The BBC, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf cancelled the planned episode on June 10, 2026. The latest confirmed Disney+ Christmas special remains “Joy to the World”, released on December 25, 2024.
Is there a Doctor Who Christmas special on Disney+ in 2026?
No. A Christmas 2026 episode was announced on October 28, 2025, but the BBC later said that it, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf had decided not to proceed with it. Their stated preference was to invest in the programme’s longer-term future rather than make a one-off episode to bridge the gap before future series.
The cancellation was announced June 10, 2026. No replacement date, title, cast announcement or streaming platform has been confirmed. It is therefore inaccurate to describe the episode as merely delayed or to give it a Christmas Day release time.

Why Disney+ is still associated with the Christmas special
Disney+ and the BBC jointly distributed the revived series internationally from the 60th-anniversary specials onward. In territories outside the United Kingdom and Ireland, Disney+ carried the 2023 and 2024 Christmas episodes. Older stories can therefore still appear in search results as though Disney+ is the permanent global home of new specials.
That arrangement covered two seasons and related programming. Disney+ is not partnering with the BBC on the next mainline season, as described in the BBC’s October 28, 2025 announcement. Availability remains territory-specific: the official show page describes Season 2 as streaming on Disney+ “where available,” not everywhere.

The last Doctor Who Christmas specials released on Disney+
| Special | Release date | Distribution note |
|---|---|---|
| “The Church on Ruby Road” | December 25, 2023 | Disney+ release outside the UK and Ireland; the original announcement listed a 9:55 a.m. release time, but that time should not be treated as a universal time zone. |
| “Joy to the World” | December 25, 2024 | Most recent confirmed Disney+ Christmas special; availability depends on territory. |
| Planned 2026 special | Not applicable | Cancelled June 10, 2026; no episode is scheduled. |
Disney+’s announcement for the two released specials is available at Disney Plus Press. There is no officially identified 2025 Christmas special.
What can viewers watch instead?
Disney+ subscribers outside the UK and Ireland
Search your local Disney+ app directly for “Joy to the World” and “The Church on Ruby Road.” A title may be filed under the show’s season listing rather than a separate “specials” category, and licensing can change by country. The official Doctor Who show page also lists Season 2 on Disney+ where available.

U.S. viewers seeking older episodes
Beginning June 11, 2026, AMC+ received exclusive U.S. streaming rights to 13 seasons and 175 episodes from the 2005–2022 library, including specials. That announcement covers the older library; it does not establish that AMC+ carries the newer Disney-era specials from 2023 onward. Check the current AMC+ catalogue before subscribing: official rights announcement.
Viewers in the United Kingdom
UK distribution is handled through BBC outlets rather than the international Disney+ arrangement. Check BBC iPlayer and the BBC’s current Doctor Who listings. Availability and viewing eligibility are governed by BBC iPlayer’s UK requirements.
Other recent Whoniverse programming
Spin-offs can have separate deals. For example, The War Between the Land and the Sea is listed for Disney+ in the United States on its official show page. Its availability does not mean a new main-series Christmas special exists.

The BBC says it remains committed to the franchise and that future plans are subject to its competitive tender process. As of August 18, 2026, no new main-series Christmas-special release date has been confirmed. Treat any date circulating online as unconfirmed unless it appears in a subsequent BBC, Doctor Who or distributor announcement.

What was the last Doctor Who Christmas special on Disney+?
“Joy to the World”, released December 25, 2024, is the latest confirmed Disney+ Christmas special.
Does AMC+ have every Doctor Who Christmas special?
