When ‘Google’ Was First Said on a TV Show: The Buffy Scene Often Cited

The “Have you Googled her yet?” exchange in Buffy’s “Help” is often cited as Google’s first TV use as a verb—but the all-TV claim is not proven.

The scene often cited as an early TV use of “Google” as a verb is in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, season 7, episode 4, “Help.” Willow asks Buffy, “Have you Googled her yet?” The exchange is commonly reported as the first, but the available evidence does not establish that no earlier television use existed.

Which Buffy episode has the Google exchange?

It is “Help,” the fourth episode of season 7. In the scene, Willow is asking about Cassie Newton. Xander mistakes her question for something inappropriate, prompting Willow to clarify that Google is a search engine. The episode transcript continues with Willow searching Cassie’s name and finding her website.

The dialogue is reproduced in IMDb’s episode quotes and in a searchable episode transcript. These sources support the wording and context, though neither is an official production script.

What exactly do Willow and Xander say?

Willow asks, “Have you Googled her yet?” Xander replies, “Willow, she’s 17!” Willow answers, “It’s a search engine.” The joke depends on Xander misunderstanding “Googled” as a sexual reference; Willow means searching online for Cassie.

Was this really the first time Google was used on television?

That is the claim often attached to the scene, but it should be treated as reported rather than conclusively proven. A 2016 Yahoo article by Yoni Heisler attributes October 15, 2002 as the date of the first reference to Google as a verb to Charles Arthur, and identifies the Buffy exchange.

The transcript and subtitle listing corroborate the scene; they do not provide an exhaustive comparison against every earlier TV broadcast. The claim is also narrower than “Google ever appeared on television”: this is a spoken English-language use of the brand as a verb. It does not establish the first appearance in on-screen text, captions, a dubbed version, or television worldwide.

When does the scene occur in the episode?

A subtitle listing for one 1080p WEB-DL version places the exchange at approximately 19:01–19:08. That is a timestamp for that particular subtitle listing, not a verified timecode for the original broadcast. The subtitle listing supports the displayed dialogue, but should not be used to claim an exact broadcast time.
