An anonymous social-media user claimed to have seen a test screening of the canceled Batgirl film and described a story involving Barbara Gordon, Firefly, fires and a possible connection to her mother’s death. Those details were never verified: BGR, which reported the account on August 8, 2022, said it had no way to confirm the claims. They should be understood as an alleged plot leak, not the confirmed story of the film.
What the alleged Batgirl plot leak said
According to BGR’s account of the post, the anonymous user said they had seen the film at a test screening about a month earlier. The story they described centered on Barbara Gordon as Batgirl confronting Firefly, who was reportedly setting fires during what appeared to be a conflict involving the mob.
The post also suggested Firefly might have killed Barbara’s mother when Barbara was young, and claimed Firefly dies by the end. These are details attributed to the anonymous poster; no independently verified plot synopsis establishes them as film content. The poster reportedly rated the movie 4/10, a personal opinion rather than an official score or audience result. BGR’s August 8, 2022 report also said the account was later deleted.
How reliable was the account?
The account’s central weakness is that the poster’s identity and claimed access could not be checked. BGR explicitly said it could not verify the claims. The reported existence of a test screening does not authenticate this particular poster or prove that the plot details are accurate.

The same BGR article separately relayed industry reporter Matt Belloni’s account of a source describing the story as small-stakes and convoluted, with multiple boyfriends and mob bosses. That is also secondhand characterization, not an independently confirmed synopsis. The anonymous poster reportedly described the film as small-scale and connected to the Keaton Batman continuity, but that claim likewise remains unverified.
Why the test-screening account does not describe a finished film
The film was canceled after principal filming had concluded and while post-production was still underway, according to The Guardian’s August 25, 2022 report and The Washington Post’s August 4, 2022 report. The Guardian reported that the film had a temporary score and unfinished visual effects, and that it had been shown publicly once in a test screening.

Director Adil El Arbi told The Guardian, “It cannot be released in its current state,” explaining that visual effects were missing and some scenes still needed to be shot. A screening, therefore, is not evidence that a completed, release-ready cut existed. The Washington Post placed the cancellation in the context of Warner Bros. Discovery’s changed approach to DC films after the merger; Warner Bros.’ statement reproduced by BGR said the decision reflected a strategic shift concerning the DC universe and HBO Max.

In a 2026 report, GamesRadar+ reported that J.K. Simmons recalled one test audience seeing the film and said that, in his recollection, it was not a bad score. This later cast-member recollection does not identify or verify the anonymous online poster, establish an official screening score, or confirm the leaked plot.
