This Canadian streaming roundup covers releases arriving August 5–11, 2024: Netflix’s final season of The Umbrella Academy, the Ontario-focused documentary The Movie Man, and new films and series on Apple TV+, Crave and Prime Video. Dates and access details below refer to that week in 2024, not the current catalogues.

The week’s biggest franchise event is The Umbrella Academy’s six-episode conclusion. For Canadian documentary viewers, The Movie Man stands out: it follows the effort to keep a rural Ontario cinema operating. Note that it is not simply part of a standard Prime Video membership.
Apple TV+: The Instigators (August 9)
Doug Liman directs this 101-minute heist comedy starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck as thieves whose robbery goes wrong. Hong Chau plays their therapist, who gets pulled into their escape; Paul Walter Hauser is also in the cast. It is the week’s Apple TV+ feature premiere and a natural pick for viewers after a crime caper with comic turns. Access was through an Apple TV+ subscription.

Crave: Industry season 3 (August 11)
The third season begins on Crave in Canada at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 11, 2024. The eight-episode season follows Pierpoint & Co. as it makes a major move into ethical investing. Created by Mickey Down and Konrad Kay, the drama stars Marisa Abela, Harry Lawtey, Myha’la, Ken Leung and Kit Harington.
Unlike a full-season drop, Industry was scheduled to continue with one new episode each Sunday. That makes it the week’s appointment-viewing option: viewers following the season needed ongoing Crave access rather than a single evening to binge all eight episodes.

Netflix: a series finale and a dog documentary
The Umbrella Academy season 4 (August 8)
The six-episode fourth season is the final chapter of the series based on Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s comics. The Hargreeves siblings find themselves in a timeline where they no longer have their powers. Episodes run approximately an hour. Steve Blackman created the series; the returning cast includes Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman and Robert Sheehan.

There is a substantial Canadian connection: Halifax-born Elliot Page stars, and the series was filmed in Toronto and other Ontario locations. For viewers already invested in the Hargreeves family, this is the week’s clearest priority and the largest single Netflix release.

Inside the Mind of a Dog (August 9)
This 75-minute documentary explores scientific and emotional insights into dogs and their behaviour. It is the shorter, more self-contained Netflix choice of the week, suited to dog owners, families and viewers looking for nonfiction rather than a multi-season commitment.

Monkey Man (August 6)
Dev Patel wrote, directed and stars in this 121-minute action thriller. A young man infiltrates India’s elite while pursuing revenge rooted in childhood trauma. Pitobash, Sikandar Kher and Sharlto Copley also star. It is the week’s major recent theatrical-film pick for viewers who want a feature-length action movie. The Canadian roundup listed it on Prime Video; check the service’s listing for the precise access terms applicable to an account.

The Movie Man (August 7)
Toronto filmmaker Matt Finlin’s 88-minute documentary follows Keith Stata and his effort to preserve and operate Highlands Cinemas in Kinmount, Ontario, including the theatre’s challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its setting and subject make it the most distinctly Canadian story in this lineup.

Access matters: The Movie Man was offered through the Hollywood Suite channel on Prime Video Channels, as well as through television providers. A separate Hollywood Suite subscription was required; a Prime Video membership alone did not include it.
What to watch first
- For a series finale: Start The Umbrella Academy season 4, the final six episodes.
- For action: Pick Monkey Man.
