As of January 2026, Elizabeth Smart lives in Utah with her husband, Matthew Gilmour, and their three children. She continues to advocate for survivors and leads work through the Elizabeth Smart Foundation. Her father, Ed Smart, is retired professionally but remains involved in advocacy. Ed and Lois Smart divorced in 2019; Lois has kept a low public profile, and little reliable recent information is available about her life.

Where Elizabeth Smart is now

In a Netflix Tudum interview published January 23, 2026, Smart described living in Utah with Gilmour and their three children. She spoke about family routines and ordinary activities as part of her present life. Those details reflect her account at the time of the interview, not a permanent or independently verified record of her residence. Read the interview on Netflix Tudum.

Smart’s public work centers on survivor support, sexual-violence awareness and prevention. The Elizabeth Smart Foundation says she founded it in 2011. The organization currently lists several programs and resources:

  • Smart Defense: self-defense programming.
  • Smart Talks: a podcast and conversations on relevant topics.
  • We Believe You Survivor Stories: a platform for survivors’ stories.
  • Awareness and prevention work: education intended to address sexual violence.
  • Survivor Support Fund: assistance for adult survivors.

These descriptions are the foundation’s account of its own work, not an independent evaluation of its reach or impact. Its homepage also displays 1,500-plus participants and a 97% satisfaction rate, 70-plus podcast episodes and 220,000 episode downloads, and more than 700,000 people reached on social media. The page does not state the figures’ publication year; they should be read as undated, organization-reported metrics, not as independently verified outcomes. See the Elizabeth Smart Foundation.

Lois Smart

Ed and Lois Smart divorced in 2019. Biography.com reports that the divorce was finalized in December, after Ed publicly disclosed that he is gay. The divorce and his disclosure are biographical facts, not an explanation of the abduction or its aftermath. Biography.com’s account of the Smart family.

Lois declined to be interviewed for Netflix’s 2026 documentary. Biography.com says little is publicly known about her life today. The available reporting does not establish a current occupation, routine, or location, so it would be misleading to claim more. Biography.com.

Why the 2026 documentary includes some family members and not others

Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart premiered on Netflix on January 21, 2026. Netflix says the documentary features Elizabeth, Ed, her sister Mary Katherine, other family members, investigators, reporters and Utah residents who encountered Elizabeth during her captivity. Lois declined to be interviewed. Elizabeth said she respects relatives who prefer to leave the events in the past. Netflix’s documentary page.

Mary Katherine’s recollections helped identify the abductor, according to Elizabeth. In the same Tudum interview, Elizabeth described her sister as a special-education teacher with bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Her role in the family’s story is one reason the documentary reaches beyond Elizabeth and her father, while still leaving Lois’s choice to remain private intact. Netflix Tudum interview.

Elizabeth Smart Foundation.

In a February 27, 2026, Deseret News interview, Smart explained her reason for telling her story: “I wanted my story to be more than a courtroom transcript. I felt like it needed to serve a purpose.” She also said, “It was never the location that hurt me. That was just a place out in nature. It was just the people in those places that hurt me.” These are her reflections, not clinical evidence about recovery. Available reporting does not provide a published statistic or separate clinical assessment measuring how Smart or her family have fared personally since the abduction. Deseret News interview.
