The former Dragon Warrior is asked to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace, but first he must identify and train a successor. His search leads him to Zhen, a resourceful corsac fox, and into conflict with the Chameleon, a sorceress who can copy the forms and abilities of other creatures.
What is Kung Fu Panda 4 about?
Directed by Mike Mitchell and co-directed by Stephanie Ma Stine, the film follows Po after years of protecting the Valley of Peace as the Dragon Warrior. Master Shifu tells him that his next responsibility is not another battle: he must assume the role of Spiritual Leader and prepare someone else to carry the Dragon Warrior title.
Po is reluctant to leave the role that made him famous. His search for a replacement brings him together with Zhen, a quick-witted thief whose practical instincts contrast with Po’s enthusiasm and impulsiveness. Their journey takes them beyond the familiar Valley of Peace and toward Juniper City, where the Chameleon has built her power.
The Chameleon is a shapeshifting sorceress who can take the form of other animals and warriors, along with their abilities. That power allows the film to revisit elements of the franchise’s past while giving Po a threat that cannot be defeated simply by overpowering it.

In particular, Jackie Chan, Angelina Jolie, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen and David Cross are associated with previous Kung Fu Panda films but are not included in DreamWorks’ principal cast listing for Kung Fu Panda 4.

Reviews were mixed to positive. How it fits the franchise
The fourth film follows Kung Fu Panda 3, which was released in 2016. Its central conflict is less about proving that Po deserves to be the Dragon Warrior and more about whether he can accept that his identity is changing. The story uses succession, mentorship and responsibility as its main themes.

That makes the film a transition point for the series. Po remains the comic, food-loving hero audiences know, but his new challenge is to guide another character rather than solve every problem himself. Zhen’s involvement also gives the film a different partnership from Po’s relationships with the Furious Five and his family.
