The real Home Alone house is at 671 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka, Illinois, a North Shore suburb north of Chicago. It is a private residence, not a museum or public attraction. Visitors can recognize the famous red-brick exterior from public areas where legally permitted, but they cannot tour the house or enter the property.
There is also an important filming detail: the exterior—and a few limited interior areas—came from the real house, while most of the familiar interiors were rebuilt as film sets.
The exact address of the Home Alone house
The McCallister home seen in the 1990 film Home Alone is located at:
- 671 Lincoln Avenue
- Winnetka, Illinois 60093
- Chicago metropolitan area, North Shore suburbs
Winnetka is not Chicago proper, although it is part of the greater Chicago area and is commonly included in Chicago filming-location guides. The movie refers to the street as “Lincoln Boulevard” in places, but the current street address and local-history records identify it as Lincoln Avenue.

The property is a large red-brick Georgian or Georgian Revival-style single-family house built in 1921. The Winnetka Historical Society identifies 671 Lincoln Avenue as the location associated with the McCallister home, and the Village of Winnetka’s landmark-preservation materials also identify the property as the Home Alone house.
Was the entire movie house filmed there?
No. The recognizable exterior is real, but the movie’s interior geography is not a faithful walk-through of the residence.
Most interior scenes were filmed on constructed sets. Production records identify the West Campus gym of New Trier Township High School in nearby Northfield as the place where the interior sets were built. The large gym gave the production team enough room to construct and light the rooms needed for the slapstick traps, chase scenes, and Christmas-night action.
A small number of interior-looking shots did use portions of the actual property, including the main staircase, attic, and much of the first-floor landing. The safest way to describe the result is this: the exterior and selected limited interior areas were filmed at 671 Lincoln Avenue, while most of the interiors viewers remember were recreated on sets.
Why the movie house feels larger than a normal home
The apparent size and layout of the McCallister residence are partly a filmmaking illusion. Because the rooms were built as sets, the production could design spaces for camera movement, stunt choreography, lighting, and visual jokes rather than follow the constraints of an existing floor plan.
That is why a viewer should not expect the real house to contain every room, hallway, basement passage, or trap sequence exactly as shown on screen. The set and the real residence served different purposes: the house supplied the instantly recognizable exterior, while the gym-based sets supplied the practical working space for the interiors.
Can you visit the Home Alone house?
You can see the house from public areas where local rules allow, but you cannot go inside. It remains a private residence and is not operated as an official Home Alone museum, regular tour stop, or open house.

If you visit the neighborhood, treat it like any other residential street:
- Remain on public property and do not cross fences, gates, or property lines.
- Do not touch the gate or fixtures.
- Do not knock on the door, ask residents for a tour, or attempt to identify or contact the owners.
- Do not block the street, driveway, sidewalk, or neighboring homes.
- Keep photography discreet and obey posted signs and local instructions.
- Check current local conditions before traveling, since access arrangements and construction activity can change.
Recent visitor reports and local coverage have indicated renovation activity, but that is not the same as an official public-access announcement. Do not plan a trip on the assumption that the property will be open or that a particular viewing position will be available.
Who owns the house now?
The property reportedly sold for approximately $5.5 million in January 2025, after being listed at $5.25 million in 2024. Realtor.com records the 2025 sale and currently lists the property as off market.
The sale is useful context for understanding the house’s current status, but the private owners’ identities should not be speculated about or published without authoritative public confirmation. Ownership does not change the basic visitor rule: this is a private home, not a public attraction.
Other Home Alone filming locations near Chicago
The McCallister house is only one of several Chicago-area locations associated with the film. These places should not be confused with 671 Lincoln Avenue:
- Former Hubbard Woods Pharmacy: 940 Green Bay Road in Winnetka.
- Hubbard Woods Metra station: another Winnetka-area location connected with the production.
- Trinity United Methodist Church: in Wilmette, used for church exteriors.
- Grace Episcopal Church: in Oak Park, used for church interiors.
Because some businesses and properties change use over time, a filming-location itinerary should verify current access and operating status for each separate location. A location appearing in the movie does not necessarily mean it is open to visitors today.

The address is most rewarding when viewed alongside the film itself. Rewatching the movie makes the distinction between the real exterior and the constructed interiors easier to spot, especially during the staircase, attic, and landing scenes. If you prefer physical media, you can look for the Home Alone DVD before your trip; confirm the current edition, region, availability, and seller details at the time of purchase.
For travelers interested in more than one location, a broader Chicago movie-locations itinerary may be worthwhile. However, no specific current tour operator or approved affiliate service has been verified here, so visitors should independently check the operator, route, access arrangements, and current reviews before booking.
