As of August 9, 2026, Bill Cosby is alive, 89, out of prison and largely absent from public life. He has not returned to a confirmed regular comedy schedule. Instead, recent reporting has centered on his health, property disputes and continuing civil litigation.
Cosby’s release did not amount to an exoneration. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court vacated his criminal convictions in 2021 because it found that his due-process rights had been violated—not because the court determined that the allegations against him were false.
Where Bill Cosby lives now
Public reporting continues to place Cosby at his estate in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. Reliable coverage does not establish a different primary residence, and a precise private address should not be published.
Cosby and his wife, Camille Cosby, have also held property in Manhattan. Their real-estate finances became a matter of public court reporting in 2025, when filings described mortgage defaults involving two Upper East Side townhouses. One of those properties was reportedly sold for $28 million in November 2025; another was removed from the market in 2026.

Those property developments offer a limited picture of Cosby’s circumstances, but they do not show that he has relocated or resumed a public professional life.
His health and day-to-day life
In July 2026 court filings, Cosby’s attorney described him as legally blind, affected by major mobility problems and other age-related health conditions, and dependent on a male assistant for safety and basic needs. These are statements made by his lawyer in litigation and should be treated as attributed claims rather than an independently confirmed medical diagnosis.
According to reporting on those filings, Cosby missed depositions scheduled for June 23 and 24, 2026, because the support person he required was unavailable. The episode illustrates how limited his current mobility and independence may be, although detailed information about his private daily routine is not publicly available.
Why Bill Cosby left prison
Cosby was released on June 30, 2021, after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court vacated his conviction and sentence in the Andrea Constand case and ordered that he be discharged. The court’s reasoning concerned the prosecution’s use of testimony Cosby had given in a civil deposition.
Rank #2
A previous prosecutor had made a non-prosecution assurance that led Cosby to provide potentially incriminating testimony in that civil matter. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court concluded that the later prosecution violated his due-process rights. The court did not declare him factually innocent, and the ruling did not establish that the alleged conduct never happened.
That distinction matters when describing his status:
| Accurate description | Inaccurate or misleading description |
|---|---|
| His Pennsylvania convictions were vacated. | He was exonerated. |
| He was ordered released after the judgment and sentence were vacated. | He was released on parole. |
| The decision was based on a due-process violation. | The court found that the allegations were false. |
Cosby therefore has no operative Pennsylvania criminal conviction in the Constand case, but his release should not be described as a finding of innocence.
The 2026 California civil verdict
Cosby’s legal problems did not end with his release. In March 2026, a California civil jury found him liable to Donna Motsinger, who alleged that he drugged and sexually assaulted her in 1972. The jury awarded $19.25 million in compensatory damages and $40 million in punitive damages, for a total of $59.25 million.

This was a civil case, not a criminal prosecution. “Liable” is the appropriate legal term; the verdict was not a criminal conviction and did not send Cosby back to prison.
A judge in Los Angeles County denied Cosby’s request for a new trial on May 29, 2026. The judge rejected the defense arguments that a trial irregularity had denied Cosby a fair proceeding and that the damages were excessive. Cosby’s attorney said the defense intended to appeal. The reliable reporting available as of August 9, 2026, confirms the verdict and the denial of a new trial, but does not establish a final appellate outcome.
Other civil litigation remains active
Cosby also remains involved in separate New York civil litigation. In Doe v. Cosby, a New York judge ruled on April 9, 2026, that the state’s Adult Survivors Act was not unconstitutional and denied Cosby’s motion to dismiss on that ground.
The case includes allegations of assault, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Those claims remain allegations unless and until they are adjudicated. The New York ruling allowed the case to proceed; it was not a final finding that Cosby was liable.

Is Bill Cosby performing again?
There is no verified current announcement establishing an active Bill Cosby comedy tour or regular entertainment schedule. Reports about a possible return to stand-up largely date from 2022 and 2023. Those earlier discussions should not be presented as evidence of a confirmed 2026 comeback.
Cosby’s present public profile is consequently very different from the one he had during his television career. He is no longer a regular presence on network television or the comedy circuit, and recent coverage has focused on court proceedings, health concerns and property matters.
