Visitors can also encounter the tombs of many popes, including Saint Peter, in the public Vatican Grottoes. Those are two different underground areas: the Grottoes are a free visit during posted hours, while the Necropolis is a restricted archaeological route that requires an advance request, confirmation and a specialized guide.
The practical distinction matters. You cannot simply walk into the excavations whenever the Basilica is open. The Grottoes and the Necropolis have separate access rules, schedules, prices and physical requirements.
Where is St. Peter’s tomb?
St. Peter’s tomb is located below St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican Necropolis, the ancient burial area beneath the present church. The Basilica’s official visitor information also lists Saint Peter among the tombs in the Vatican Grottoes, the underground area open to general visitors.
These statements describe related but distinct visitor settings. The Grottoes are the public underground passage beneath the Basilica. The Necropolis is the archaeological area below them, visited only through a specially authorized, scheduled tour. The Fabbrica di San Pietro, the body responsible for the Basilica’s works and visitor arrangements, describes that appointment as a special concession authorized according to an appropriate schedule.

In other words, “seeing St. Peter’s tomb” can mean two different experiences. A visitor entering the Grottoes can visit the public area containing tombs identified by the official FAQ as including Saint Peter’s. A visitor who wants the dedicated archaeological route associated with the Tomb of Saint Peter must obtain a Necropolis booking.
The two underground visits at a glance
| Option | Access and cost | What it offers | Main constraints |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vatican Grottoes | Free; open daily from 9:00 to 18:00 under the current official FAQ | Public underground visit; the FAQ says the tombs include Saint Peter’s | No guided tour can be requested for this visit; photography is forbidden |
| Vatican Necropolis | Advance-booked guided visit; the current booking page lists €20 full price and €14 for ages 10–17 | Scheduled archaeological visit identified by the booking page as the place “where the Tomb of Saint Peter is kept” | Limited capacity, age 10 minimum, stairs and uneven ancient pavement, no photography or video, and restricted days and times |
The Basilica’s opening hours do not automatically apply to either underground visit. Treat each area as a separate attraction when planning.
What can you see in the Vatican Grottoes?
The Vatican Grottoes lie beneath St. Peter’s Basilica and contain the tombs of numerous popes. The Basilica’s official FAQ specifically includes Saint Peter among those tombs. For a visitor who wants a straightforward, free underground stop during a Vatican itinerary, this is the accessible option in the sense of booking: no advance archaeological-tour request is required.
Hours and entry
The current FAQ lists the Grottoes as open every day from 9:00 to 18:00. These are Grotto hours, not the opening hours of the Basilica above. Entry is free, but visitors still pass through the Basilica complex’s security and visitor flow, so an advertised closing time does not guarantee immediate entry at the end of the day.

Rules inside the Grottoes
- Photography is forbidden.
- Guided tours cannot be requested for the Grottoes visit.
- Visitors should follow signs and staff directions in this religious space.
The Grottoes provide a public devotional and historical visit, but they should not be described as unrestricted access to the archaeological excavations. The specialized excavation route is the Necropolis tour.
What is the Vatican Necropolis visit?
The Necropolis is the dedicated archaeological experience beneath the Basilica. Its official booking page calls it the special visit “to the Necropolis beneath the Basilica, where the Tomb of Saint Peter is kept.” The wording identifies the destination of the scheduled route; it does not mean that the area is open for casual, self-guided entry.
How the tour operates
The visit is conducted by a specialized guide and lasts about one hour. The booking page states that capacity is approximately 250 visitors per day, divided into groups of about 12 participants. Those figures are operational limits given by the Fabbrica di San Pietro’s current booking information, not a historical study or an estimate of the number of pilgrims visiting the Basilica.
Booking is mandatory. A requested date and time are only indicative until the Visits Office confirms them, and extraordinary events can alter or cancel a visit. The selected time applies to the ticket that is issued for that appointment.

Current prices and payment
The booking page currently lists €20 for a full-price ticket and €14 for visitors aged 10–17. The specialized guide is included. The page specifies credit-card payment for the booking. Prices and availability can change, so check the official booking information close to your travel date rather than relying on an old itinerary or reseller listing.
Necropolis hours, closures and advance planning
| Day | Visiting window | Last visit |
|---|---|---|
| Monday–Friday | 9:00–16:30 | 16:15 |
| Saturday | 9:00–13:00 | 12:15 |
| Sunday | Closed | Not applicable |
| Vatican public holidays | Closed | Not applicable |
The booking page also enumerates additional 2026 closure dates. Because the Visits Office can change the calendar for special events, use the current page’s date list when selecting a tour. A form submission is not a confirmed appointment until the office responds.
How to request a Necropolis visit
- Choose the correct underground area. Select the Grottoes if you want the free public visit. Select the Necropolis if you specifically want the scheduled archaeological route associated with the Tomb of Saint Peter.
- Submit the official Necropolis request. Provide a preferred date and time through the Fabbrica di San Pietro’s booking form. Treat the requested slot as provisional.
- Wait for confirmation from the Visits Office. Do not build a non-refundable travel connection around the requested time until it has been confirmed. The office’s schedule, special events and capacity determine whether the request can be accepted.
- Pay using the method specified by the booking page. The current page lists credit-card payment and the €20 full or €14 age-10-to-17 price categories.
- Check the ticket’s conditions. The ticket is valid for its selected time, and the FAQ states that tickets are non-refundable.
- Arrive at least 10 minutes early. Late arrival can jeopardize entry because groups move on a fixed guided schedule.
- Prepare for the route. Wear clothing covering the shoulders and legs to at least the knee, and be ready for stairs, uneven ancient pavement and an underground environment.
Age, mobility and health restrictions
Necropolis visitors must be at least 10 years old. The route includes stairs at the entrance and exit and uneven ancient flooring. The official FAQ says the visit is not accessible for people with disabilities and advises people with certain physical concerns, including claustrophobia, not to participate.
These are route conditions, not a judgment about an individual’s ability. If you have a mobility limitation, respiratory concern, balance problem or anxiety about enclosed spaces, contact the official Visits Office before requesting a ticket and explain your circumstances. Do not assume that assistance available elsewhere in the Basilica makes the archaeological route suitable.

Facilities and conduct
- No restrooms are available during the underground Necropolis visit.
- Restrooms are available before and after the tour in designated areas.
- Photography and video are prohibited.
- Touching archaeological structures is prohibited.
- Visitors must remain with and follow the specialized guide.
What should you wear?
Because the Basilica and its underground spaces are religious sites, shoulders and legs should be covered at least to the knee. This applies to both men and women. Clothing that meets the rule also avoids a preventable problem at security or at the tour meeting point.
Do St. Peter’s Basilica hours include the underground areas?
No. The Basilica’s current hours are a separate planning reference. New hours effective June 1, 2026 are 7:00–20:00 daily, with last entry by 19:15, subject to visitor flow and security waiting times. Those times describe the Basilica, not the Grottoes or the Necropolis.
The Grottoes have their own stated 9:00–18:00 schedule. The Necropolis follows its weekday and Saturday timetable, closes Sundays and Vatican public holidays, and requires a confirmed appointment. A Basilica entry late in the day therefore does not create a late-day Necropolis slot.

Choose the Grottoes when flexibility matters most
The Grottoes are the practical choice if you need a free visit, are traveling without a fixed schedule, or cannot meet the Necropolis’s age and physical requirements. You can visit during the published daily hours without requesting a specialized guide. The trade-off is that photography is prohibited and the visit is not the dedicated archaeological tour.

Choose the Necropolis when archaeological specificity matters most
The Necropolis is the better match if your priority is the scheduled route identified by the official booking page as the place where the Tomb of Saint Peter is kept. In exchange for that specificity, you accept a paid ticket, advance booking, a confirmation wait, fixed group timing, a one-hour guided visit and stricter physical requirements.
Plan both only if the schedule allows
Some visitors may include the Grottoes and a confirmed Necropolis tour in the same Vatican day. Leave a substantial buffer between activities for security lines, movement through the Basilica complex and the possibility that visitor flow slows entry. Do not count the Grottoes as a substitute for a Necropolis appointment or assume that a Necropolis ticket includes unrestricted time in the Grottoes.
What is established about the tomb’s identification?
The access information supplied by the Basilica and the Fabbrica di San Pietro identifies Saint Peter’s tomb in two complementary ways: the Grottoes FAQ lists it among the tombs in the public area, while the Necropolis booking page identifies the dedicated archaeological destination as the place where the Tomb of Saint Peter is kept.
The visitor pages do not provide a named statistical study about the tomb’s identification, nor do they supply an attributable quotation from a named archaeologist in the material used here. A careful visitor guide should therefore describe the official identification and access arrangements without presenting an unsupported research statistic or personal archaeological verdict.
Before you go: a concise checklist
- Decide whether you want the free Grottoes or the paid, scheduled Necropolis route.
- For the Necropolis, submit a request early and wait for written confirmation.
- Verify the current price, operating day, closure list and confirmed time.
- Make sure every Necropolis visitor is at least 10 years old.
- Arrive 10 minutes before the confirmed appointment.
- Wear clothing covering shoulders and knees.
- Expect stairs and uneven ancient pavement; consult the Visits Office about individual accessibility concerns.
- Plan for no photography or video and no restroom access during the underground tour.
- Keep Basilica, Grottoes and Necropolis hours separate in your itinerary.
So, can visitors see St. Peter’s tomb? Yes, but the kind of access depends on which underground area you mean. The Vatican Grottoes offer a free daily visit in the public underground complex and identify Saint Peter among the tombs there. The Vatican Necropolis offers the more specific archaeological visit, but only for confirmed, age-eligible visitors in small guided groups at an assigned time.
