Measure your complete streaming setup at the wall, then multiply its average power use by the hours it runs and your household’s applicable electricity rate. That gives you a useful estimate of the energy charge; your actual bill also depends on your state, DISCOM, consumer category, tariff slabs, adjustments, duties and any subsidy. To reduce the cost without stopping the stream, first cut work and equipment the stream does not need, then measure again to confirm the stream remains stable and looks right.
Calculate what your 24/7 stream costs to run
Use wall-side energy consumption, not the power supply’s rated capacity or a component’s advertised wattage. For the energy portion of the bill, calculate:
Average power in kW × operating hours × applicable rate in ₹/kWh
For a stream that runs continuously for 30 days, use 720 hours (24 × 30); a 31-day month has 744 hours. These are the hours in those periods, not estimates of how much power a particular PC uses.

Measure the whole setup
- Connect a plug-in electricity usage meter with kWh tracking between the wall outlet and the equipment, if the complete setup uses a suitable plug connection. Check that the meter is rated for the load and is safe for the connection.
- Include the PC and any monitor, capture gear, audio equipment, or other devices powered through the same measurement point. If some equipment uses a separate outlet, measure it separately and add its energy use.
- Run the stream under representative conditions for long enough to capture normal variation. Record the accumulated kWh and the measurement period; divide kWh by hours to find average kW.
- Multiply the measured energy by the relevant marginal energy rate on your bill or current tariff schedule. If you measured kWh directly, use that figure rather than converting from watts.
A meter helps you find consumption; it does not reduce it by itself. A PSU’s rated capacity and a GPU’s TDP are not measurements of what the complete system draws from the wall while your stream is running.
Use your own tariff, not a national-average guess
Indian domestic electricity rates are not one uniform rate. The Ministry of Power states that state electricity regulatory commissions determine retail tariffs and that state governments may provide subsidies to domestic consumers. Check the latest schedule for your state, DISCOM and consumer category, then compare it with your bill. Account for applicable slabs, fuel and power purchase cost adjustments, duties and subsidy. Fixed charges may remain even if you use fewer units, so a reduction in kWh does not necessarily reduce every part of the bill.

The Central Electricity Authority’s Electricity Tariff & Duty and Average rates of electricity supply in India is a 2025 compilation. Its surfaced Bihar domestic schedule is effective from 1 April 2024 and distinguishes rural and urban domestic rates and billing structures. It illustrates why location and category matter; it is neither an India-wide household rate nor a guarantee of the latest rate for a particular bill.
Reduce consumption without sacrificing stream uptime
Make one change at a time. After each change, check the live stream for stability and the picture or audio quality your viewers need, then compare wall-side kWh over a similar operating period. The result depends on the PC, workload and content; no wattage or rupee saving can be assumed in advance.

1. Remove unnecessary work from the PC
If the stream is rendering a game, video or animated scene, test a less demanding scene, frame rate or resolution that still meets your stream’s requirements. A static or simpler visual may use less system power than a demanding animated output, but the effect depends on the hardware and workload. Do not lower quality blindly: verify the result in the stream itself.
2. Compare encoder options by measuring them
Test the hardware encoder available on your PC if it provides the quality and stability you need. Hardware encoding is not guaranteed to lower total wall power: a discrete GPU’s draw, its encoder implementation and the rest of the workload can change the result. Compare whole-system kWh before and after using the same kind of stream content and operating conditions.

3. Switch off equipment the stream does not need
Turn off unused monitors, lights and peripherals. If you need a monitor only to configure or check the stream, test whether you can safely turn it off once the stream is stable. Keep the PC awake and the streaming process running: sleep or hibernation settings that stop the stream defeat the purpose of a 24/7 broadcast.
4. Consider replacing hardware only after measurement
A lower-power PC, GPU or PSU may reduce draw in some configurations, but the outcome depends on the required encoding workload, compatibility and system efficiency. First establish the current setup’s measured consumption and what it must do. Compare any proposed change’s cost with the energy-charge reduction at your applicable marginal rate; do not treat PSU capacity as constant consumption or assume a replacement will pay for itself.

Keep a documentary stream useful as well as economical
For a documentary channel, compare settings using the material viewers actually watch. A lower-load scene or frame rate may be fine for a largely static title card, but could make moving footage look worse. Check motion, text legibility, audio continuity and stream stability after each change. Use the lowest workload that still delivers the viewing experience you intend; there is no single setting that suits every documentary format or PC.

Troubleshoot an estimate or a cost reduction
- The bill is much higher than the calculation: Check that you measured every device, used the full operating period and applied the relevant tariff details. Slabs, adjustments, duties, fixed charges and subsidy can make the bill differ from a simple energy-only calculation.
- The meter shows little or no change after a tweak: Confirm that it measures the whole setup and compare similar stream workloads over comparable periods. A change to one component may not meaningfully alter whole-system use.
- The stream stops after switching off a display: Restore the monitor long enough to check what depended on it, then verify that the PC and stream remain awake and running before trying again. Do not enable sleep or hibernation if it stops the broadcast.
- The stream looks worse after lowering workload: Restore the last acceptable setting and test a smaller change. Judge visual quality and stability in the live output, not only on the local preview.
Sources and scope
The tariff framework and local variation described here are based on the Ministry of Power’s release published 10 August 2026 and the Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 tariff compilation, including the Bihar schedule effective 1 April 2024. Those sources do not establish a representative wattage for a PC streaming YouTube around the clock, a universal Indian household rate, or a measured saving for any specific PC configuration. Measure your setup and use your applicable bill or current local tariff schedule.
