Where to Find More Documentaries About Faith and Climate Change

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want documentaries connecting religious belief with climate action, start with PBS’s four-part Sacred Planet with Gulnaz Khan, Tearfund’s nine-part Christian series Christianity and Climate Change, Blessed Tomorrow’s group-ready Faith + Climate Film Series, or CTVC’s short classroom films. Add RENEWAL for a feature-length portrait of religious environmental activists, Islands of Faith for an Indonesian perspective, and Georgia Public Broadcasting’s short NOVA extra for a concise discussion of faith and climate science. The best choice depends on the traditions you want represented, the time available, and whether you need discussion or worship materials.

At a glance: seven useful starting points

Title Format and length Faith perspective Where to start Group materials
Sacred Planet with Gulnaz Khan Four-part documentary series Multiple traditions linked to sacred places PBS.org and the PBS app; local broadcast availability varies Not stated in the PBS description
Christianity and Climate Change Nine short films Christian Tearfund’s online series page Discussion questions and suggested actions
Faith + Climate Film Series Several films, including “Tend and Keep,” “Called By Faith” and “Seeds of Fire” Several faith traditions Free sign-up through Blessed Tomorrow Discussion guide, sermon and worship kit, facilitation and promotional materials
CTVC / TrueTube Climate Change films Short films for classroom use Includes Judaism, Buddhism and multifaith cooperation TrueTube, as identified by CTVC Classroom orientation; additional materials not stated
RENEWAL 90-minute feature documentary; DVD includes the full film and individual stories Religious environmental activists Renewal Project; confirm current copies and screening terms Designed for theatrical, community and broadcast screenings
Islands of Faith 2018 feature documentary Faith and culture in seven Indonesian provinces Netflix listing; availability is territory-specific Not stated
“Faith and Climate Change” Short NOVA episode extra Evangelical perspective and climate science Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) Not stated

Descriptions and availability above reflect the publishers’ listings. Streaming catalogs, broadcast schedules, sign-up processes and screening permissions can change, so verify the current listing before announcing a showing.

PBS: Sacred Planet with Gulnaz Khan

PBS presents Sacred Planet with Gulnaz Khan as a four-part series about climate impacts on sacred places. The host meets faith leaders whose responses draw on traditional knowledge and spiritual resilience, making this a strong option when you want climate stories rooted in landscape, heritage and lived religion rather than a general environmental overview.

The four episodes

  • “Reclaiming Peru’s Glaciers” connects a rapidly changing mountain environment with the people who regard it as sacred.
  • “Saving the World’s Forests” examines forest protection through spiritual and community perspectives.
  • “Stopping the Desert” focuses on efforts to respond to land degradation and expanding arid conditions.
  • “The Heart of the World” completes the series’ exploration of sacred places and climate pressure.

PBS says the series streams on PBS.org and the PBS app. Local broadcast availability is separate from the online listing, so check your station’s schedule if you prefer television. Because the episodes are organized around places and people, the series works well for a congregation or class that wants to discuss how environmental change affects cultural identity and sacred practice.

Tearfund: Christianity and Climate Change

Tearfund’s nine-film series is the most structured choice for a Christian audience. Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe answers questions from church leaders and members, with episodes addressing biblical perspectives on nature, the relationship between climate and poverty, practical church action, conversations among Christians, fossil fuels and related concerns.

Why it suits a church study

  • The nine-part structure allows a weekly discussion or a shorter intensive course.
  • Questions supplied by church participants keep the focus on concerns congregations actually raise.
  • Tearfund provides discussion questions and further actions, so a leader does not have to create a study guide from scratch.

The series page says it was recorded and produced in 2020. That date matters: the theological framing and core climate explanations remain useful, but examples of policy, technology or church initiatives may have changed. Treat the films as a guided conversation starter and check any current local claims separately before using them to make a present-day policy case.

Blessed Tomorrow: Faith + Climate Film Series

Blessed Tomorrow’s series is designed for organized group use. Its films feature people from several faith traditions, and the organization’s sign-up offers a discussion guide, sermon and worship kit, facilitation materials and promotional resources alongside the films. Named titles include Tend and Keep, Called By Faith and Seeds of Fire.

When this is the practical choice

Choose this collection when the screening is part of a service, interfaith event, study circle or public program that needs more than a video link. The worship kit can help a congregation connect the screening with a service, while facilitation and promotional resources reduce the work of recruiting participants and guiding discussion.

Ask the rights holder about recording, livestreaming, ticketing and repeat-showing rules before you publish an event notice.

CTVC and TrueTube: short classroom films

CTVC describes a set of short Climate Change films made for classroom use, with TrueTube identified as the broadcaster. The collection includes films dealing with Judaism, Buddhism and multifaith cooperation, giving teachers a way to move beyond a single Christian frame without requiring a feature-length class period.

How to use them in teaching

  • Use one short film as an opening case study, then ask students to identify the religious values, community responsibilities and climate responses presented.
  • Pair films from different traditions and compare what each treats as a source of authority: scripture, ritual, community practice, local knowledge or cooperation.
  • Reserve time to distinguish a film’s explanation of a tradition from the views of every member of that tradition.

CTVC’s description establishes classroom intent and the traditions represented, but it does not state a standard lesson plan or a single duration for every film. Check the individual TrueTube page for the running time and any age guidance before building a timetable.

RENEWAL: a feature-length portrait of religious environmental activism

The Renewal Project describes RENEWAL as a 90-minute documentary about religious environmental activists. Its DVD menu allows viewers to watch the complete film or individual stories, and the project presents it for theatrical, community and broadcast screenings.

The feature format gives a group room to follow people and movements over time rather than moving quickly between examples. It is therefore a good centerpiece for an evening program, retreat or public conversation. The chapter-style DVD option can also help a facilitator select one story for a shorter session, but the page does not establish that every chapter may be screened independently under the same terms as the full film.

Confirm current DVD availability, public-performance rights, copying rules and any required screening fee directly with the Renewal Project. A physical disc is not automatically a license to show the film to a public audience, livestream it or upload excerpts.

Islands of Faith: an Indonesian perspective

Netflix describes the 2018 documentary Islands of Faith as following people in seven Indonesian provinces who address climate change through faith and culture. It is the clearest choice in this list for viewers seeking a locally specific Southeast Asian perspective rather than a program centered on North American or European institutions.

Netflix’s listing reports that the title is not available in the viewer’s country. That message is territory-specific, not proof that the documentary has been removed everywhere. Search the title while signed in from the country where the screening will occur, and do not promise access to an international audience until each participant can confirm it.

Georgia Public Broadcasting’s NOVA extra

Georgia Public Broadcasting lists “Faith and Climate Change” as a short NOVA episode extra that premiered on March 9, 2018. It features evangelical meteorologist Paul Douglas discussing faith and climate science. The short running time makes it useful as a meeting opener, a discussion prompt or a contrast with films that focus on sacred landscapes and activism.

Because it is an episode extra rather than a full documentary, it cannot supply the historical, cultural or regional range of the longer works above. Use it to launch questions about how scientific evidence and religious conviction can be discussed together, then move to a longer film if the group needs more context.

Choose by the question your audience is asking

“How are sacred places being affected?”

Begin with Sacred Planet. Its episode structure keeps physical landscapes and the people who regard them as sacred at the center.

“How can a Christian congregation talk and act on climate change?”

Use Tearfund’s series. The nine films, discussion questions and action prompts are built around church conversations, including difficult subjects such as fossil fuels and poverty.

“How do we run an interfaith event with ready-made materials?”

Request the Blessed Tomorrow collection. Its named films and accompanying worship, facilitation and promotional resources are designed for organized gatherings.

“What can fit into one class period?”

Look at the CTVC/TrueTube shorts or GPB’s NOVA extra. Confirm the exact running time and classroom or online access before assigning them.

“We want a full evening focused on activists.”

Choose RENEWAL and plan for its 90-minute runtime, followed by a discussion that addresses both religious motivation and practical organizing.

“We need a non-U.S. regional perspective.”

Check Islands of Faith first, then verify that the Netflix listing is available in the country where people will watch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reliable way to verify access before you schedule a screening

  1. Identify the viewing country. Streaming rights and broadcast schedules can differ by territory, and a title available to one participant may be unavailable to another.
  2. Open the current host listing. Check PBS or the PBS app for Sacred Planet, Tearfund for its nine-film page, Blessed Tomorrow for sign-up terms, TrueTube for individual CTVC films, the Renewal Project for RENEWAL, Netflix for Islands of Faith and GPB for the NOVA extra.
  3. Record the exact format. Note whether you have a stream, downloadable file, DVD, classroom clip or broadcast replay. A page that offers personal viewing does not necessarily grant public-performance rights.
  4. Ask about permissions. For a congregation, school, library or public event, confirm whether group viewing, ticketing, livestreaming, recording and repeat showings are allowed.
  5. Test the route on the actual equipment. Verify captions, sound, internet bandwidth, app compatibility and whether sign-in is required. Keep a discussion plan that can proceed if a stream fails.

Build a discussion program without repeating the same film

A balanced program can move from place, to theology, to action. Open with the GPB NOVA extra to surface assumptions about faith and climate science. Follow with one Sacred Planet episode to ground the conversation in a sacred landscape. Use a Tearfund film or a Blessed Tomorrow selection to examine congregational responsibility, then assign a CTVC short from another tradition so participants can compare approaches. Reserve RENEWAL for a longer closing session when the group is ready to discuss organizing and leadership.

Keep the questions distinct: ask what is changing in the place shown; what religious claims or practices shape the response; who is affected economically or socially; what action is proposed; and what evidence the film leaves unexplored. This prevents a screening from becoming a general conversation about whether climate change exists and keeps attention on the faith communities and people portrayed.

Important limits to keep in mind

  • No single title represents every religion or every climate position. The CTVC films, Blessed Tomorrow collection and Islands of Faith broaden the range beyond a Christian-only program.
  • The 2020 production date of Tearfund’s series and the 2018 dates of Islands of Faith and the GPB extra should be stated when presenting them as current resources.
  • Availability is not the same as permission. Confirm rights with the host or rights holder for any organized screening.
  • Publisher descriptions establish the subjects and intended uses listed here; they do not establish a universal running time, age rating, translation, caption track or geographic license for every item.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
