What does the asterisk in Thunderbolts* mean?
It signals the reveal that the Thunderbolts are rebranded as The New Avengers. The film first follows the group under the Thunderbolts name, then makes the new identity explicit in its closing title treatment. TheWrap describes an end-credit montage of newspaper clippings in which the word “Thunderbolts” is torn away to reveal “The New Avengers”; TIME’s ending explanation also describes Valentina’s rebrand after the team helps stop Bob, or the Void.
How the film reveals the new name
Valentina gives the team a public identity
After the consequences of her Sentry experiment and the team’s rescue of New York, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine presents the former Thunderbolts as the New Avengers. The name is part of her effort to frame the group publicly, rather than a separate team arriving to replace them.
The closing title treatment confirms it
The end-credit newspaper montage transforms the film’s title into “The New Avengers,” tying the asterisk to the team’s new name. Marvel made that identity public beyond the film on May 5, 2025. Good Morning America reported Marvel’s announcement, which included the social post: “Presenting Marvel Studios’ #̶T̶h̶u̶n̶d̶e̶r̶b̶o̶l̶t̶s̶* #TheNewAvengers.”

What the later credits scene adds
The later credits scene is set fourteen months afterward. The team discusses a legal dispute over the Avengers name, and Red Guardian suggests “New Avengerz.” That exchange is a joke about the group’s legitimacy and naming rights; it does not change the earlier reveal that Valentina is presenting them as the New Avengers.
The scene also alerts the team to an “extra-dimensional ship.” TIME reports that the satellite image shows the Fantastic Four logo, setting up a connection to the Fantastic Four rather than explaining the title’s asterisk.

Does the Fantastic Four tease contradict the rename?
No. The title reveal establishes the Thunderbolts’ new public identity within this film. The later scene points toward another story and makes fun of the team’s claim to the Avengers name; the two beats serve different purposes.
For continuity context, Matt Shakman, director of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, said the Thunderbolts* post-credit scene was created relatively late and was not something he knew about while writing his script. GamesRadar reported his comment from a CinemaBlend interview: “No, no, no, because the Thunderbolts end credit scene was also created, you know, relatively late in my process too, so that was not something that I was familiar with because it hadn’t been created at the time that I was working on my script, you know?”
