In the 2025 film Wicked: For Good, Fiyero survives the attempt on his life, is revealed as the Scarecrow, and leaves Oz with Elphaba. The final image shows the pair crossing the badlands toward an unknown horizon. The film never names a destination, country, or settlement, so the answer to “where are they going” is deliberately left open.
What the ending establishes
- Fiyero survives and becomes the Scarecrow. His survival and transformation are part of the closing escape sequence rather than a separate subplot.
- Elphaba is alive. The public believes she has died, but she reunites with Fiyero and leaves Oz with him.
- They cross the badlands. The film shows the pair heading into the desert and toward an unknown horizon. This is the film’s own addition to the story’s final moments.
- The film closes on a flashback to Shiz. The final sequence circles back to the university where the story began before the credits.
What the film shows is that they are going beyond Oz. What it does not show is where that leads. Naming a country, a town, or a specific destination goes beyond what the ending supports.

Why the film leaves the destination open
The film frames the escape as a chance for Elphaba and Fiyero to begin again, away from the authorities and the public story told about Elphaba in Oz. The desert is presented as open possibility rather than a planned route. Director Jon M. Chu described the choice this way, in comments reported by Capital from an Entertainment Weekly interview:
“[The desert] is not dead space, it’s possibility. No one has explored that horizon because everyone’s too scared.”

That line explains the intent of the image. It does not map a route. Readers searching for a destination should treat the badlands as a statement about hope and the unknown, not as a location the film identifies.
What remains speculation
- A settlement with escaped Animals. Fan theories about the pair founding a community are interpretations. The film does not show or confirm this.
- A specific country or itinerary. No place name, map, or travel plan appears in the ending.
- Their life after the crossing. The film ends as they move forward, so anything about how they live, where they settle, or whether Oz ever learns the truth is not established.
- Whether Glinda knows they survived. Glinda takes on responsibility for Oz’s future, and the Grimmerie opens for her. The ending does not suggest she knows the pair are alive.
How the stage musical differs
The Broadway musical also ends with Elphaba and Fiyero escaping together, and it reveals Fiyero as the Scarecrow before they go. The film keeps that core but extends it. The comparison below is based on Vanity Fair’s dated report on the film and the musical.
Rank #2
- Runtime: 138 minutes
| Element | Wicked: For Good (2025 film) | Stage musical |
|---|---|---|
| Fiyero survives and is revealed as the Scarecrow | Yes | Yes |
| Elphaba and Fiyero escape together | Yes | Yes |
| Journey across the badlands is shown | Yes, in the final moments | No, the staging closes with the escape |
| Closing flashback to Shiz | Yes | Not stated in the Vanity Fair comparison |
| Glinda’s role in Oz’s future | Glinda takes responsibility and the Grimmerie opens for her | Not stated in the Vanity Fair comparison |
If you are comparing versions, the useful question is how much of the journey each version shows. The film adds the desert crossing; the stage version stops at the escape.
The original novel ends differently
Gregory Maguire’s novel, the source for the musical and films, has a darker ending. According to the Vanity Fair comparison, Elphaba dies after Dorothy douses her with water. The film and musical endings should not be presented as the novel’s ending, since they follow a different path.

Sources and dates
The premise, cast, creators, and adaptation lineage come from Universal Pictures’ official film page. The description of the film’s final sequence and its differences from the musical comes from Vanity Fair’s film-versus-musical report. Chu’s comments on the desert come from Capital’s report of his Entertainment Weekly interview. Each source is cited by outlet; no direct links are included here.
The destination beyond the badlands and the couple’s future are not resolved in these sources, and the film itself does not resolve them either.
