The best-known Monkeemobile sold at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale auction in 2008 and is reported to have gone to a private collector in southeastern Michigan. That is a historical location report, not confirmation of where the car is today. The available sources do not verify the current location or public display of either of the two original Monkeemobiles.

Why there is more than one answer

Two original Monkeemobiles were built for The Monkees television series from 1966 Pontiac GTOs. The cars followed different paths, so a reference to “the Monkeemobile” may mean either one.

Barrett-Jackson’s record describes the car it sold as a 1966 Pontiac GTO custom originally designed by Dean Jeffries and later re-kustomized by George Barris. A separate historical account traces another original through a different chain of custody. Neither source confirms where either car is now.

The car sold at Barrett-Jackson

Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale 2008 docket lists the GTO Monkeemobile as Lot 1297 and marks it sold. The auction house’s retrospective reports a sale price of $396,000 including buyer commission. Its public lot record does not identify the current owner or location. Barrett-Jackson lot record · Barrett-Jackson retrospective

A historical account says this car went to a private collector in southeastern Michigan after the auction. That report does not establish that the car remains there today, and it does not indicate that the car is open to visitors. The Monkees Home Page historical account

The other original car

The same historical account says the second original was left in Australia during the group’s 1968 tour, later surfaced in Puerto Rico, and was sold at a government auction in 1992. It associates this car with a private collector in northern New Jersey. That is a reported historical whereabouts, not a verified current address or display location. Can you see one in a museum or at a public event?

The available records do not establish that either original is currently on public display, and they do not confirm visitor access. A reported private-collection location is not enough to plan a visit. Check with an institution or event organizer for current confirmation before traveling.

What about Monkeemobile model kits?

The historical account says MPC received rights to market a Monkeemobile model kit and reports that more than 7 million kits sold, citing Pontiac Enthusiast Magazine in 1997. That figure describes historical kit sales; it does not show that a particular kit is currently available or that a present-day product is made by MPC. The Monkees Home Page historical account
