Patrick Bateman’s watch in the 2000 film American Psycho is identified by two watch-focused sources as a two-tone Seiko 5 SNXJ90—not a Rolex. Its Datejust-like design explains why the prop is often mistaken for a Rolex, but the Rolex Datejust 16013 is not the best-supported identification of the watch seen on screen.
Which watch does Patrick Bateman wear in the film?
The strongest specific identification is the Seiko 5 SNXJ90. WatchSpotting describes it as a two-tone watch with a fluted gold-tone bezel, white day-date dial and Jubilee-style bracelet. WatchReel independently names the same reference and says it resembles a Rolex Datejust at ordinary viewing distance. WatchSpotting’s identification and WatchReel’s identification are specialist secondary reporting, rather than production records.
WatchReel reports that the SNXJ90 has been discontinued. That does not establish whether a particular example is currently available for sale.
Why is it often called a Rolex Datejust?
The Seiko’s two-tone finish, fluted bezel, day-date display and bracelet evoke the Datejust’s familiar look. At a glance, the prop can read as the kind of luxury watch Bateman’s status-conscious world prizes. That visual resemblance helps explain the persistent Rolex attribution; it does not make the Seiko a Rolex.

Some coverage names the watch as a Rolex Datejust 16013. Esquire Middle East and British GQ repeat that identification, but it conflicts with the more specific Seiko SNXJ90 identifications from two watch-focused sources. The 16013 is best treated as a common misidentification, not as the established screen watch. Esquire Middle East’s article and British GQ’s article illustrate how widely the Datejust claim has circulated.
What is different in the novel?
The book and film do not use the same watch wording. Secondary accounts report that the novel names a Rolex reference, while the film’s memorable line is “Don’t touch the watch.” The film line retains Bateman’s possessiveness without naming a brand. Time+Tide discusses the distinction and the film’s wording in its account of Bateman’s watch.

A separate production anecdote says Rolex would not allow Bateman to wear one of its watches, prompting a change in the line. IMDb trivia repeats that story, but it is not a primary production record, and no verified statement from Rolex or the filmmakers establishes it as fact. IMDb’s trivia page should therefore be read as a report of the anecdote, not confirmation from the people involved.
What the watch says about Bateman
American Psycho presents Bateman in a social world where luxury labels and visible possessions help signal taste and rank. The watch participates in that performance: its look suggests the status associated with a Rolex Datejust, even though the prop is identified as a Seiko. The gap between appearance and close identification fits the film’s broader interest in surfaces, labels and the uncertainty beneath them. That is a reading of the effect the watch has on screen, not a documented statement of the costume department’s intent.

How to identify the watch if you are looking for one
Use the reference number, not just the film association. WatchSpotting and WatchReel identify the screen prop as the Seiko 5 SNXJ90, and WatchReel reports the model is discontinued. If you encounter one offered for sale, verify the reference and assess the individual watch’s authenticity, condition and service history; the film identification alone says nothing about a particular listing.
A Rolex Datejust 16013 may be relevant as a visual comparison or in discussion of the novel’s brand association, but it should be described as a separate watch—not the best-supported identification of Bateman’s on-screen prop.
