Fox played as Marty McFly in Back to the Future had not been publicly confirmed found in Gibson’s latest cited update, published in October 2025. Gibson said it was pursuing several promising leads then; that dated update does not establish the guitar’s status after that point. The instrument is best known from Marty’s “Johnny B. Goode” performance at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance.
What guitar is missing?
It is the Cherry Red Gibson ES-345 used in the film’s school-dance performance—not a modern replica or one of Gibson’s anniversary editions. Gibson and the official Back to the Future site announced a public search for the original on June 3, 2025, inviting people to submit tips. Gibson’s search announcement identifies the instrument with the scene in which Marty performs Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode.”
Gibson’s anniversary announcement says the guitar came from Norman Harris of Norman’s Rare Guitars. The company also says filmmakers tried to locate it during production of the sequel but could not find it. The Associated Press reported that history when the public search launched. AP’s report on the search quotes Fox joking that the guitar might be “lost in the space-time continuum” or in “some Teamster’s garage.”
Has the guitar been found?
Gibson’s October 2025 announcement said the search was ongoing and that the company was pursuing a handful of promising leads. The cited official updates do not confirm a recovery or a conclusion after that announcement, so they cannot establish the guitar’s present-day status. What clues could identify the original?
In a July 4, 2025 search update, Gibson Director of Brand Experience Mark Agnesi described the guitar as believed to be a 1960 or 1961 ES-345 and pointed to a solid parallelogram inlay at the 12th fret as a distinguishing clue. Gibson presents the year as an estimate; the inlay is a helpful identification feature, not proof of an individual guitar’s identity or serial number. Read Gibson’s July search update.
Why does the guitar appear in a scene set in 1955?
The dance takes place in the film’s 1955 timeline, but the ES-345 was introduced in 1959, according to Gibson’s product page for the later tribute model. The guitar is therefore an intentional continuity anachronism in the story, not a reason to doubt the instrument’s identification. What are the anniversary guitars?
Gibson announced two separate tributes in 2025. Neither is the missing film-used guitar.

Gibson describes the Epiphone as a layered-maple semi-hollow guitar with a maple centerblock, mahogany neck, rosewood fretboard, two Alnico Classic PRO pickups, mono Varitone, Bigsby B70 tailpiece and themed hardshell case. Its availability can change, and the manufacturer’s page does not establish stock at other sellers. The edition limits are Gibson’s announced production figures, not estimates of current inventory. What did Michael J. Fox say about the scene?
Fox said he planned a sequence of guitar flourishes with the cinematographer and choreographer, drawing on performers including Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townshend and Eddie Van Halen. He described being able to incorporate those ideas into the performance as “so cool.” Gibson’s launch announcement includes his account. Co-creator, screenwriter and producer Bob Gale said that without a functioning time machine, the search was “probably our best chance to solve a decades-long mystery.”
