FX’s official behind-the-scenes material and companion podcast both identify 2120 as the series’ setting.
That makes the show a direct prequel to Alien. In the core live-action chronology, it comes after Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, but before Alien, Alien: Romulus, Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien: Resurrection.
The core Alien timeline
Here is the main chronological order for the live-action Alien films and series:
| Story | In-universe date | Position |
|---|---|---|
| Prometheus | Early 2090s, principally 2093 | Earliest major entry in the main sequence |
| Alien: Covenant | 2104 | After Prometheus |
| Alien: Earth | 2120 | Two years before Alien |
| Alien | 2122 | The Nostromo mission |
| Alien: Romulus | 2142 | Between Alien and Aliens |
| Aliens | 2179 | Ripley’s return to LV- not applicable; the Hadley’s Hope mission |
| Alien 3 | 2179 | Immediately after Aliens |
| Alien: Resurrection | 2381 | Roughly two centuries after Alien 3 |
Alien: Earth is therefore a direct prequel to the original Alien, not a sequel to Aliens. It takes place close enough to the Nostromo incident to show the corporate and technological world that exists immediately before the first film.

Why Alien: Earth is set in 2120
The year comes from FX’s official material, which places the series in 2120, and from the official companion podcast, which repeatedly uses the same date. A creator interview also describes the series as occurring two years before Alien. You can compare the date with FX’s official behind-the-scenes explanation of Alien: Earth and the creator interview discussing its placement.
The two-year gap is important. The series is not set in a remote prehistoric period of human expansion, nor is it a distant origin story for Ripley. It presents Earth in 2120, just before the commercial towing vessel Nostromo receives its fateful mission in 2122.
What happens in the 2120 setting?
The series begins when the USCSS Maginot crash-lands on Earth. FX’s official episode material identifies the ship and presents the crash as the event that sets the story in motion.
That premise changes the usual shape of an Alien story. The original film is built around an isolated crew in deep space. Alien: Earth instead places the danger on a densely populated homeworld where enormous corporations have political power comparable to that of nations. FX identifies five companies at the center of this 2120 power structure:
- Prodigy
- Weyland-Yutani
- Lynch
- Dynamic
- Threshold
The series’ other major piece of 2120 world-building is hybrid technology. Prodigy is developing synthetic bodies that can receive human consciousness. FX’s character material identifies Wendy as the first synthetic infused with a human consciousness by Prodigy, while the official podcast explains the broader purpose: moving consciousness out of a vulnerable organic body and into a potentially more durable synthetic one.
That technology gives the year 2120 its own identity. The show is not merely filling in an empty space before the Nostromo mission; it is exploring how the franchise’s corporate logic, artificial life, and ideas about human survival have developed on Earth.
Prometheus: the earliest major story
Prometheus belongs at the beginning of this movie-and-series chronology. Its principal LV-223 expedition is generally placed in 2093, although Hulu’s official viewing guide uses 2089 in its listing. The most careful description is “the early 2090s, principally 2093,” because the discovery and preparation period should not be treated as exactly the same date as the main expedition. Hulu’s official chronological guide is useful for the broad ordering.

The film introduces the Engineers, the ruins on LV-223, the black pathogen, David, and Elizabeth Shaw. Those elements provide important background for the franchise’s later themes, but the films and series do not offer one perfectly settled explanation of every biological event. In particular, it is too strong to say that Alien: Earth definitively confirms one complete answer about the xenomorph’s origin.

Alien: Covenant takes place in 2104, after Prometheus and before Alien: Earth. Its colonization ship, the Covenant, is traveling toward a distant world when the crew becomes involved in the David-centered continuation of the prequel storyline. The official 20th Century Studios page describes the film as a new chapter in the Alien universe, while Hulu’s chronology places it in 2104.
On the calendar, Covenant is 16 years before Alien: Earth and 18 years before Alien. That does not mean every later creative decision treats the mythology developed in the prequel films as equally binding. Noah Hawley has said that Alien: Earth takes particular inspiration from the thematic and world-building foundations of the first two Alien films. The series’ approach is better understood as selective continuity than as a simple declaration that the prequels never happened.
Alien: Earth: 2120
At the center of the timeline is 2120. The first season consists of eight episodes, beginning with “Neverland” and concluding with “The Real Monsters,” according to FX’s official series material.
One FX podcast listing displays an apparent date of “09/23/3025” for the eighth episode. That is not a year in the story and should not be used to date the show. It is inconsistent with the surrounding 2025 episode material and is best treated as a page error. The “3025” entry does not overturn the official in-universe setting of 2120.
The practical takeaway is simple: when someone says that Alien: Earth occurs “30 years before Alien,” they are repeating an earlier reported or circulating placement. The released show’s official placement is 2120, which puts it two years before the original film’s 2122 events.
Alien: 2122
The original Alien follows the crew of the commercial towing vessel Nostromo in 2122. That date makes it the next major event after Alien: Earth in the core chronology.

The connection is chronological and thematic rather than dependent on Ripley appearing in the series. Alien: Earth can examine Earth’s corporate hierarchy, synthetic bodies, and competing institutions while the original film later narrows the story to a small crew confronting an organism in space.
The two-year separation also helps explain why the series is best called a prequel. It is not a continuation of Ripley’s personal arc, and it is not set after the colonial conflict of Aliens. It is a story about the world that exists immediately before the Nostromo’s encounter.
Alien: Romulus: 2142
Alien: Romulus is set in 2142, approximately 20 years after the original Alien. That places it after the Nostromo story but well before the events of Aliens.
The official 20th Century Studios synopsis describes a group of young colonizers scavenging a derelict space station. The studio synopsis establishes the premise, while the 2142 date comes from the established franchise chronology rather than from that synopsis itself. This distinction matters: 2142 is the accepted in-universe placement, but the studio page should not be presented as independently printing the year.
The film’s position can be written as:
Alien: Earth (2120) → Alien (2122) → Alien: Romulus (2142) → Aliens (2179)

Aliens and Alien 3: 2179
Aliens is generally placed in 2179, nearly six decades after Alien. Ripley’s long period in hypersleep accounts for the large gap between the two stories without requiring her to age normally during the interval.
Alien 3 follows directly after Aliens and is also broadly dated to 2179. The exact number of days between the two stories is less important than their immediate sequence: Alien 3 belongs after the Hadley’s Hope events and not in a separate later historical era.

Alien: Resurrection: 2381
Alien: Resurrection is the farthest-forward feature-film entry in this principal sequence. It is generally placed in 2381, roughly two centuries after the events of Alien 3.
The precise year is less important to the question of Alien: Earth than the scale of the gap. By comparison, Alien: Earth is almost immediately adjacent to the original film: 2120 and 2122 are separated by only two years, while Resurrection takes place centuries later.

Is this one definitive Alien timeline?
It is the cleanest chronology for the primary live-action films and series, but “the Alien timeline” is not perfectly uniform across every licensed work. Novels, comics, video games, role-playing products, promotional shorts, and other expanded-universe material can use different continuity assumptions or dates inferred from context rather than directly stated by the rights holders.
The Alien vs. Predator films are also best kept separate from this streamlined sequence. Their crossover premise creates a different relationship between modern Earth history, Weyland Industries, and the extraterrestrial species. Alien: Earth is presented as part of the core Alien franchise rather than as a continuation of that crossover chronology.
There is also a narrower canon question involving the prequel films. Noah Hawley’s comments indicate that the series draws most strongly from the first two films’ tone and ideas and does not automatically treat every prequel interpretation as equally authoritative. That is a creative-continuity qualification, not proof that Prometheus and Alien: Covenant have simply been erased. Their chronological positions remain useful, while their explanations of the mythology should be discussed with appropriate caution.
The answer in one sentence
Alien: Earth takes place in 2120, two years before Alien in 2122; in the core chronology, it follows Prometheus and Alien: Covenant and comes before Alien, Alien: Romulus, Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien: Resurrection.
