Where Are the Homes and Home-Like Places in James Bond Movies?

Bond films blur the line between fictional homes and real filming locations. Skyfall Lodge, Piz Gloria and Ardverikie show why each property needs a precise label.

James Bond films show a mix of fictional residences, lairs, real properties standing in for other places, and studio-built sets. They are not all “homes” in the same sense—and the available location guides do not establish a complete inventory of every Bond residence. The clearest example is Skyfall Lodge: it is Bond’s ancestral home in the story, but the lodge was built for filming in Surrey, England, while the film presents it as a Scottish estate.

What counts as a Bond movie “home”?

A home in a Bond film can mean a residence inhabited by a character, a villain’s lair, or a building used as a setting that only resembles a home on screen. It can also refer to the real-world filming property, which may have a different purpose—or to a set built to portray a fictional residence. Keeping those categories separate prevents a hotel, restaurant, clinic, or country estate from being mislabeled as a character’s house.

The distinction matters across the franchise. The official 007 site said in 2023 that the 25 films had featured more than a hundred locations; that figure counts locations, not homes. Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli described the importance of those settings this way: “These destinations are not just backgrounds, or even backgrounds that simply inform characters. In our movies, they are characters.” The official 007 article attributes the quotation to them.

Skyfall Lodge: Bond’s Scottish home, built in England

In Skyfall (2012), the remote lodge is presented as the ancestral home of Bond’s family in Scotland. The on-screen setting and the filming location are different: VisitScotland’s 2022 Set in Scotland guide says the Skyfall estate was filmed in England. The fan location reference Department M identifies the lodge as a structure built from scratch on Ministry of Defence land at Hankley Common in Surrey, rather than an existing Scottish family home. Department M’s Skyfall Lodge entry is the source for the construction detail; VisitScotland provides tourism-board context for the England/Scotland distinction.

So Skyfall Lodge is best understood as a purpose-built filming set representing a fictional Scottish residence—not a real ancestral Bond house that visitors can locate in the Highlands. The example also shows why a film’s depicted country should not be confused with the property’s actual location.

Real buildings that play other roles

Piz Gloria: restaurant as fictional clinic

In On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969), Blofeld’s mountain-top allergy clinic is associated with Piz Gloria, a real revolving restaurant in Switzerland. The James Bond Filming Locations catalogue identifies the restaurant as the location used for the fictional clinic. It is a real building in the production, but it is not presented as a private Bond residence.

Ardverikie Estate: a location, not a confirmed Bond home

For No Time to Die (2021), VisitScotland identifies Ardverikie Estate on Loch Laggan as a filming location standing in for mainland Norway. That establishes the estate’s production role, not that it is a character’s home in the story.

Country houses need a scene-specific label

The James Bond Filming Locations catalogue lists Chalfont Park House in connection with Thunderball (1965), but that listing alone does not establish that the building portrays a residence. The same caution applies to Heatherden Hall, an Edwardian country house at Pinewood Studios that appears in a location index: a country-house appearance or listing is not enough to identify it as a home in a particular film. The scene and narrative role need to be established before assigning either label.

How to read Bond location lists

Film-location catalogues are useful for finding candidate sites, but their entries may include hotels, restaurants, estates, clinics, lairs, and other settings alongside residences. A reliable home list would need to specify whether it includes only character residences or also villain lairs, hotels, and temporary lodgings; whether it covers studio sets; and whether it includes non-Eon films. The BondMovies.com index distinguishes official and unofficial entries, while VisitScotland explicitly notes that the 1967 Casino Royale is not an official Bond film.

For any individual entry, check four things before calling it a “house”: what the building represents in the story, where the scene is set, where filming took place, and whether the structure is an existing property or a purpose-built set. A catalogue listing is a lead, not by itself a complete production record or proof of public access.

Further location reference

On the Tracks of 007 is a physical location guide covering films from Dr. No (1962) through Quantum of Solace (2008). Its publisher describes the guide as 288 pages with 665 photographs; those are publisher-supplied specifications. Its coverage is useful for travel and location context, but it ends before later films and is not a home-only catalogue. The publisher’s book page describes the field guide and its edition information.
