Where to Find Educational Resources About October 7 and Antisemitism: A 2026 Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a classroom-ready starting point, use the Jewish Educator Portal’s ADL-attributed guide Educator Guidance on Antisemitism and Israel/Hamas War (grades 8–12). Pair it with United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) lessons for historical context and primary-source work. ADL’s broader classroom collection supports teacher learning and student activities, while the Jewish Educator Portal’s guides by the Jewish People Policy Institute and Professor Gil Troy address recurring questions about October 7 and its aftermath. New York State’s Anti-Hate in Education Center is a useful directory, but its curriculum requirements apply only in New York.

Choose the resource by the job you need it to do

“October 7 and antisemitism” is not one lesson topic. An educator responding to an antisemitic incident needs a different tool from a teacher introducing the history of antisemitism, and both need something different from a commemoration activity about the October 7, 2023 attacks. Start by naming the immediate instructional or pastoral task.

Need Best-matched starting point What it provides
Facilitate a current-events discussion or respond to an incident Jewish Educator Portal, Educator Guidance on Antisemitism and Israel/Hamas War Grades 8–12 discussion guidance, further learning resources, and a one-day lesson for when an antisemitic incident occurs
Explain October 7, Hamas, the conflict and regional actors The Essential Guide to October 7th and Its Aftermath A print-oriented guide developed by the Jewish People Policy Institute and historian and author Professor Gil Troy
Teach historical antisemitism and the Holocaust USHMM teaching materials; ADL and Echoes & Reflections units Contextualized lessons, primary sources, testimony, timelines and source-analysis activities
Prepare staff or build a schoolwide program ADL’s Incorporate Antisemitism and Holocaust Education into Your Classroom collection Educator learning, student activities, professional learning and optional family or literature materials
Find a broad P–12 and higher-education directory New York State Anti-Hate in Education Center guide Links to curriculum, professional development, civil-discourse and incident-response resources; New York-specific policy context

These resources do not have a common effectiveness measure. Compare their audience, purpose, length, format, source base, producer and geography instead of treating one as a universal curriculum.

Resources for October 7 and classroom conversations

Jewish Educator Portal: Educator Guidance on Antisemitism and Israel/Hamas War

The Jewish Educator Portal identifies this guide as an Anti-Defamation League (ADL) resource for grades 8–12. It is the closest match for a teacher who must facilitate discussion about the October 7 attacks, the Israel–Hamas war and antisemitism in a school setting. The guide is designed to help educators conduct classroom dialogue, points to additional learning materials and includes a one-day lesson for teaching what to do when an antisemitic incident occurs.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Its framing connects the October 7 attacks with a subsequent rise in antisemitism and the need to recognize and challenge antisemitism. Use that framing to establish a learning aim, not as a substitute for presenting evidence about a particular incident. Before class, identify which claims are documented facts, which are interpretations and which are students’ or communities’ experiences. The guide’s stated grade band is 8–12; adapt language and activities for younger students only after checking developmental appropriateness.

The Essential Guide to October 7th and Its Aftermath

The Jewish Educator Portal lists this print-ready PDF as developed by the Jewish People Policy Institute and Professor Gil Troy. It is intended to answer recurring questions about Hamas, how Hamas became the governing power in Gaza, the history of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, regional actors and life in Israel.

Treat it as an authored interpretive guide. It can help teachers organize background reading and anticipate students’ questions, but it is not a primary-source archive. Pair explanations with contemporaneous documents, testimony or other clearly identified evidence when students are asked to investigate what happened or how historians know it.

October 7 Anniversary Resources from the Jewish Educator Portal and Unpacked for Educators

This collection is tagged for grades 8–12 and is framed around difficult classroom conversations and the first anniversary of October 7, 2023. Anniversary materials can be valuable for remembrance, reflection and structured dialogue, but their date-specific framing may not fit a later lesson without adjustment. Check the collection itself for current updates, changed links and the intended commemorative context before assigning an activity.

ADL: Israel in the Curriculum

ADL’s Israel in the Curriculum page offers two complementary tools: a parent and caregiver advocacy toolkit and an educator assessment tool. The assessment is intended to help schools examine whether learning about Israel is accurate, appropriate, compassionate and safe for students of all identities. The page was updated September 24, 2026.

Use the assessment before adopting any lesson, including a lesson found through another organization. Ask whether the activity distinguishes Israel, Israelis, Palestinians, Hamas and Jewish, Muslim and Arab identities; whether it explains the learning objective; and whether students can disagree without being targeted. ADL says it tracks antisemitic incidents through an annual audit, but the page does not establish an outcome comparison among the teaching programs listed here.

Resources for historical antisemitism and Holocaust instruction

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum teaching materials

USHMM’s Teaching Materials on the Holocaust are designed for middle- and high-school students. The lessons are grounded in historical context and use primary sources from the museum’s collections. The menu includes a one-day introduction, a two- or four-day overview, a timeline activity, survivor testimony and a lesson on the history of antisemitism and its role in the Holocaust.

USHMM also provides a rubric for evaluating books and other classroom resources, a rationale and objectives guide, age-appropriateness guidance and learning modifications. Use those supports before selecting a text or video. The listed “Path to Nazi Genocide” documentary runs 38 minutes; that is a running time, not evidence of learning outcomes. Plan time for preparation, viewing, source analysis and debriefing rather than treating the film as a complete lesson.

ADL: Incorporate Antisemitism and Holocaust Education into Your Classroom

ADL’s collection is broader than a single lesson. It includes a unit on historical antisemitism, a unit on antisemitism after the Holocaust, student learning activities, professional learning and a resource kit. Depending on the item, a kit may include educator background, guided lessons, student materials, family resources and suggested children’s or young-adult literature.

The collection also describes free asynchronous educator courses and a 20-minute mini-lesson for K–12 educators, staff and district leaders. The mini-lesson can work as a staff-meeting introduction; it should not be mistaken for full preparation to teach the Holocaust or to manage a live incident. Follow it with the longer subject-specific materials and your school’s safeguarding and reporting procedures.

Echoes & Reflections: Studying the Holocaust

ADL’s Echoes & Reflections lesson page describes a free middle- and high-school unit. It asks students to evaluate primary and secondary sources, learn about prewar Jewish life and its diversity, and reflect on survivor and witness testimony. The page lists publication on September 2, 2020, and an update on August 22, 2024.

That source-analysis emphasis makes the unit a useful bridge between historical study and media literacy. Have students label each item as primary or secondary, identify who created it and when, and record what the source can and cannot establish. Testimony should be treated as evidence of a person’s experience, with context and corroboration, rather than as a prompt for students to rank whose suffering is more legitimate.

A New York directory with national limits

Anti-Hate in Education Center: Educational Resources for P–12 and Higher Education

New York State’s Anti-Hate in Education Center guide gathers primary and secondary sources, Holocaust and antisemitism materials, professional development, and campus resources for civil discourse and incident response. It is useful when an administrator needs a starting directory rather than one lesson.

Read its policy statements geographically. The guide says New York’s social studies framework explicitly covers Holocaust instruction in grades 8, 10 and 11. Those grade references describe New York’s framework; they are not a nationwide requirement. Schools elsewhere should check their own state standards, board policies and reporting rules before adopting the sequence.

Build a lesson or professional-learning sequence

  1. Define the outcome. Decide whether students should analyze historical evidence, understand a current event, practice civil discourse, recognize antisemitic patterns or know how to report an incident. Write one observable objective.
  2. Set the scope. State the dates, places and groups under discussion. Do not let “October 7” silently expand into an unbounded survey of the entire conflict.
  3. Select a lead resource. Use the grades 8–12 ADL-attributed guide for a facilitated current-events conversation; use USHMM, ADL or Echoes & Reflections for historical grounding; use the JPPI/Gil Troy guide for background questions; use the New York directory to locate additional institutional resources.
  4. Audit the source base. Mark primary sources, secondary interpretations, testimony, videos and advocacy materials. Explain each role to students. A named institutional producer does not make every claim a primary source.
  5. Plan the opening. Establish discussion agreements, define how students can pass, and explain how to report harassment privately. Avoid asking students to represent a religion, nationality or political position.
  6. Teach before debating. Give students the historical and vocabulary context needed to evaluate evidence. A discussion in which students are asked to improvise facts about Hamas, Israel, Palestinians or antisemitism is not a source-based lesson.
  7. Use structured analysis. Ask who created a source, when, for what audience, what it says, what it omits and what corroboration is needed. Keep analysis of an action or ideology separate from assumptions about an entire people.
  8. Close with a product. Students might write a source-based explanation, identify a claim that needs verification, or propose a safe response to an incident. Do not grade students on adopting a political conclusion.
  9. Review and document. Record which materials were used, what questions arose and which safeguarding or reporting steps were triggered. Update anniversary-specific or rapidly changing current-event materials before the next use.

How to make the discussion safer and more precise

  • Name the identities in the room. Jewish, Muslim, Arab, Israeli, Palestinian and other students may experience the topic personally. No student should be required to disclose identity or family experience.
  • Separate criticism from targeting. Students may examine governments, armed groups, policies and historical decisions. Slurs, conspiracy claims about Jews, collective blame of Palestinians or Muslims, and threats toward classmates are not protected “debate points.”
  • Use content notes proportionately. Lessons involving murder, hostage-taking, sexual violence, displacement or survivor testimony need advance notice and an alternative way to participate.
  • Keep a reporting route visible. Tell students whom to contact, how confidentiality works and what the school must report. A discussion guide cannot replace the school’s safeguarding, discrimination or emergency procedures.
  • Invite families without outsourcing the lesson. Share the learning objective, grade level, major content warnings and selected materials. Provide a contact for questions; do not ask families to settle historical or political disputes through the classroom.

Common mistakes and practical fixes

Using one guide for every age

A grades 8–12 discussion guide is not automatically suitable for elementary students, and a Holocaust testimony lesson may be too intense for a short current-events period. Match reading level, emotional content and expected prior knowledge; use USHMM’s age-appropriateness and modification supports.

Presenting an anniversary collection as timeless background

Anniversary resources are tied to the first anniversary of October 7, 2023. Preserve the commemorative purpose, but verify dates, links and context before using them in a later year.

Confusing an advocacy tool with a neutral archive

ADL materials are produced by an advocacy organization; the JPPI/Gil Troy item is an authored guide; USHMM materials come from a museum; New York’s directory comes from a state education center. Tell students who produced each item and why that matters for reading it critically.

Turning a traumatic event into a debate prompt

Begin with safety, evidence and clear terms. Do not require students to argue an assigned side or disclose personal experiences. If an antisemitic incident occurs, move from discussion to the school’s reporting and support process and use the one-day response lesson as instructional support.

Assuming availability or outcomes will remain unchanged

Resource pages, linked files and guidance can change. Check the live page immediately before teaching. The available descriptions specify formats and audiences, but they do not provide a common study proving that one collection is more effective than another.

Costs, access and supplemental materials

The central recommendations are digital guides, lessons, collections and educator learning; the listed sources do not require a paid purchase for access to those core materials. Books about antisemitism for educators can be an optional supplement. If you add one, use USHMM’s resource-evaluation rubric and ADL’s suggested-literature categories rather than selecting a title solely because it is popular or readily available. No specific book price or availability is established here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For administrators and higher-education staff

Administrators can use the New York directory’s civil-discourse and incident-response categories as a checklist even outside New York, while substituting their own state and campus policies. Combine a short staff orientation, a written reporting route, age-appropriate classroom materials and a process for notifying families. Higher-education instructors should distinguish the P–12 grade labels from college-level resources and should not import New York’s K–12 framework statements as institutional requirements elsewhere.

Final selection checklist

  • Is the resource matched to the students’ grade, reading level and emotional readiness?
  • Does it state whether it is a lesson, authored guide, museum collection, testimony, professional-learning course or directory?
  • Are dates, geography and political actors clearly bounded?
  • Can students inspect primary material or a transparent account of the source base?
  • Have you explained the producer’s role and perspective?
  • Is there a plan for harassment, distress, disclosure or an actual antisemitic incident?
  • Have you checked the page for current links, updates and anniversary-specific framing?
