According to contemporaneous reports, people associated with the Club Penguin hacking community allegedly accessed a Disney Confluence environment and downloaded approximately 2.5 GB of internal files in June 2024. The reported archive included old Club Penguin material, corporate and advertising documents, technical information, and references to internal tools and infrastructure.
The important qualification is that Disney had not publicly confirmed the incident in the contemporaneous coverage reviewed. There is also no evidence in those sources that Disney+ accounts, payment-card data, or a current consumer database were exposed. This was reported as an alleged exposure of internal documentation—not a confirmed mass customer-data breach.
The reported incident in brief
The story began with people reportedly searching for information connected to the discontinued online game Club Penguin. According to security and technology coverage, the group allegedly used previously exposed credentials to enter a Disney Confluence environment. Confluence is a collaboration and knowledge-management platform used to store internal documents, project information, technical notes, and links.
The alleged intruders reportedly found considerably more than Club Penguin archives. Approximately 2.5 GB of files was said to have been downloaded and later circulated in online communities, including Discord and 4chan. That figure comes from contemporary reporting and should be treated as an approximate amount of material reportedly exfiltrated, not as a verified measurement of Disney’s entire affected system.

Check Point’s June 2024 threat-intelligence bulletin described the incident as alleged and noted that Disney had not confirmed it. Gizmodo also reported on the story on June 6, 2024.
Reported timeline
- March 30, 2017: The original Club Penguin service shut down.
- June 4–5, 2024: Discussions about allegedly leaked Disney files began circulating in Club Penguin-related communities.
- June 6, 2024: Gizmodo published coverage of the alleged Disney data leak.
- June 3–9, 2024: Check Point included the incident in a threat-intelligence bulletin and characterized it as alleged.
The timeline describes when the story and community discussions became visible. It does not establish precisely when access began, how long it lasted, or whether every circulated file came directly from Disney’s systems.
What was reportedly in the files?
Reports and community discussions described several broad categories of material:

- developer tools reportedly called Helios and CommuniCore;
- internal API endpoints and references to credentials or services such as Amazon S3.
These descriptions should not be read as proof that every item was current, confidential, or usable. Some community members said portions of the material were several years old, while other reports referred to documents dated as recently as June 1, 2024. Those details were attributed to discussions about the files rather than independently verified through a Disney disclosure.

Why access to Confluence can matter
A documentation platform is not automatically the same thing as a company’s production environment. The available reporting does not establish that the alleged attackers disrupted Disney operations, entered Disney+ customer accounts, or took control of production services.
However, internal documentation can still be valuable to an attacker. It may reveal:
- how systems are organized;
- internal project names and business plans;
- employee workflows and technical contacts;
- private service endpoints;
- developer tools and deployment processes;
- credentials, tokens, or links to systems that may still be active.
A document that mentions a credential or endpoint is not necessarily an exploitable secret. It may be obsolete, revoked, incomplete, or disconnected from the system it describes. Nevertheless, access to such material can create follow-on risk, which is why the sensitivity of the files matters more than the headline number of gigabytes.

How did the alleged access happen?
Secondary reporting said that previously exposed credentials were used. That is a reported access method, not a complete forensic conclusion. The available sources do not establish where the credentials came from, whether they were reused, whether multi-factor authentication was enabled, whether the credentials were still valid, or what level of access they provided.

It is therefore more accurate to say that the incident was reportedly enabled by previously exposed credentials than to claim that Disney’s security controls were definitively bypassed in a particular way.
Was Club Penguin player data stolen?
No reviewed source establishes that active Club Penguin player accounts, Disney customer passwords, payment information, or other consumer records were included. The reported archive was described primarily as internal documents, corporate material, and Club Penguin development or archival files.
The original Club Penguin game had already shut down in 2017. Community discussions interpreting allegedly leaked documents claimed that account data from the original game had been deleted after the shutdown, but that interpretation is not an independently verified Disney privacy statement. Former players should not assume that the claim proves either deletion or exposure.
There is also an important distinction between the original Disney-owned game and unofficial private servers. Club Penguin Rewritten was an unofficial recreation with its own separate breach history. Incidents involving that service should not be merged with the alleged Disney Confluence incident. What former players should do
The available evidence does not justify assuming that everyone who played the official game had their Disney account or payment information exposed. Sensible precautions are still appropriate:
- Change any old password that was reused on another account.
- Enable multi-factor authentication where it is available.
- Be cautious of phishing messages that use Club Penguin, Disney, or “leaked data” as a lure.
- Do not download or open copies of the leaked archive.
- Use Disney’s official account-security and support channels for account-specific concerns.
These are general security measures, not evidence that player accounts were compromised in this incident.

The “Club Penguin hackers” framing makes the story memorable, but it can obscure the central security issue: alleged access to an internal corporate knowledge system through previously exposed credentials. It can also suggest a confirmed Disney-wide breach when the contemporaneous public record did not establish that.
Likewise, 2.5 GB sounds substantial, but volume alone does not measure impact. A small collection containing valid credentials or privileged architecture information could be more dangerous than a much larger archive of obsolete, low-sensitivity files. Conversely, an internal document archive may contain confidential business information without providing access to production systems or customer accounts.

What happened to the files?
Reports indicated that the material was shared and discussed in online communities and was mirrored or circulated among Club Penguin fans. This article does not link to copies of the archive or reproduce credentials, API keys, internal URLs, or private employee information. Redistributing confidential corporate files can create legal and security risks, particularly if the files contain personal information or still-valid secrets.
Bottom line
The most defensible description is an alleged unauthorized access and exfiltration of Disney internal documentation connected to a Club Penguin-focused intrusion. Contemporary reports supported the approximate 2.5 GB figure and described a mixture of Club Penguin and broader Disney material, but Disney had not publicly confirmed the incident in the coverage reviewed.
Nothing in the available evidence establishes a mass exposure of Disney customer passwords, payment data, Disney+ accounts, or active Club Penguin player records. The incident is potentially serious because internal documentation can expose sensitive business and technical information, but its exact scope, impact, and attribution remain unverified.
