If you’re asking “Where do you read manga?” or “Where can I read manga online?”, start with the publisher of the series you want, then check official services such as MANGA Plus, VIZ, and Manga UP!. No one service carries everything, and the options differ by country, language, reading limits, and price. The available information supports six useful services or leads—not a verified ranking of nine, and not a claim that every option is equivalent to Batoto.
Which manga-reading services are worth checking?
Catalogs change, so search for your exact series and chapter before subscribing. These services and leads have different scopes: some are publisher-operated manga libraries, while others are adjacent comic platforms.
| Service | What is established | Access and important limits |
|---|---|---|
| MANGA Plus by Shueisha | Official Shueisha service with Weekly Shonen Jump titles and other magazine works near their Japanese release. Shueisha says, “This service is completely official.” Source: MANGA Plus FAQ | Free access, but not necessarily a permanent free archive. First Read Free applies to eligible ongoing simulpub titles in the app; exclusions and ticket-based chapters apply. See the reading rules below. |
| Shonen Jump by VIZ | VIZ advertises a digital vault of “20,000+ manga chapters” and lists series including One Piece and Chainsaw Man. Source: VIZ apps | VIZ’s page retrieved in 2026 displayed $3.99/month in the United States. It also lists free chapters, offline downloads, and volume purchases. Check current local pricing and terms. |
| VIZ Manga | VIZ advertises “10,000+ chapters” and lists series including Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and Nana. Source: VIZ apps | VIZ’s page retrieved in 2026 displayed $1.99/month in the United States. Free chapters, offline reading, and volume purchases are also listed; confirm current local availability and price. |
| Crunchyroll Manga | Readers can browse titles with a free account on the web or iOS and Android apps; the catalog described by Crunchyroll is in English. Source: Crunchyroll support | Reading requires Crunchyroll Premium with a manga add-on or qualifying Ultimate Fan membership. Access is restricted to members located in the United States and Canada. Details |
| Manga UP! | Square Enix’s app listing calls it the publisher’s official app, names titles including Fullmetal Alchemist, and reports 400+ manga and 30,000+ chapters. Source: Google Play listing | The listing describes free chapters and a Vault Pass. Its catalog counts are publisher/platform claims and may change; the listing alone does not establish all terms or title availability in every country. |
| WEBTOON | An adjacent comic-discovery option, not a direct equivalent to a large manga library. WEBTOON support says Originals are free to read and ongoing series update weekly. Source: WEBTOON support | Check whether the specific comic you want is available; this information does not establish a manga catalog comparable to the services above. |
| Omoi (formerly Azuki) | An Omoi FAQ dated November 2025 says its manga is licensed from publishers and that it pays royalties based on reading. Source: Omoi FAQ | The cited FAQ does not establish current catalog breadth, price, geographic availability, or device restrictions. Check Omoi’s current service details before relying on it for a particular series. |
What “free” means on MANGA Plus
MANGA Plus is a useful first stop for Shueisha titles, but its free-reading feature is not an unlimited rereading promise. Under First Read Free, eligible ongoing simulpub titles can be read once in the app. The free read ends when the viewer is closed; rereading generally requires a subscription. Completed series and re-editions are excluded, and some chapters use tickets. Check the rules for the title you want before assuming the full series will remain available without payment. How to choose the right service
- Search the exact series and chapter. A service’s overall size does not guarantee it carries the title, the latest chapter, or the complete back catalog.
- Check your country and language. Availability can be regional; Crunchyroll Manga, for example, is limited to members located in the United States and Canada, and the catalog cited by Crunchyroll is in English.
- Understand the access model. Confirm whether chapters are free, limited to a first read, ticket-based, included with a subscription, or sold as individual volumes.
- Check rereading and offline access. If you want to keep revisiting chapters, look for title-specific rereading rules. VIZ lists offline downloads; verify device and plan requirements in the app.
- Prefer clear authorization. Publisher-operated apps and services that identify licensed publisher content give readers a firmer basis for trusting a title’s authorization. A search result or the presence of a series on a site does not establish rights for every work.
Why there aren’t nine verified alternatives here
The available first-party information supports several services and discovery leads, but it does not validate nine current platforms against the same criteria. Nor does it establish title-by-title authorization for community-upload sites. Rather than label unverified sites “secret” or universally better, use the confirmed options as starting points and check the publisher or an identified licensee for your specific series.
