Buster Murdaugh’s life has changed substantially since the murder case that made the Murdaugh family a national story. Where does Buster Murdaugh live?
Buster and White were reported to have bought a home in 2023 in a subdivision near Hilton Head Island. That is the last substantial residence information identified in reliable public reporting.
It is not the same as confirming where Buster lives in August 2026. His precise current residence has not been independently documented in reliable sources. For that reason, describing him simply as living in Bluffton or naming a current address goes beyond the available evidence.
What does Buster Murdaugh do for work?
There is no verified public evidence that Buster is currently a practicing attorney, working at the former family law firm or enrolled in law school.

His place in the Murdaugh family story
Buster remains the only surviving child of Alex and Maggie Murdaugh. His younger brother, Paul, and his mother, Maggie, were killed on June 7, 2021, at the family’s property in Colleton County, South Carolina.
Alex Murdaugh was convicted in 2023 of killing them. That conviction is no longer final. On May 13, 2026, the South Carolina Supreme Court reversed the murder convictions and sent the case back for a new trial. The court found that former Colleton County Clerk Rebecca Hill improperly influenced jurors, depriving Alex of a fair trial.
A retrial is scheduled to begin on April 5, 2027. The reversal did not release Alex. He remains incarcerated under a 27-year sentence for separate financial crimes, according to the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office.
That distinction matters when describing Buster’s situation. It is inaccurate to say that his father is currently serving two life sentences for the murders. The murder convictions were overturned, while the financial-crime convictions remain the reason Alex is imprisoned.

What is the connection to Stephen Smith?
Buster has also been connected in public discussion to the death of Stephen Smith, a 19-year-old whose body was found on a South Carolina road in 2015. Rumors about Smith and the Murdaugh family circulated for years, but they should not be presented as established facts.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division reopened Smith’s death as a murder investigation in 2023. No one has been charged in the killing, and no publicly produced evidence links Buster to Smith’s death. Buster has denied involvement.
Because documentaries and other productions discussed the rumors, Buster pursued defamation claims against media defendants. His lawsuit alleges that some programs falsely implied that he murdered Smith or had a romantic relationship with him.
The litigation has proceeded in separate courts. In February 2025, claims involving Netflix and Gannett defendants were remanded to state court, while claims against Warner-related defendants remained in federal court. On June 9, 2025, a federal judge denied those defendants’ motions to dismiss. Those procedural rulings did not determine whether Buster’s allegations were ultimately true; they allowed parts of the case to continue.
