Why Taylor Swift’s Vienna concerts were cancelled
Swift was scheduled to perform at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium on 8, 9 and 10 August 2024. The shows were sold out. On 7 August, Austrian police arrested a 19-year-old Austrian citizen in Ternitz, Lower Austria, and a second suspect, aged 17, in Vienna, according to a question filed in the Austrian Parliament.

After the arrests and a government confirmation of the threat, concert organiser Barracuda Music cancelled all three performances, citing public safety. Its message, quoted by ABC News on 7 August, said: “We have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety.”
What authorities said about the alleged plan
Initial accounts left key details uncertain
ABC News reported on 7 August that investigators had found explosive precursor chemicals. At that point, they did not know whether a functioning bomb had been produced and were not convinced that the alleged plan would have worked. That uncertainty is important: the early public account did not establish that an operational device existed.

Prosecutors later described specific allegations
In a later charging announcement, Vienna prosecutors said a defendant had planned and prepared an attack on the 9 August concert. The Associated Press reported that prosecutors accused him of sharing Islamic State propaganda, obtaining online instructions for a TATP-based shrapnel bomb, producing a small amount of explosive and attempting to buy weapons illegally. These are prosecutorial allegations, not established findings of guilt.
What is known about intelligence sharing
ABC News reported that U.S. intelligence information was passed to Austrian authorities and Europol. In the later Associated Press report, then-White House national security spokesman John Kirby said the United States had shared information with Austrian partners “to enable the disruption of a threat to Taylor Swift’s concerts there in Vienna.” His statement described cooperation between governments; it did not provide a public account of the intelligence or independently establish the alleged plan’s details.

How to read the crowd and threat estimates
Contemporary reports offered estimates, not attendance counts. ABC News reported that police expected 65,000 concertgoers inside per show and 10,000–15,000 people outside. Euronews, citing the Associated Press, reported an estimate of 65,000 inside and upwards of 30,000 outside. The different outside-crowd figures should not be combined into a single precise total.
On 29 August 2024, Euronews with the Associated Press reported CIA Deputy Director David Cohen’s characterization that the suspects were plotting to kill “a huge number, tens of thousands of people at this concert” and were “quite advanced in this.” That was Cohen’s public estimate, not an independently verified count of intended victims. It is also a later official characterization than the early investigators’ reported uncertainty about whether a functioning bomb had been produced.

What Swift said after the cancellations
After her London shows, Swift addressed the Vienna cancellations in a public statement reported by TIME on 22 August 2024. She wrote, “Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating,” and thanked authorities, adding, “thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives.”
What the public record establishes—and what it does not
The concerts were cancelled following arrests and official confirmation of a threat; prosecutors later announced charges alleging preparation of an attack on the 9 August show. The early account and the later charging announcement describe different stages of the public record, not a court’s resolution of the allegations. The reports covered here do not establish a conviction or the final disposition of the criminal case.
