If a ring announcer names the wrong boxer, the correction does not automatically change the official result. What happens next depends on the competition’s governing rules: some procedures address correcting the announcement and records, while others set out who checks scorecards and when an official decision may be changed.
What happened in the Hughes–Johnson bout?
In May 2024, Sky Sports reported that ring announcer Dan Hennessey mistakenly announced Nina Hughes as the winner before correcting the announcement to Cherneka Johnson. Sky Sports’ report documents the mistaken announcement and correction. It does not establish the precise cause of the error or all administrative steps taken afterward to confirm or amend the official record.
The distinction matters: a name spoken over the public-address system is not, by itself, evidence that the scorecards or official decision were changed. The rules of the relevant commission or competition determine who verifies the result and what must be done after an error.
Can a ring announcer change the official result?
An announcer communicates the result; the cited rules do not give announcers independent authority to alter a decision. The procedures instead assign checks or follow-up actions to officials such as inspectors and supervisors. The exact authority and process vary by jurisdiction and competition level.

How do the cited rules handle a wrong announcement?
| Ruleset and competition context | What the rules specify | What they do not establish |
|---|---|---|
| England Boxing, 2023/24 rulebook; amateur competition | Section 12.11, “Wrong Decision Announcement,” directs the supervisor to inform coaches, adjust bout records, arrange any exchange of presentations, and note the mistake in the supervisor’s report. If the boxers have left, the supervisor should contact their coaches and regional registrars, arrange record adjustments and any presentation exchange, and report the mistake. England Boxing Rule Book 2023/2024. | This is a procedure for England Boxing; it is not a universal rule for all boxing events. |
| Virginia, 18VAC120-40-360 | After checking scorecards for accuracy, the event inspector informs the announcer of the decision. The department may change a rendered decision only under specified conditions, including an error in compiling scorecards that favored the wrong boxer. Virginia Administrative Code, 18VAC120-40-360. | The rule describes Virginia’s process, not a process applicable in other jurisdictions. |
| Ontario, professional boxing | Part I, “Announcers,” says the announcer must announce the result at the bout’s conclusion and may not make announcements the Commissioner considers likely to compromise the bout’s integrity. Ontario professional boxing rules. | The cited section does not lay out a general procedure for correcting a mistakenly announced winner. |
Announcement correction is not the same as changing a decision
Rules can address different stages of an error. A supervisor’s follow-up to correct bout records or presentations, as described by England Boxing, is not the same thing as authority to revise the result itself. Virginia’s rule makes that distinction especially clear: it requires an inspector to check scorecards before the announcer is told the decision, and it restricts when a rendered decision may be changed.
For a particular bout, the useful questions are which body governed the event, whether it was amateur or professional, who reviewed the scorecards, and whether the problem was a mistaken spoken announcement or an error in the recorded decision. Without those details, one jurisdiction’s remedy should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
