Start with NobelPrize.org’s official list for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Select an award year, open the laureate’s profile, and then follow the links to the Nobel lecture, interview, announcement and ceremony materials. That path gives you the authoritative prize citation and primary documents before you add context from library catalogs, universities or laboratories.
Use the category’s formal name—Physiology or Medicine—when searching. “Nobel laureates in medicine” is understandable shorthand, but the official list, profiles and archives are organized under the longer title.
Why the official Nobel record should come first
A biography can be accurate yet still omit the detail that establishes why a person received the prize. The Nobel record joins the award year, official citation, laureate name and category in one institutional record. It is therefore the best starting point for checking identity and prize-specific facts before reading secondary accounts.
The Nobel Prize guide describes NobelPrize.org as the official site and an online gateway to archival material dating from 1901. Nobel Prize Outreach reported that the site was receiving “well over 35 million visitors a year” in 2008. That figure is historical, not a statement about current traffic.

Find the all-years list
- Open the Nobel Prize website’s list of prizes in physiology or medicine.
- Choose the award year. The year view identifies the laureate or laureates and displays the prize citation.
- Open each person’s linked profile rather than relying on a search-result summary or an unsourced biography.
- Record the citation exactly as presented, including the year and whether the award was shared.
The list is a discovery tool; the individual profile is the person-level record. Keeping both lets you distinguish what the prize organization says about the award from what later writers say about the scientist’s career.
What a Nobel laureate profile can document
An official profile normally provides the core facts needed to anchor a biography: the laureate’s name, award year, citation and links to material produced or preserved by the Nobel organization. Use those elements as a fact-checking spine, then expand outward to institutional and library sources.
Prize citation and award year
Quote or paraphrase the citation with the year attached. A laureate may have a long career, but the citation identifies the contribution recognized by the Nobel Assembly. Do not present a later achievement as the reason for the award unless the citation or another authoritative source supports that connection.
Lectures and interviews
Nobel lectures and interviews are primary materials: they give the laureate’s own account of the research, influences and consequences. They complement a third-person biography rather than replacing it. A lecture may concentrate on a technical discovery, while an interview may reveal training, collaborators or the path to the work.
Announcements, ceremonies and education material
Announcements establish how the prize organization presented the award at the time. Ceremony coverage can document the institutional setting and participants. Educational pages can explain the scientific background for non-specialists. Label each item by type and date in your notes so a later reader can tell a contemporary announcement from a retrospective explanation.
Build a source set instead of relying on one biography
Reliable research usually combines records with different purposes. The table below shows what each source contributes and what it cannot establish on its own.

| Source | Authority and record type | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official Nobel all-years list | Nobel organization; award-year index | Locate every Physiology or Medicine prize and confirm year, category and citation | Not a complete life history |
| Official laureate profile | Nobel organization; person-level profile | Verify identity, prize facts and links to Nobel materials | May not describe every appointment, publication or controversy |
| Nobel lecture or interview | Nobel organization; primary material | Read the laureate’s explanation of the work and career | A first-person account is selective and may use specialist language |
| National Library of Medicine catalog record | Library institution; bibliographic catalog | Identify a Nobel Foundation publication containing press releases, biographies, lectures and interviews | A catalog record does not by itself guarantee current digital access or a particular library’s holdings |
| Linked-data portal | Nobel organization; structured data, specification and OWL ontology | Reuse names, relationships and identifiers in a structured project | Structured fields are not a substitute for reading the underlying documents |
| Official affiliations listing | Nobel organization; institution associations | Find universities, laboratories and other organizations connected with a laureate | An affiliation list is a lead list, not a complete biography |
| University, laboratory or archive record | Relevant institution; local biography or collection record | Confirm appointments, papers, collections and local history | Coverage and terminology vary by institution |
Follow the profile to primary Nobel materials
Once you have opened a profile, use its linked material in a deliberate order. This prevents a compelling interview or educational page from displacing the official record.
1. Read the citation and announcement together
The citation is concise; the announcement supplies the Nobel organization’s contemporaneous explanation. Compare the wording and note any difference between the formal citation and the explanatory narrative. Preserve the publication date of the announcement in your notes.

2. Use the lecture for the scientific account
Read the Nobel lecture when you need the laureate’s description of methods, discoveries and their significance. For a documentary script, separate direct quotations from your narration and retain the lecture title and date so an editor can verify every quotation.
3. Use the interview for personal and career context
Interviews can clarify education, mentors, laboratory decisions and the practical route to a discovery. Treat statements about other people, dates or institutions as claims to verify when they matter to your story; memory is valuable evidence of perspective, not automatically the final historical record.
4. Add educational explanations only after checking the primary record
Educational pages are useful when a discovery is difficult to explain, but they are interpretive. Keep the official citation and primary material as the authority for what was awarded, and use educational text to make the science understandable.
Use library catalogs to locate collected biographies and archives
The U.S. National Library of Medicine catalog describes a Nobel Foundation publication covering all Physiology or Medicine laureates through press releases, biographies, Nobel lectures and interviews. The catalog is valuable because it identifies the publication and its bibliographic record; it does not establish that every reader can currently open the full text online.

A practical catalog workflow
- Search the National Library of Medicine catalog for the publication title or for Nobel Foundation material on Physiology or Medicine laureates.
- Check the author or corporate-author field, publication date, edition and format.
- Read the holdings and access notes. A record may describe a print volume, a digitized item, or a location-specific copy.
- If access matters, confirm the current status with the library or the listed repository rather than assuming that a catalog entry means unrestricted online access.
- Use the volume’s bibliography and index to identify a laureate, then return to the official Nobel profile for the prize citation.
This two-way check is stronger than citing a book title alone: the catalog establishes what the publication is, while the Nobel profile establishes the prize-specific facts.
Use structured Nobel data when you need relationships or repeatable searches
The Nobel linked-data portal links to a specification and an OWL ontology. That makes it useful for projects that need consistent names, identifiers or relationships—for example, compiling every Physiology or Medicine laureate associated with a particular year or institution.
What the portal can clarify
- How a laureate, prize, year and affiliation are represented as linked entities.
- Which fields are intended for machine-readable reuse, according to the specification and ontology.
- How to keep a dataset’s labels consistent when the same person appears in several records.
Use the portal as a structured index, then open the human-readable profile or primary document before making a substantive biographical claim. A data field can point you to a relationship without explaining its historical meaning.
The portal also distinguishes institutional roles. The Nobel Foundation manages Alfred Nobel’s fortune and will, while prize-awarding institutions select laureates independently by category. The Nobel organization states: “For more than a century, these academic institutions have worked independently to select Nobel Laureates in each prize category.” Do not describe the Foundation as the body that independently chooses every laureate.

Treat affiliation lists as leads, not finished biographies
An official affiliations listing can reveal a university, hospital, laboratory or other organization associated with a laureate. Use each entry to locate an institution’s own faculty biography, archive description, oral-history collection or publication record.
Verify the relationship
- Check whether the affiliation refers to the time of the prize, an earlier appointment or a later association.
- Confirm the institution’s name and location in the institution’s own record.
- Do not infer employment, authorship or laboratory leadership from an affiliation alone.
- When dates conflict, preserve both dates in your notes and identify which source supplies each one.
Institutional pages are especially helpful for career context, but they may emphasize local achievements. Keep the Nobel profile as the authority for the award itself.

Handling unusual or disputed historical cases
Ordinary biographies can mislead when a prize intersects with an unusual event. For such cases, use the Nobel Prize organization’s explanatory material rather than repeating a simplified secondary account.
The 2011 Ralph Steinman case
The Nobel Prize facts material explains why the 2011 award remained in place after the Nobel Assembly learned that Ralph Steinman had died. This is the appropriate source for describing the decision and its timing. Present the case as an exception explained by the Nobel organization, not as evidence that the normal selection process permits posthumous awards without qualification.
How to document a disputed point
- Write down the exact claim and the date on which the relevant institution made it.
- Check the official Nobel explanation and the laureate profile.
- Look for a contemporaneous announcement or institutional record that adds context.
- State what is established and what remains uncertain; do not resolve a historical dispute by guessing.
A repeatable research and citation workflow
The following sequence works for a documentary biography, a classroom project or a fact-checked article.
- Define the subject. Record the laureate’s full name, the formal category “Physiology or Medicine” and the award year.
- Capture the official record. Save the all-years list entry, profile, citation and the date you accessed them.
- Collect primary material. Add the lecture, interview, announcement and ceremony coverage linked from the profile.
- Locate the collected publication. Use the National Library of Medicine catalog to identify the Nobel Foundation volume and check access or holdings notes.
- Map affiliations. Use the official affiliations list to find institutions, then verify dates and roles in institutional records.
- Use structured data selectively. Consult the linked-data specification or ontology when you need repeatable identifiers or relationship searches.
- Cross-check every major claim. A prize reason comes from the Nobel record; a career date may come from an institutional or library record; a personal recollection is attributed to the interview.
- Preserve provenance. Keep the page title, issuing organization, publication date, access date and exact quotation in your notes.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Searching only for “medicine”
Searches using only the shorthand can miss records indexed under the formal category. Add “Physiology or Medicine” and the award year.
Using a search snippet as a citation
Snippets can truncate names, dates or citations. Open the profile or catalog record and cite the underlying page.
Calling an affiliation a biography
An institution name does not establish a complete career timeline. Use it to find a primary institutional record, then verify the appointment and dates.

Assuming a catalog entry means full online access
Catalog records identify publications and holdings; access can depend on format, location and current library policy. Check the record’s access notes.
Confusing the Nobel Foundation with the selecting institutions
The Foundation’s financial and administrative role is distinct from the independent category-by-category selection performed by academic institutions.
Repeating a historical traffic figure as current
“Well over 35 million visitors a year” belongs to Nobel Prize Outreach’s 2008 guide. It should remain explicitly dated and should not be used as a current audience statistic.
What to do when a page is unavailable
Web access can vary by location, browser, institutional network or later site changes. If an official page does not open, record the title and issuing organization shown in an indexed result, then look for the same material through the site’s navigation, a library catalog or an institutional archive. Do not fill a missing citation with an unattributed summary.
