In a 2016 report, Thai journalist Prangthong Jitcharoenkul—known as PJ—described a Thai-language book project built from interviews with 10 Thais who had lived in India. Its aim was to challenge anti-Indian stereotypes in Thailand without pretending that her own experience in India had been free of difficulty. The report called the book forthcoming, but it did not give a title or release date, and its later publication has not been verified.
What was the book about?
Preeti Jha’s June 5, 2016 report for Scroll.in profiled Prangthong Jitcharoenkul, a Thai journalist who returned to Bangkok after a three-year course in India. She was preparing a book in Thai based on interviews with 10 fellow Thais who had experienced life in India.
The project sought to complicate the way some Thais viewed India and Indians by sharing accounts from people with firsthand experience there. Prangthong described a broader habit of looking down on people from other countries: “We have a habit of looking down on other nationals.”
What prejudice did the report describe?
After Prangthong returned to Bangkok, she said people asked her disparaging questions about India, including whether the country had public toilets and whether Indians were “very smelly.” These were examples of prejudice reported by Jha, not factual descriptions of India or its people.

The report also recounted Prangthong’s own account of being harassed outside her university in India. She said her book was not intended to whitewash that experience. Her account illustrates the distinction at the heart of the project: challenging prejudice against Indians did not require denying that she had faced difficulties herself. These personal experiences, as reported in 2016, should not be treated as measurements of how prevalent discrimination is in either country.
Why did she point to ties between Thailand and India?
Prangthong placed the project against a backdrop of historical and cultural connections. Jha’s report mentions Hindu shrines dedicated to Brahma, Indra and Ganesh in Bangkok, Sanskrit roots shared by some names, and similarities the article draws between Thai and Indian festivals. These are examples of connections, not evidence that the two societies are interchangeable.

“We have an ancient cultural link,” Prangthong said. “But the people are still far from each other.” The contrast captures the project’s premise: longstanding cultural connections do not automatically overcome social distance or stereotypes.
Was the book ever published?
The 2016 article described the Thai-language book as soon to be published, but it did not provide a title, publisher, ISBN or release date. A LinkedIn professional profile for PJ does not establish the book’s publication or availability. On the information that can be verified here, whether it appeared later—and under what title—remains unknown.

What did the 2016 report say about Indians in Thailand?
Jha attributed an estimate of around 200,000 people of Indian origin in Thailand to the Embassy of India in Bangkok. That is a figure reported in 2016, not a current verified population estimate.
