That Obscure Object of Desire (1977) develop his interest in desire, class behavior, repetition and unstable reality. The late films are connected by recurring concerns, but they are not interchangeable: one may feel psychologically intimate, another openly comic, another episodic or structurally elusive.

The ideas that keep returning

The bourgeoisie and the Catholic Church

Buñuel repeatedly challenges the authority of bourgeois manners and Catholic institutions. He is not simply making anti-elite or anti-religious slogans. His films examine how institutions turn behavior into evidence of virtue, then reveal the desires and exclusions hidden beneath that evidence.

Incongruity instead of explanation

A Buñuel image often becomes powerful because it does not receive a neat explanation. A dream can sit beside an observed event; a sacred composition can frame profane behavior; an ordinary meal can become impossible. The resulting uncertainty is not an error to correct but part of the film’s argument about what respectable reality leaves out.

Desire that disrupts order

Desire in these films is rarely confined to a private confession. It changes how characters interpret other people, how social groups maintain appearances and how viewers decide what counts as real. Belle de jour makes that process intimate; The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie makes it collective and comic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rituals that collapse

Meals, ceremonies, charitable gestures and polite conversations promise order. Buñuel repeats or interrupts them until their underlying contradictions become visible. Watch what happens when a ritual cannot be completed: the failure often tells you more than a speech would.

A practical five-session viewing plan

  1. Session one: Watch Un Chien Andalou twice, accepting the graphic opening warning. Write down the transitions that feel most abrupt rather than searching for a definitive interpretation.
  2. Session two: Watch Los olvidados. Compare its social observation with the short’s dream association, especially around the eerie dream sequence.
  3. Session three: Watch Viridiana. Focus on how charitable intent, religious identity and bourgeois order collide, then consider the Last Supper-like feast as a visual argument rather than a puzzle.
  4. Session four: Watch Belle de jour. Keep separate notes for events that are clearly shared by other characters and experiences that may belong to fantasy or desire.
  5. Session five: Watch The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. Count the attempts to complete the meal and observe how each interruption changes your confidence about what is happening.

Discussing the films with another viewer can be more productive than looking for a single official explanation. Ask what each person considered real, which social rules were being protected, and where humor changed the ethical temperature of a scene.

Finding editions and further reading

Availability of films on streaming services and in physical shops changes by country and date, so check the current listings for your region rather than relying on a permanent platform claim. The Luis Buñuel Film Institute’s filmography can provide synopsis and viewing context, but it should not be treated as proof that a particular stream is currently licensed everywhere.

If you want to own a group of films, the Criterion catalog includes a Three Films by Luis Buñuel collector’s set and individual DVD and Blu-ray releases. The catalog establishes the formats, not a current retail price, stock level or affiliate arrangement.

Buñuel in his own words

“[The cinema] is an instrument of poetry, with all that that word can imply of the sense of liberation, of subversion of reality, of the threshold of the marvellous world of the subconscious, of nonconformity with the limited society that surrounds us.”

— Luis Buñuel, quoted by the British Film Institute

That statement, reproduced by the British Film Institute in a quote feature dated 21 February 2014, describes the tension running through the route: cinema can break open reality while also challenging the society that calls its own conventions normal. Buñuel’s shorter and more accessible films let you see that tension in different forms before you tackle the works that demand greater patience.

“Thank God I’m an atheist.”

— Luis Buñuel, quoted by the British Film Institute

Taken alongside Viridiana and the later religious satire, the line is less a complete philosophy than a useful warning about his tone. Buñuel’s humor can be playful, but it is rarely deferential toward institutions that claim unquestioned authority.

Where to go after the first five

Continue with El if the psychological tensions of desire and possession interested you most. Choose The Phantom of Liberty if you want linked episodes and more visible formal experimentation. Try Tristana to extend the Spanish period, or That Obscure Object of Desire to follow the late work’s fascination with desire and unstable identity. Leave The Milky Way until you are comfortable with nonlinear, symbol-heavy storytelling and religious history presented without a conventional explanatory path.

The most useful beginner’s principle is simple: do not confuse difficulty with importance. Begin with the film whose subject and form invite you in, then use the others to test how Buñuel’s recurring targets and methods change across countries, decades and genres.
