Cineplex’s Canadian Barbie and Oppenheimer re-release began Friday, July 19, 2024, as a limited-time engagement. The screenings revisited the pairing that became known as “Barbenheimer” when the films opened on the same weekend in July 2023. The event has ended; the 2024 report described screenings at various cinemas across Canada, but did not give an attendance figure.
What was the 2024 Barbenheimer re-release?
On July 16, 2024, Cineplex announced that Barbie and Oppenheimer would return to Canadian theatres starting Friday, July 19, for a limited time. Exclaim!’s contemporaneous report said screenings were offered at various cinemas around the country; it did not identify a nationwide screening count or report turnout for the re-release. Exclaim!’s July 16, 2024 report
The pairing recalls the films’ simultaneous opening in July 2023, when their contrasting styles and shared release date prompted audiences to watch both as a double feature. The nickname “Barbenheimer” came to describe that theatrical phenomenon.
What the original 2023 opening-weekend figures do—and don’t—show
Cineplex’s July 24, 2023 announcement reported more than 1.4 million guests across its theatres over the opening weekend and more than $19 million in box office revenue. It also said over 80,000 Cineplex guests saw both movies that weekend. These are figures for the original 2023 opening weekend, not the 2024 return. Cineplex’s July 24, 2023 release

The same release said 59 per cent of Cineplex’s Oppenheimer box office came from premium offerings: UltraAVX, IMAX, VIP Cinemas and 70mm film. That figure describes the 2023 engagement; it does not establish which formats, if any, were used for the 2024 screenings.
Then-Cineplex president and CEO Ellis Jacob characterized the result as evidence of enthusiasm for theatrical viewing, saying: “This record-setting weekend box office performance of Barbie and Oppenheimer confirms that Canadians and movie-lovers around the world maintain their passion for the big screen that cannot be replicated at home.” That is the company leader’s interpretation of the opening-weekend performance, rather than an independent measure of audience preferences.

How to revisit the films now
The 2024 theatrical engagement is over, and the available information does not establish current ticket availability or streaming access. Official home-video pages confirm physical formats for both films, though the exact experience depends on the edition and playback equipment.
- Barbie: Warner Bros.’ official film site lists DVD/Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD categories. Warner Bros.’ official Barbie site
- Oppenheimer: Universal Pictures Home Entertainment lists 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital, Blu-ray + DVD + Digital, DVD and digital options. Universal’s official Oppenheimer page
A 4K Ultra HD disc requires compatible playback hardware and a suitable display to use its 4K presentation. Home viewing offers access to the films, but it is not the same as a theatrical presentation—particularly a large-format screening such as 70mm IMAX.
