What exactly premiered?
The release was the eighth and final episode of Stranger Things Season 5, the series’ fifth and final season. Its official title is “Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up.” Netflix released it as one feature-length television episode, not as a separately distributed movie. The title is confirmed in Netflix’s official Season 5 episode-title listing.
This is a post-release guide: the finale is not still awaiting its premiere. It is available to stream on Netflix, and this article keeps the story discussion spoiler-free.

U.S. release times on December 31, 2025
Netflix used a synchronized global launch. In the United States, the anchor time was 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time, which was 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time on December 31. Because the U.S. was observing standard time that day, the complete domestic schedule was:
| U.S. time zone | Release time | Local date |
|---|---|---|
| Hawaii | 3:00 p.m. HST | December 31, 2025 |
| Alaska | 4:00 p.m. AKST | December 31, 2025 |
| Pacific | 5:00 p.m. PT/PST | December 31, 2025 |
| Mountain | 6:00 p.m. MT/MST | December 31, 2025 |
| Central | 7:00 p.m. CT/CST | December 31, 2025 |
| Eastern | 8:00 p.m. ET/EST | December 31, 2025 |
These times come from Netflix’s official Season 5 release schedule. If Netflix did not display the episode immediately in an app, refreshing the title page or restarting the app was the practical first step; the scheduled release moment itself did not vary by U.S. time zone.
Why did some countries get it on January 1?
Viewers in the United States saw December 31 because the launch occurred during the afternoon and evening there. The same release moment fell on Thursday, January 1, 2026, in many other parts of the world.
| Region or audience | Local calendar date |
|---|---|
| United States, Canada and much of Latin America | December 31, 2025 |
| United Kingdom and much of Europe | January 1, 2026 |
| Much of Africa, Asia and Oceania | January 1, 2026 |
The January 1 listings do not indicate an earlier or later regional premiere. They reflect the same simultaneous worldwide Netflix launch crossing midnight in those time zones. Netflix’s regional schedule lists the finale on December 31 for the Americas and January 1 for Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania.
The runtime correction: 2 hours 5 minutes or 2 hours 8 minutes?
The final figure to use for the released episode is 2 hours 8 minutes, or 128 minutes. The confusion comes from two different announcements:
- On December 16, 2025, Netflix announced an initial runtime of 2 hours 5 minutes, or 125 minutes, in its Tudum runtime announcement.
- On December 22, co-creator Ross Duffer’s later final-runtimes listing gave Episode 8 a duration of 2 hours 8 minutes. Contemporary release coverage, including Tom’s Guide’s report, also documented the change.
So, if an older page says the finale runs 125 minutes, it is usually repeating Netflix’s earlier announcement rather than reporting the later final listing. The discrepancy should not be silently ignored: 125 minutes was the initial announced runtime; 128 minutes is the best-supported final released runtime.
Rank #2
There is no verified public explanation for the three-minute change. It could reflect a final edit or updated runtime data, but neither Netflix nor the creators publicly established the reason. The 128-minute number should also be understood as the listed episode runtime, not a promise that every minute is uninterrupted story footage. Opening material, credits and Netflix’s presentation may be included.
How long is it compared with other episodes?
At 128 minutes, the finale is easily the longest episode of Season 5. It is not, however, the longest episode in the entire series.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSeason 4’s finale, “Chapter Nine: The Piggyback,” is generally listed at approximately 142 minutes, or about 2 hours 22 minutes. The Season 5 finale is therefore shorter than the previous season’s finale, despite still being feature-length. It is accurate to call Episode 8 the longest episode of Season 5, but not the longest episode in Stranger Things history.
How much time should you set aside?
Treat the finale like a movie rather than a standard television episode. A viewer in Eastern Time who pressed play at 8:00 p.m. would reach the end of the listed 128-minute runtime at approximately 10:08 p.m. on December 31. A Pacific Time viewer starting at 5:00 p.m. would finish at approximately 7:08 p.m.
| U.S. zone | Start | Approximate end |
|---|---|---|
| Hawaii | 3:00 p.m. | 5:08 p.m. |
| Alaska | 4:00 p.m. | 6:08 p.m. |
| Pacific | 5:00 p.m. | 7:08 p.m. |
| Mountain | 6:00 p.m. | 8:08 p.m. |
| Central | 7:00 p.m. | 9:08 p.m. |
| Eastern | 8:00 p.m. | 10:08 p.m. |
Those are uninterrupted schedule calculations. Pausing, pre-show activity, trailers at a cinema or a late start will push the finish time later. The 128-minute listing should not be reduced by an assumed credit length unless Netflix or the creators provide a separate story-only duration.
The complete Season 5 release schedule
Netflix split the eight-episode final season into three release blocks rather than dropping every episode at once:
Rank #3
| Release block | Episodes | U.S. release |
|---|---|---|
| Volume 1 | Episodes 1–4 | November 26, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. PT |
| Volume 2 | Episodes 5–7 | December 25, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. PT |
| Finale | Episode 8 | December 31, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. PT |
The episode counts and dates are listed in Netflix’s Media Center schedule for the final season. The finale therefore arrived six days after Volume 2, rather than being included in the Christmas release.
Could you watch the finale in theaters?
Yes, but only as a limited fan-event engagement in selected cinemas in the United States and Canada. The screenings began simultaneously with the Netflix release on December 31 and continued through January 1, 2026. They were not a conventional worldwide theatrical release or a permanent alternative to Netflix.
Netflix initially announced screenings in more than 500 theaters. Later reporting described the event as expanding to more than 620 locations near release. The two figures refer to different points in the rollout: the first was Netflix’s initial announcement, while the larger number reflected the later expansion. Netflix’s theater announcement confirms the U.S. and Canadian fan-screening plan, and later reporting on the event documents the expanded count.
Those screenings have ended. For viewers watching now, Netflix is the available home for the finale and the rest of the series. Netflix’s final-season announcement confirms that all five seasons are streaming on the service.

Spoiler-free viewing guide
The only information needed to identify the release is that “Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up” is the concluding episode of the fifth and final season. No ending details are necessary to plan a viewing: reserve at least 128 minutes, use the time-zone table above, and remember that viewers in many countries saw the local date as January 1, 2026.
Readers looking for the release details without spoilers should also be aware that some pre-release coverage discussed major developments from Volumes 1 and 2. This guide does not reveal the finale’s outcome.

Why older articles may look inconsistent
Several release guides were written before December 31 and used future tense. They may say the finale will premiere, list the theater event as upcoming, or repeat the original 2-hour-5-minute runtime. Those statements made sense at the time of publication but are incomplete after the release.
In particular, the widely circulated 125-minute figure was still present in some pages updated after the later runtime listing. The precise way to describe the record is: Netflix first announced 2 hours 5 minutes on December 16; Ross Duffer later listed the final runtime as 2 hours 8 minutes on December 22. For a current article, the latter is the figure that should lead.

Is the Stranger Things Season 5 finale 2 hours 5 minutes or 2 hours 8 minutes?
Netflix initially announced 2 hours 5 minutes, or 125 minutes, on December 16, 2025. A later final-runtimes listing from co-creator Ross Duffer gave Episode 8 a runtime of 2 hours 8 minutes, or 128 minutes. The later 128-minute figure is the best-supported final runtime for the released episode.
Was the Stranger Things Season 5 finale released as a movie?
No. It was Episode 8, “Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up,” a feature-length television episode. Netflix also arranged limited synchronized fan screenings in select U.S. and Canadian theaters, but it was not a separate worldwide theatrical movie release.
Why did some viewers see January 1, 2026 instead of December 31, 2025?
Netflix released the finale worldwide at the same moment. The launch occurred at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time on December 31 in the United States, but that same moment was already January 1 in the United Kingdom, much of Europe, and many parts of Asia, Africa and Oceania.
Is the Season 5 finale the longest Stranger Things episode ever?
No. It is the longest episode of Season 5 at 128 minutes, but the Season 4 finale, “Chapter Nine: The Piggyback,” was longer at roughly 142 minutes, or about 2 hours 22 minutes.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Stranger Things Season 5’s finale premiered in the U.S. on December 31, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. PT / 8:00 p.m. ET. The final listed runtime is 2 hours 8 minutes—not the earlier 2 hours 5 minutes—and the episode is now streaming on Netflix.
