As of August 12, 2026, Sally Struthers is the only surviving member of the original four-person core cast of All in the Family. Struthers played Gloria Stivic, while Carroll O’Connor, Jean Stapleton, and Rob Reiner played Archie Bunker, Edith Bunker, and Michael “Meathead” Stivic. O’Connor, Stapleton, and Reiner have died, but each left a substantial body of work beyond the landmark sitcom.
The series’ later cast also included Danielle Brisebois as Stephanie Mills, whose career took an especially notable turn from child acting to songwriting and music production.
The original All in the Family cast at a glance

|---|---|---|---|
| Carroll O’Connor | Archie Bunker | Died June 21, 2001, aged 76 | Archie Bunker’s Place; In the Heat of the Night |
| Jean Stapleton | Edith Bunker | Died May 31, 2013, aged 90 | Stage, television movies, and character acting |

| Sally Struthers | Gloria Stivic | Living; turned 79 on July 28, 2026 | Acting, theater, television, and voice work |
This table refers to the original central quartet, not every performer who appeared in the show or its continuation. “The only surviving cast member” is therefore too broad; Struthers is the only surviving member of the original four-person core cast.
Carroll O’Connor as Archie Bunker
Carroll O’Connor died on June 21, 2001, at age 76. His portrayal of Archie Bunker made him one of the most recognizable television performers of his era, but his career did not end when All in the Family ended.

O’Connor continued playing Archie in the spin-off and continuation series Archie Bunker’s Place. That gave the character a second television life rather than treating Archie as a role he simply left behind. O’Connor then made a major change in direction as Police Chief Bill Gillespie in In the Heat of the Night. The role brought him another Emmy and demonstrated that his range extended well beyond the irascible Queens patriarch.
His later public life also included advocacy related to the death of his son, Hugh O’Connor. That part of his story matters because O’Connor’s life after the sitcom was not limited to repeating his most famous character or revisiting his television success.
Jean Stapleton as Edith Bunker
Jean Stapleton died of natural causes on May 31, 2013, at age 90. Her performance as Edith Bunker could be comic, tender, and emotionally perceptive, making Edith far more than a supporting spouse in Archie’s story.
Stapleton had a substantial theatrical background before All in the Family. Her Broadway credits included Damn Yankees, The Bells Are Ringing, and Funny Girl. After the sitcom, she continued working in television movies and other screen roles while maintaining the reputation of a respected stage and character actress.
The contrast between Edith’s apparent simplicity and Stapleton’s craft was central to the character’s lasting impact. In retrospectives about her work, Stapleton emphasized Edith’s compassion, intuition, joy, and love. Those qualities helped make Edith one of the show’s emotional centers, even when Archie’s arguments dominated the scene.
Rank #2
Rob Reiner as Michael “Meathead” Stivic
Rob Reiner died in December 2025 at age 78. Reports published in 2026 identify the date as December 2025, so it should not be described as a death occurring in 2026.
On All in the Family, Reiner played Michael Stivic, Archie Bunker’s liberal son-in-law. Archie’s nickname for him, “Meathead,” captured the family’s constant political and generational conflict: Michael represented a younger, left-leaning worldview that challenged Archie’s prejudices and assumptions.
Reiner’s career after acting became one of the most consequential second acts associated with the show. He became a prominent writer-director, directing This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, and A Few Good Men, among other films. His legacy therefore has two distinct halves: the argumentative son-in-law who helped make All in the Family a cultural flashpoint, and the filmmaker behind several widely recognized American movies.

Sally Struthers is the only surviving member of the show’s original four-person core cast as of August 12, 2026. She turned 79 on July 28, 2026.
Struthers played Gloria Stivic, Archie and Edith’s daughter and Michael’s wife. Gloria was often placed between her father’s traditionalism and her husband’s liberal politics, but she was not merely a mediator. The character had her own opinions, emotional stakes, and changing relationship with both men.
Rank #3
After All in the Family, Struthers continued a career spanning acting, theater, television, and voice work. She remains publicly associated with acting and with the role of Gloria, although it would be too strong to claim a specific current production, residence, or retirement status without more recent confirmation.
Struthers’ survival within the original quartet gives her current status particular significance, but it does not mean she is the only performer from the entire series who is alive. The program had many supporting and later performers, whose circumstances must be considered separately.

Danielle Brisebois as Stephanie Mills: the later cast member who became a songwriter
Danielle Brisebois joined the later years of All in the Family as Stephanie Mills, the young relative whose presence brought a different set of family and social questions into the Bunker household. She also appeared in the continuation series Archie Bunker’s Place.
Brisebois eventually moved away from child acting and built a career in music. She was a member of the New Radicals and continued a songwriting partnership with Gregg Alexander. Together, Brisebois and Alexander co-wrote “Lost Stars” for the film Begin Again. The song received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.
That transition makes Brisebois one of the clearest examples of an All in the Family child performer who established a successful second career outside acting. The well-supported description of her later work is singer, songwriter, and producer; there is not enough evidence here to say that she currently acts regularly.

What happened to the characters?
The fictional fates of the characters should not be confused with the real-life status of the actors. Archie, Edith, Gloria, and Michael are television characters whose stories continued through the original series and, in Archie’s case, through Archie Bunker’s Place. The deaths of O’Connor, Stapleton, and Reiner are real-life events involving the performers, not story developments in the sitcom.
The distinction is especially important with a show that remained visible through reruns, home video, retrospectives, and licensed viewing. A familiar character can seem “present” long after the actor who played that role has died.
How to watch or revisit All in the Family
The series remains relevant both as a landmark sitcom and as a record of how American television addressed political disagreement, racism, sexism, religion, class, and generational change. Its arguments can feel dated in places, but the basic dramatic setup—people with opposing beliefs forced to share a home—continues to explain the show’s enduring appeal.
For viewers who want every season in one physical collection, the All in the Family complete series DVD contains all nine seasons and 208 episodes on a 28-disc set. Availability and pricing can change, so check the current listing before purchasing. Individual season releases may be useful for viewers who want a smaller commitment or a particular period of the show, but the complete collection is the most straightforward option for a full rewatch.

All in the Family was built around a family argument, but its performers went in notably different directions afterward. O’Connor extended Archie before earning renewed acclaim in a serious police drama. Stapleton continued the stage and character-acting career that had preceded Edith. Reiner moved from sitcom performer to major film director. Struthers remained active across several forms of entertainment. Brisebois changed fields almost entirely, becoming an accomplished songwriter and producer.

That range is why a “where are they now?” account should be more than a list of deaths and current ages. The show made the four original performers famous together, but their later careers were separate—and, in several cases, just as distinctive as their work in the Bunker household.
