What happened to her appeal?
On September 3, 2026, Florida’s Fifth District Court of Appeal issued an opinion marked “AFFIRMED,” upholding the judgment on appeal. The court’s opinion also states: “Not final until disposition of any timely and authorized motion under Fla. R. App. P. 9.330 or 9.331.” The ruling therefore should not be described as exhausting every possible avenue of review. Read the appellate opinion.

Why is Susan Lorincz in prison?
On June 2, 2023, Lorincz shot and killed her neighbor Ajike “A.J.” Owens through the closed front door of Lorincz’s home in Ocala, Florida. The shooting followed a long-running dispute involving Owens’s children playing near the homes. Lorincz claimed self-defense; a jury found her guilty of manslaughter in August 2024.
On November 25, 2024, Marion County Circuit Judge Robert W. Hodges sentenced Lorincz to 25 years in prison. At sentencing, Hodges said, “The shooting was completely unnecessary in this case,” and that it was “based more in anger than in fear,” according to the Associated Press. Is there also a civil case?
WFTV reported on November 3, 2025, that Owens’s mother had filed a wrongful-death lawsuit on behalf of Owens’s estate. The station also reported that Lorincz had threatened a countersuit in a handwritten court letter, but had not officially filed one at that time. That report does not establish the lawsuit’s later status or whether a countersuit was subsequently filed. Read WFTV’s report.
