If you mean Peter Jackson’s three live-action Hobbit films, U.S. listings checked August 18, 2026 show all three on Max, Max through Amazon’s Prime Video Channel, and YouTube TV. You can also rent or buy them digitally; the extended editions are a separate choice, so check the edition label before pressing play or paying.
Where to stream all three Hobbit movies
For a viewer who already subscribes, Max is the simplest option: current U.S. listings show the theatrical trilogy available with a Max subscription. The same titles are listed through the Max Amazon Channel and on YouTube TV. These are subscription services, not free, ad-supported access. Availability was checked August 18, 2026, and streaming rights can change; confirm each title in your own account before subscribing.

If you only plan to watch once, renting can be more practical than starting a new subscription. The films are listed for digital rental or purchase through Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango at Home. Some listings also show Spectrum On Demand or Plex for An Unexpected Journey; that does not mean those services carry every film or cut.
#1 Best Overall
As a dated price snapshot, U.S. aggregator listings observed in August 2026 put many rentals around $3.99–$5.99 and digital purchases around $7.99–$14.99, depending on title, retailer, edition, and resolution. Prices change, so check the checkout screen. A rental provides temporary viewing access under that retailer’s terms. A digital purchase is generally access through the retailer account and app, not the same as owning a disc outright.
Apple lists both a standard-edition trilogy bundle and an extended-edition trilogy bundle. Compare the bundle price with three individual titles and confirm that the included cut is the one you want.
Rank #2
- Extended Edition Collection: Experience Peter Jackson's complete Middle-earth journey with all three films from The Hobbit trilogy in their extended versions, featuring additional scenes and content not shown in theatrical releases for a more immersive storytelling experience
- High-Definition Blu-ray: Enjoy stunning visual quality with crisp Blu-ray format that brings the breathtaking landscapes of New Zealand, intricate costume details, and spectacular special effects to life in your home theater
- Epic Fantasy Adventure: Follow Bilbo Baggins on his unexpected journey from the Shire through treacherous mountains, dark forests, and dragon lairs as he encounters trolls, goblins, elves, and the mysterious creature Gollum in this beloved adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic novel
- Extended Runtime Content: Dive deeper into Middle-earth with hours of additional footage seamlessly integrated into the narrative, providing enhanced character development, expanded battle sequences, and richer world-building throughout all three films
- Complete Trilogy Set: Own the entire saga including An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and The Battle of the Five Armies in one comprehensive collection for marathon viewing and fans of epic fantasy cinema
Are the extended editions available?
Yes, Apple’s U.S. store lists extended-edition titles and an extended trilogy bundle. It also lists the standard edition and the extended edition of An Unexpected Journey; Apple gives their runtimes as 2 hours 49 minutes and 3 hours 2 minutes, respectively.

Look for “Extended Edition” in the title or details page before starting a stream, rental, or purchase. For a specific edition, physical Blu-ray, 4K UHD, or DVD is another option; discs can also be a more dependable fallback if you want long-term access. Retailers such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble list movie discs.
The Hobbit movies in order
Watch Peter Jackson’s trilogy in release order:
- The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)
- The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
- The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)
For the larger Middle-earth film series, release order means watching The Lord of the Rings trilogy first, followed by The Hobbit trilogy. Chronological story order puts The Hobbit films first. Either works; release order preserves the order in which the films reached audiences. See Amazon’s viewing-order guide for the broader series.

- Already have Max: Check the Max app for all three theatrical films before paying elsewhere.
- Use Prime Video: Check whether you have the Max Amazon Channel. Prime membership by itself does not guarantee access to Max titles.
- Already subscribe to YouTube TV: Search its on-demand listings; do not treat it as a free YouTube video listing.
- Watching just once: Compare individual rentals, rather than paying for a new recurring subscription.
- Want the extended cuts: Choose a listing explicitly labeled “Extended Edition,” such as Apple’s extended bundle, or look for an extended-edition disc set.
- Want repeat viewing without relying on streaming rights: Compare a digital bundle with Blu-ray or 4K UHD discs. Digital access depends on your retailer account and service; a disc is a physical copy.
What about the 1977 animated The Hobbit?
This answer covers Peter Jackson’s 2012–2014 live-action trilogy, not the separate 1977 animated adaptation or Tolkien’s novel. Their availability is different, so check a current listing for that specific title rather than assuming it is included with the same service.

Is The Hobbit free to watch?
No verified free, legal, ad-supported U.S. option was established for the Jackson trilogy in the listings used here. A film included with Max or YouTube TV still requires a paid subscription, even if you already pay for it. Rental, digital purchase, and physical discs are separate paid options.
