Where is The Traitors filmed?
The central filming location for the U.K. and U.S. editions is Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands, north of Inverness. Screen Scotland identifies Ardross Castle as a location for the U.K. Series 2 production, while Screen Highland describes filming at the castle and in the wider Highland region. Screen Scotland and Screen Highland confirm the location.

The castle is not merely a backdrop: producers say it is central to the show’s identity. Executive producer Rosie Franks told the Los Angeles Times, “The castle has contributed so much to the identity of the show. We’d struggle to make the same show without it.”
Are the challenges filmed at the castle?
Many outdoor challenges take place on the estate, with others filmed nearby. Executive producer Mike Cotton told the Los Angeles Times that about 90% of outdoor challenges are filmed on site and the remaining 10% at a nearby loch. He described the Ardross Castle estate as 2,000 acres. These are production figures reported in the 2025 interview, not independently audited measurements.

The production uses parts of the building rather than every room. The Los Angeles Times reported that the crew films in multiple rooms and much of the downstairs, and that about 50 cameras are in the castle. The producers also said they considered more than 40 castles before selecting Ardross. Cotton said the location’s sense of isolation helps create the show’s world.
Do contestants sleep in Ardross Castle?
There is no definitive public account from the producers of exactly where contestants sleep. In the 2025 Los Angeles Times interview, Franks said that keeping behind-the-scenes details secret helps preserve the game’s integrity. Cotton added: “As soon as we start to talk about exactly where they sleep and how it works, we’re really worried that might unpick it all.”

Some reporting indicates that contestants stay away from the castle, but the accounts are specific to particular editions and sources:
- U.S. edition: A Television Academy feature describes the cast as staying at a hotel.
- U.K. edition: The Independent reports that contestants lodge near Inverness Airport.
These reports support the view that contestants do not simply sleep in the castle, but they do not establish one official arrangement for every version or season. The producers’ stated position is that they will not disclose the full logistics.

Why does the show make it look as if everyone stays there?
The castle is the setting for much of the on-screen story, but what viewers see does not prove where contestants spend the night. The show frames the castle as the Traitors’ home and uses its rooms and grounds for scenes; production sources say the building is only part of the filming setup. Producers have also described moving Traitors for turret filming without revealing their identities. Host Alan Cumming has explained the castle premise as a narrative he created for himself: he decided it should be “my” castle and that he lived there. That is the show’s performance framing, not evidence of contestants’ sleeping arrangements.

Peacock describes Ardross Castle as a wedding venue, but the available source does not establish that the castle offers public tours or overnight accommodation. Do not assume that its role as a filming location makes it open to visitors or bookable as a place to stay.
