In early January 2019, short videos featuring four generations of a Chinese family became a widely shared internet format. A child would call one family member into view, that person would bring in the next generation, and the sequence would end with a great-grandparent joining the frame—often followed by a dance or group pose. Scroll.in documented the format on January 6, 2019, describing it as a TikTok meme.
How the videos worked
The appeal depended on a simple, repeatable reveal. Although individual clips varied, the usual structure was:
- A child appears at the start of the video.
- The child calls or gestures for a parent, who enters the shot.
- The parent brings in their parent—the child’s grandparent.
- The sequence continues until a fourth generation, typically a great-grandparent, is visible.
- The assembled family celebrates, sometimes by dancing, posing or simply standing together.
Each entrance creates a small surprise, while the final frame makes the family relationship immediately legible: child, parent, grandparent and great-grandparent in one scene.

The surviving coverage places the trend in the first week of 2019. The social-media posts quoted or embedded by Scroll are dated January 4, 2019; Scroll’s video article followed on January 6, 2019, at 5:00 p.m. That chronology matters: this is an archived 2019 internet moment, not evidence of a challenge that remains popular in 2026.

Where were the clips posted?
Scroll identified TikTok as the app being used by the families. The videos then travelled through reposts, compilation-style posts and reactions on Twitter (now commonly called X). That does not establish that every clip originated on TikTok, or that TikTok officially created or named the challenge.
What role did Kassy Cho play?
The article highlighted a video posted by journalist and internet commentator Kassy Cho, along with later examples from other users. Her post helped expose the format to a wider English-language audience, but the available reporting does not prove that she invented the meme or uploaded the first example. It is more accurate to describe her as an amplifier of an already circulating format.

Why did people find it appealing?
The videos offered a low-risk alternative to the dangerous stunts associated with some online challenges. Their emotional effect came from several elements working together:

- Family continuity: four visible generations turn an ordinary gathering into a striking image.

Contemporary coverage framed the trend as wholesome partly because it made togetherness the point of participation rather than risk-taking. That is an interpretation of the format and the article’s framing, not a measured survey of audience opinion.

What the meme does—and does not—say about Chinese families
The phrase “four generations under one roof” supplied a convenient label for the videos, but it should not be read as proof that all the families lived together or that four-generation households are typical across China. The clips show families presenting multigenerational closeness in a highly shareable form; they do not, by themselves, establish a national custom or a uniquely Chinese tradition.

The available article is a short video feature and aggregation, not a definitive history of the trend. It does not identify the original creator, give the challenge’s Chinese-language name, list every participating family, provide reliable view totals or establish how long the format lasted. It also does not verify that the scenes were spontaneous; the repeated choreography strongly suggests coordination, but the source does not say how each family arranged its recording.

TikTok was one important venue, while reposts and compilations carried the idea to wider audiences. The meme’s lasting image is not a dangerous stunt but a carefully staged reveal that turns family continuity into a visual punchline.
