Its premise—one exceptionally miserable person must save the world from happiness—is strange, sharp and immediately intriguing. The critical response gives it a credible case as one of Apple TV’s standout recent sci-fi series, but calling it the service’s “best” is a matter of taste, not an established ranking.
What is Pluribus about?
Apple’s official logline puts the show’s central paradox plainly: “The most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness.” The series follows novelist Carol Sturka, played by Seehorn, as she confronts a changed world. That setup makes happiness—not its absence—the apparent danger, while leaving the show’s larger mystery intact.
Apple classifies Pluribus as science fiction and describes it as a nine-episode drama. Gilligan created the series and writes and directs; Sony Pictures Television produced it. The premise is enough to establish the show’s unusual tone without giving away how its mystery develops.
Is Pluribus connected to Breaking Bad?
Apple’s series information does not identify Pluribus as a continuation of Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul. Gilligan’s authorship may make those earlier dramas a natural point of comparison, but the official premise and genre here are different: this is science fiction centered on Carol and a world transformed by happiness.

Some critics have compared its viewing experience with other series, including Severance, The Leftovers and The Good Place. Those are individual reviewers’ analogies, not evidence that the shows share a story or are interchangeable. The more useful comparison is about taste: how much momentum, mystery, comedy, character focus and ambiguity you want from a show.
What makes it stand out—and what might not work for everyone?
A distinctive premise and a lead performance
Rotten Tomatoes’ review roundup, updated December 15, 2025, highlights praise for the series’ originality, visual storytelling, Gilligan’s craft and Seehorn’s performance. The happiness-as-threat idea gives the drama an unusual starting point, while Seehorn anchors it in a central character rather than in science-fiction concepts alone.

A deliberately different kind of momentum
The same roundup records reservations about pacing and about whether the show will satisfy viewers expecting the narrative propulsion of Gilligan’s earlier work. That distinction matters: a familiar level of care in the writing does not mean a familiar tempo. If you want constant plot escalation, the pace may be a sticking point; if you enjoy a slower mystery and character-led storytelling, it may be part of the appeal.
Is Pluribus Apple’s best new sci-fi show in years?
That claim is defensible as a personal verdict, especially if you value originality, a commanding lead performance and visual storytelling. It is not an official result or a settled comparison across every Apple science-fiction series. The available figures also show why “critics love it” should not be treated as “every viewer will love it.”

These are mutable aggregator scores, not fixed measurements of quality. The gap between the critic and audience figures is a useful reminder that reception varies. My verdict: Pluribus has a strong case as a standout Apple TV sci-fi drama, but whether it is the best depends on your criteria and what you want from a series.
How many episodes are in season one, and when did they arrive?
Season one has nine episodes. Apple announced a two-episode premiere followed by weekly Friday releases, with the season’s rollout running through December 26, 2025.

Apple’s October 22, 2025 announcement also said the series had been picked up in a two-season order. That announcement did not provide a season-two premiere date.

Rhea Seehorn stars as Carol Sturka. Apple also names Karolina Wydra and Carlos-Manuel Vesga in the cast, with Miriam Shor and Samba Schutte guest starring. Gilligan is the creator, writer and director; he is also an executive producer alongside Gordon Smith, Alison Tatlock, Diane Mercer, Allyce Ozarski and Jeff Frost.

Where can you watch Pluribus?
Pluribus is available on Apple TV. The U.S. series page displayed a seven-day free trial followed by a $12.99 monthly subscription when accessed October 8, 2026. Price, trial eligibility, rating presentation and availability can vary by region or change; check the current terms on Apple’s page. Apple’s U.S. listing also shows a 56-minute runtime in its series metadata, but individual episode durations vary.
